Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Running a model on your own computer protects only the request handled by that local model endpoint. The moment you add a cloud model, MCP server, file parser, embedding service, search connector, hosted interface, or synchronized app, those services may receive parts of your prompt or files independently. Privacy therefore depends on mapping every destination, limiting permissions, controlling storage and backups, and reviewing changes—not on the word “local” alone.
What “local” protects—and what it does not
Open WebUI’s documentation states that “the selected endpoint determines where inference happens.” Its interface forwards a message and the context attached to it to the provider endpoint configured for that model. Selecting a local model keeps that particular inference request inside the machine or network hosting the endpoint. Selecting a hosted model sends the prompt and included context to that provider. If you compare several models, the same prompt can be sent to each selected endpoint.

This boundary does not automatically include connected services. A local model can still rely on a remote MCP server, cloud file extraction, a hosted embedding API, web search, or a third-party application. Those services may receive the original file, extracted text, metadata, search terms, tool arguments, or the model’s output. Treat every separately configured service as its own recipient and trust decision.

Local inference controls where that model computes; it does not control every place your application, tools, files, logs, or backups may send or store data.

Map the complete data flow before connecting anything
Make an inventory before uploading a sensitive document or enabling an agent. Include the user interface, model endpoint, tool and MCP servers, file-parsing and extraction services, embedding service, search provider, application database, logs, exports, and backups. For each component, record the content it receives, its operator, processing and storage locations, retention terms, and the procedure for revoking access.
| Component | What it may receive | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Interface or hosted application | Prompts, conversation context, uploads, account and workspace metadata | Who operates the application and administrators? Where is its database hosted? |
| Model endpoint | Prompt text, attached context, tool results, and sometimes conversation history | Is the endpoint local, private infrastructure, or a hosted provider? What are its retention terms? |
| MCP or other tool server | Tool arguments, retrieved records, file contents, and requested actions | Who runs the server? What data does each tool definition request? Can it write or modify data? |
| File extraction service | Original uploads or their text, images, and metadata | Does extraction occur locally or through a cloud API? How are temporary copies deleted? |
| Embedding service | Text chunks derived from documents | Are chunks sent outside your infrastructure and retained there? |
| Storage, logs, exports, and backups | Uploaded originals, extracted text, embeddings, chats, tool traces, and administrative records | Who can read them, how are they encrypted, and how are copies deleted? |
Draw arrows between these components. An architecture can have a local model and an externally hosted embedding endpoint; the diagram makes that exception visible. Revisit the map whenever you change an endpoint, add a connector, or update a tool.
Ask what leaves the machine at each stage
Do not stop at “the prompt.” A PDF may be uploaded first, converted to text by another service, split into chunks, embedded remotely, and then retrieved into a later prompt. A tool call can send a customer identifier and return an entire record. Search can expose the wording of a question even if the answer is generated locally. Record these intermediate payloads, not just the final response.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteChoose an endpoint that matches the data sensitivity
Use a local or privately operated endpoint for material that must remain inside infrastructure you control. Keep hosted-model access out of sensitive workspaces, or restrict it to groups whose data policy permits that destination. Review the provider’s current terms and technical controls for each endpoint; no general “local AI” claim settles the behavior of an independently connected service.
| Setup | Inference location | Privacy decisions still required |

| Hosted model or application | The provider’s infrastructure | Review provider retention, residency, access, training, workspace, connector, and deletion terms. |
Ollama’s local-only control
Ollama’s privacy policy says: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” That statement applies to content processed locally with Ollama. It does not cover a separate application, extension, MCP server, parser, embedding provider, or cloud model.
Ollama documents a product-specific way to disable its cloud features. Set disable_ollama_cloud in the server configuration or set the environment variable OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1, then restart Ollama. Its documentation says this removes access to Ollama cloud models and web search. This is an Ollama control, not a network-wide guarantee: another application can still contact its own remote services.
Compare endpoints by more than location
Inference location is only one decision axis. Also compare who operates the service, where data is stored, how long it persists, which administrators can access it, whether prompts are used for training, and how deletion requests work. A private endpoint with weak host controls may expose more people than a carefully governed hosted workspace. Conversely, a hosted service may fail a policy that requires data to stay in a particular region. Document the reason for each choice rather than treating “local” or “cloud” as a complete risk rating.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Limit files and tools before they see sensitive content
Start with least privilege
- Leave upload and knowledge-base permissions off for groups that do not need them.
- Expose only the tools required for a defined task rather than every available server function.
- Separate read permissions from write, delete, send, purchase, or modify permissions.
- Restrict server-side functions and connector administration to trusted administrators or approved users.
- Use separate workspaces or deployments when teams have different confidentiality requirements.
For MCP servers, prefer the provider’s official server when one exists, inspect the data requested by each tool definition, and verify the server’s retention and residency terms. A connector is a third party with its own policies; the model provider’s privacy statement does not automatically govern it.

