RedM RCON is enabled in the server’s active server.cfg with two settings: set gamename rdr3 identifies the instance as RedM, and set rcon_password "your-long-random-secret" turns on FXServer’s remote console. RCON communicates over UDP. After saving the file, restart the server through the same startup method that normally launches it, allow the provider’s assigned RCON UDP port through the firewall, and test with a harmless command such as status.
There is no single RCON port guaranteed for every RedM installation. Your host, control panel, container, or network administrator must tell you which UDP port is mapped to RCON. The game endpoint and txAdmin web panel are separate services and do not prove that RCON is reachable.

What RedM RCON does
RCON (remote console) lets an administrator send server-management commands without opening the RedM game client or logging into the machine interactively. It is useful for checking player and resource state, running administrative commands, and integrating a console tool into a private operations network.
RedM runs on the FXServer family used by Cfx.re. The RCON mechanism is therefore configured with the same rcon_password command used by FXServer, while the game selector must identify the instance as RedM. The official Cfx.re Server Commands reference states: “Sets the RCon password, if unset then RCon will be disabled. FXServer RCon uses UDP.” That sentence contains the two facts that cause most setup mistakes: the password setting is the enable switch, and the transport is UDP rather than TCP.

RCON is not the txAdmin panel. txAdmin is a web interface with its own address and port, and a working panel does not demonstrate that the game or RCON endpoint is externally reachable.
Before editing the server
Confirm where the active configuration comes from
Find the server.cfg that the running instance actually loads. A machine can contain several server-data directories, test configurations, or provider-generated files. If the server is managed by txAdmin, use the configuration selected by that server profile rather than editing an unused copy.
Keep a private backup of the current file before changing it. Do not paste the backup, the password, license key, database credentials, or txAdmin credentials into a public issue, chat, screenshot, or support ticket. If support needs the file, replace every secret with a neutral description before sending it.
Identify the startup model
Decide whether the instance is launched by txAdmin or by a manual FXServer startup process. The restart procedure matters: changing the right file but restarting a different process leaves the old password active.
- txAdmin-managed: txAdmin is bundled with FXServer and starts automatically when FXServer is started without the
+exec server.cfgargument. The panel’s server profile determines which configuration is used. - Manual launch: the normal Cfx.re vanilla flow starts from the server-data directory and explicitly uses
+exec server.cfg.
Choose a dedicated RCON secret
Use a long, randomly generated value that is used nowhere else. Do not reuse an account password, hosting-panel password, database password, or the sv_licenseKey. Anyone who obtains the RCON secret and can reach the UDP endpoint may be able to issue administrative commands.

Configure RedM and enable RCON
1. Set the RedM game selector
In the active configuration, add or retain:
set gamename rdr3rdr3 is the RedM game name. Without it, an FXServer configuration may not run in the intended RDR2/RedM mode. The RedM setup recipe also identifies sv_enforceGameBuild 1491 and redm-map-one as parts of a default RedM configuration. Those settings belong to the broader game setup; they are not replacements for the RCON password line.
2. Add the RCON password
Add one active password assignment, with the secret enclosed in quotes:

set rcon_password "REPLACE_WITH_A_LONG_RANDOM_SECRET"Replace the example text with your own value. Do not leave the value empty, and do not leave the literal placeholder in production. An unset or empty password disables RCON according to the official command behavior.
Search the entire file for additional rcon_password lines. A later assignment can override an earlier one, while a typo in the file you edited may have no effect if another configuration is loaded. Keep the final active assignment unambiguous.
3. Save without exposing the secret
Restrict access to the configuration according to your operating system and provider controls. If your host offers protected variables or secret storage, use it where supported. Never commit the file to a public repository or include the secret in a diagnostic bundle.

Restart through the supported path
txAdmin-managed server
- Save the profile’s active configuration after adding
set gamename rdr3andset rcon_password. - Use txAdmin’s normal stop and start or restart controls. Do not launch a second copy manually while the panel-managed process is still running.
- Wait for the new FXServer process to finish starting, then use the panel’s console or logs to confirm that this is the instance you changed.
txAdmin’s web port and the RCON port are independent. Seeing the panel online only confirms that the panel service is responding; it does not confirm the RCON UDP path.

- Change the
server.cfgin the server-data directory used by the startup command. - Start the server with the normal vanilla procedure, including the intended
+exec server.cfgflow. - Check the startup output to make sure the expected server-data directory and configuration were loaded.
Always perform a full restart after changing rcon_password. A running process will not reliably adopt a changed configuration file merely because the file was saved.
Understand the ports and network path
RCON uses UDP, so a firewall rule that allows only TCP will not be sufficient. The exact RCON port is deployment-specific. Providers may assign, remap, or hide it behind a container or control-panel allocation, and the official RCON command reference does not define one universal port.