What to check in an MCP tool definition
Read the description and schema for every enabled function. Identify the fields it accepts, whether it can access a whole account or only a named record, and whether it can create, update, delete, transmit, or merely read. Check the authentication identity and scopes. A tool that appears to “find an invoice” may accept broad search parameters and return more fields than the model needs. Narrow the account, folder, project, or repository whenever the server supports that control.
Require approval for consequential actions
Require an explicit human review before a tool writes to a production system, changes a record, sends a message, publishes content, deletes a file, or performs another irreversible action. Show the user the tool name, arguments, target, and expected effect before approval. Keep sensitive tools disabled in read-only investigations.
Treat documents as possible prompt-injection carriers
A retrieved document can contain instructions designed to alter the model’s behavior. This remains a risk when inference is local if the model can access confidential data or call tools. Review tool inputs and outputs, constrain the actions available to the model, and do not let document text silently grant new permissions.
Recommended Free Tools
Use staged access for new connectors
Test a new server with synthetic or low-sensitivity records first. Confirm exactly what appears in requests, responses, logs, and the connected service. Start with read-only scopes and a small group of users. Expand access only after the owner documents the data destination, retention period, approval path, and emergency revocation method.
Understand where files persist
An upload rarely exists only inside the current prompt. The application may retain the original file, extracted text, chunks used for retrieval, vector embeddings, chat history, tool traces, logs, exports, and backup copies. Open WebUI provides file management and deletion, but deletion in one interface should not be assumed to erase independent exports, snapshots, downstream connector copies, or unencrypted backups.
Open WebUI storage guidance
For production deployments, Open WebUI’s published guidance recommends PostgreSQL with encrypted storage, TLS, encrypted backups, and network isolation. For SQLite-only deployments, it recommends an encrypted filesystem. These controls protect stored data from ordinary disk or network exposure; they do not make the running application, live database administrators, host operators, logs, exports, or unencrypted backups unable to read it.
Use metadata-only audit logs by default unless your organization has approved storing full conversation content in its logging system. If full text is required for an investigation, define who may access it, how long it is retained, and how it is removed.

Delete the whole file lifecycle
Open WebUI’s FAQ says users can review and delete uploaded files from File Manager, and that deleting a file also cleans associated Knowledge Base entries and vector embeddings. After deletion, separately verify retention in database backups, exported archives, application logs, model-provider systems, and connector services. Each system may have a different deletion schedule or recovery process.
Backups need their own access plan
List every backup target, including snapshots made by a hosting platform or database service. Encrypt backups before they leave the protected network when possible, restrict restore privileges, and record how long each copy is retained. A deletion request may require waiting for an expiry cycle or creating a documented exception for immutable backups. Make sure operators know whether restoring an old snapshot could bring a supposedly deleted file back into the application.
Self-hosting changes the operator, not the existence of a trust boundary
“Self-hosted” means you operate or select the infrastructure; it does not mean nobody else can access the data. Application administrators, database administrators, host operators, backup holders, and anyone possessing live application secrets may be able to read conversations or files. A separate deployment, database, credential set, backup system, operator group, and model provider can create a stronger boundary between teams with different trust requirements.
Document those roles explicitly. Decide who can patch the application, view database contents, restore backups, rotate encryption keys, approve connectors, and respond to deletion requests. Network isolation limits accidental exposure, while encryption limits access to people who do not possess the keys; neither removes access for an authorized running service or key holder.
Recheck connectors whenever they change
Connector behavior and tool availability can change after an administrator updates a server or publishes a new tool definition. OpenAI’s MCP guidance says administrators can refresh tool lists; ChatGPT uses a frozen snapshot of approved tools until an administrator reviews and publishes an update. Before sending sensitive content, review the currently approved model and tools, especially after an endpoint change, connector installation, or tool update.
Keep an approval record showing the server identity, tool list, permissions, data destinations, and review date. Revoke unused connectors rather than leaving them available indefinitely.
After a change, perform a short regression check: send a harmless test prompt, inspect the model endpoint selected, review the tool calls generated, and confirm that disabled tools are unavailable. Repeat the check after changing groups, credentials, server URLs, or extraction and embedding settings.
What workspace privacy statements do—and do not—cover
OpenAI states that Business, Enterprise, and Edu workspace content, including information accessed through apps, is not used to train its models by default. That statement applies to the specified workspace product. It does not determine how a non-synced third-party app stores or processes information sent to it. OpenAI’s MCP documentation separately places data sent to MCP servers under those servers’ retention and residency policies.