The values described as “commonly” used are not a promise that your installation has those ports. NAT, containers, shared hosts, and provider allocations can change the externally visible number. Record the public address and RCON UDP port supplied for your specific instance.
Restrict the source network
If your firewall or provider supports an IP allowlist, permit only the administrator workstation, office network, VPN range, or private management subnet that needs RCON. A private network or VPN is preferable to exposing an administrative UDP service to the entire internet. If the provider offers a private endpoint, use it for the RCON client and keep the public rule closed.

Connect and verify RCON
Collect the four connection values
An RCON client needs:
- the server address that is reachable from the client;
- the provider-assigned RCON UDP port;
- the exact password from the active configuration; and
- a client that supports FXServer RCON over UDP.
Some tools ask for a host and port in separate fields; others use an endpoint profile. Enter the RCON port, not the txAdmin web port or the game port, unless your provider explicitly maps them that way.
Run a harmless test
Connect after the restart and issue status. Cfx.re documents status as a management command provided by the rconlog resource. A successful response shows that authentication, UDP reachability, and command handling are working together. Avoid testing with disruptive commands on a live server.
Interpret the result
- Authentication succeeds and a response appears: the password, port, firewall path, and server process are aligned.
- The client times out: investigate the address, UDP port mapping, firewall, provider allocation, and whether the server is running.
- The client reports a bad password: check the active file, quoting, later assignments, and whether the process was restarted after the change.
- The connection works but
statusis unknown: verify that the expected resources, includingrconlog, are running and that you connected to the intended instance.
Systematic troubleshooting
Work from the configuration outward. Changing several variables at once makes it difficult to tell which correction fixed the problem.

Verify the file before changing the network
- Read the exact configuration path selected by txAdmin or the manual startup command.
- Confirm
set gamename rdr3is present for the RedM instance. - Confirm exactly one intended, non-empty
rcon_passwordassignment is active. - Restart the same process that serves the game.
- Only then troubleshoot the UDP firewall and provider mapping.
Security practices for a production server
Keep administrative secrets separate
Treat the RCON password, sv_licenseKey, database credentials, and txAdmin credentials as separate high-value secrets. A password that is safe for one service is not automatically safe for another. Store them in protected configuration or provider secret settings, and redact them from logs and support material.

Do not create a broad internet firewall rule simply because a client cannot connect. First confirm the provider’s assigned UDP port and then restrict the rule by source IP, VPN, private network, or provider access control. If no restriction is possible, consider whether RCON should be enabled at all on that public endpoint.
Rotate a compromised password
- Generate a new random secret on a trusted administrator device.
- Replace the active
rcon_passwordvalue in the correct configuration. - Restart the server through txAdmin or the normal manual startup path.
- Update every approved RCON client and secret store.
- Review firewall allowlists and remove unknown source addresses.
To disable RCON during an incident, remove the password assignment or leave it unset, then restart the server. Because the command reference defines an unset password as disabled, the restart is part of the change, not an optional cleanup step.
Choosing a hosting and administration model
RCON can run on a self-hosted machine or on a managed RedM provider. The important differences are operational rather than the configuration syntax: both use the RedM selector and rcon_password, but the person controlling the network and lifecycle changes.

Whichever model you choose, obtain the actual RCON address and UDP port, document who may use it, and keep the secret out of shared operational notes.
What to look for in an RCON client
Client choice does not change the server configuration, but it affects the safety and reliability of administration. Before installing a tool, check that it explicitly supports FXServer RCON over UDP rather than a TCP-only protocol.
- UDP support: the client must send and receive FXServer RCON traffic over UDP.
- Protected password storage: avoid tools that place the secret in an easily readable shared file or display it in logs.
- Command history: history is useful for operations, but it should not retain passwords or destructive commands where untrusted users can read it.
- Access controls: separate administrator accounts or local permissions reduce accidental use by unauthorized operators.
- Source-IP restriction: the tool or surrounding network should allow administration only from approved addresses.
- Clear endpoint profiles: use separate profiles for production and test servers so a harmless check is not accidentally sent to the wrong instance.
Operational checklist
- Configuration: the active file contains
set gamename rdr3and one non-emptyset rcon_passwordline. - Startup: the server was restarted through the txAdmin-managed or manual path that normally launches it.
- Networking: the provider-confirmed RCON UDP port is mapped to the running instance and is not confused with TCP 40120 or the game endpoint commonly associated with 30120.
- Firewall: only the required UDP path is open, preferably to an allowlisted management network.
- Verification: a compatible client authenticates and returns a response to
status. - Secrets: the password and other credentials are stored privately and have not appeared in public logs or support material.
Once these checks pass, RCON is configured as a RedM service rather than merely as a line in a text file: the right game selector, active configuration, restarted process, UDP mapping, firewall policy, and client credentials all agree.