Read the terms for the exact edition, workspace, connector, and region you use. A workspace-level promise cannot override a connector’s own storage or processing behavior.
A practical privacy checklist
- Classify the data. Mark each workspace or project as public, internal, confidential, regulated, or otherwise restricted.
- Draw the flow. List the interface, model, MCP servers, parsers, embedding endpoints, search services, database, logs, exports, and backups.
- Choose allowed endpoints. Keep restricted data on local or approved private endpoints and block unapproved cloud models by group or workspace.
- Disable unnecessary cloud features. For Ollama, use
disable_ollama_cloudorOLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1and restart the service when its cloud models and web search are not wanted. - Set least-privilege permissions. Turn off unneeded uploads, knowledge access, tools, and server-side functions.
- Separate read and write actions. Require a human approval step for modifications, external messages, deletions, and other consequential operations.
- Secure persistence. Use encrypted storage, TLS, encrypted backups, network isolation, and an encrypted filesystem for SQLite-only deployments.
- Minimize logs. Prefer metadata-only audit records unless full chat content has an approved retention and access policy.
- Test deletion. Remove a file through File Manager, then check backups, exports, logs, embeddings, and downstream services for retained copies.
- Review after every change. Confirm the endpoint, tool list, permissions, retention terms, and data destinations before the next sensitive request.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“The model is local, so every upload is local.”
Why it fails: Extraction, embeddings, search, or a connector may be hosted elsewhere.
Fix: Trace each file-processing and retrieval step and replace or restrict remote services.
“Self-hosted means only the end user can access chats.”
Why it fails: Administrators, database and host operators, backup holders, and secret holders remain inside the deployment’s trust boundary.
Fix: Define operator roles, encrypt storage and backups, isolate networks, and separate deployments where required.
“Deleting the upload removes all copies.”
Why it fails: Backups, exports, logs, and downstream providers may retain independent copies.
Fix: Follow each system’s deletion and retention procedure and document completion.
“A read-only tool cannot cause harm.”
Why it fails: Retrieved confidential data can be exposed, and document text can attempt prompt injection.
Fix: Review retrieved content, restrict outputs, and require approval for any action that changes systems or discloses data.
“Turning off one cloud switch blocks every network request.”
Why it fails: Ollama’s cloud setting governs Ollama’s own cloud models and web search, not another application’s connector, parser, or embedding endpoint.
Fix: Inspect the complete data-flow map and apply network egress controls where policy requires them.
Choose controls according to your threat model
There is no universally private configuration. The right design depends on the sensitivity of the data, the people who must administer the system, the connected capabilities you need, and your ability to patch, monitor, encrypt, back up, and delete data correctly. For low-risk material, a hosted model with approved connectors may be adequate. For confidential material, use an approved local or private endpoint, local processing for extraction and embeddings, narrowly scoped tools, encrypted storage and backups, and a small, accountable operator group. For highly restricted teams, separate deployments, credentials, databases, backups, operators, and model providers can reduce shared trust.
Product documentation and policies were checked on October 13, 2026. Ollama’s privacy policy was last updated in March 2026; other product documentation may change without a displayed publication date. Recheck the current terms and controls before relying on them for regulated or highly confidential workloads.

Frequently Asked Questions
If my model runs locally, can a connected MCP server still see my files?
Yes. The server may receive tool arguments, retrieved records, file contents, or other context independently of the local model. Evaluate its operator, permissions, retention, and residency separately.
Does disabling Ollama cloud features make my whole AI stack offline?
No. Setting disable_ollama_cloud or OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 disables Ollama cloud models and web search after a restart, but other applications can still contact remote parsers, embedding services, search providers, or MCP servers.
What should I check before approving an MCP tool?
Check the server identity, fields and scopes in its tool definition, data returned, read versus write capability, authentication account, retention terms, residency, and the procedure for revocation. Start with synthetic data and read-only access.
Does deleting a file from Open WebUI delete every copy?
It removes the uploaded file and associated Knowledge Base entries and vector embeddings through File Manager, but independent backups, exports, logs, and downstream services may retain copies. Verify each system’s deletion process.
Is self-hosting enough for confidential conversations?
Not by itself. Application administrators, database and host operators, backup holders, and people with live secrets may access data. Define those roles and use encryption, isolation, and separate deployments where needed.
Should audit logs contain complete prompts and responses?
Use metadata-only audit logs by default. Store full conversation content only when approved, with a defined audience, retention period, encryption, and deletion process.
Can a document retrieved by a local model be dangerous?
Yes. Document text can contain prompt injection that attempts to change model behavior or trigger tools. Treat retrieved content as untrusted, constrain permissions, inspect tool calls, and require approval for consequential actions.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Is buying an external SSD a privacy control?
It can provide local capacity for model files or encrypted backups, but the device is not encrypted automatically. Enable full-disk or volume encryption and protect the recovery key; hardware alone does not make connected services private.
The Bottom Line
A local model is one privacy boundary, not the whole system. Map every endpoint and storage location, keep sensitive processing on approved infrastructure, grant tools the smallest possible permissions, require review for writes and disclosures, encrypt persistence and backups, and recheck connectors after every change.
