How to Host a Minecraft Server with the Create Mod

To host a Create Mod server, first choose one exact Minecraft: Java Edition version, one loader (Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric), and a Create build made for that combination. Install that loader’s dedicated server, launch it once to generate the files, accept the EULA, place the matching Create JAR in /mods, and start the loader server again. Every player must use the same Minecraft version, loader family, Create version, and required dependencies.

What you must decide before downloading anything

Create is a Minecraft: Java Edition mod. The project lists builds for Forge and NeoForge, while a separate port provides Fabric compatibility. These are different server ecosystems: a Forge or NeoForge Create JAR cannot be dropped into a Fabric server, and a Fabric build cannot be used by a Forge server.

1. Minecraft version: for example, the exact 1.x release shown on the Create download page.
2. Loader: Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric.
3. Create version: the build that explicitly lists your Minecraft version and loader.
4. Dependencies: any library or companion mods required by that Create build.

Download the server loader, Create file, and dependencies only after those values match. “Almost the same” versions are not interchangeable: a mod compiled for one Minecraft release or loader may fail during startup even when the filename looks similar.

Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric?

Pick one row and keep it for the entire server and client setup. If you change loaders later, treat it as a new installation and re-check every mod.

Java requirements and server prerequisites

Java must match both the Minecraft release and the loader documentation. Fabric’s official guidance recommends Java 17 for Minecraft 1.17 through 1.20.4, and Java 21 for Minecraft 1.20.5 and newer. Current Forge documentation specifies a 64-bit Java 21 JDK or JVM prerequisite. If a loader’s current installer states a different requirement for your selected release, follow that requirement instead of relying on an older tutorial.

Also prepare an empty server directory, permission to create files there, enough storage for the world and backups, and the ability to edit text files. On a rented host, verify that you can upload custom JAR files and select the required Java runtime.

Install a self-hosted Create server

1. Install the required Java version

Install the Java release required by your chosen Minecraft version and loader. Open a terminal or command prompt in the server environment and run java -version. If the result shows an older major version, a 32-bit build, or a different Java installation than the one your script will use, correct that before installing the loader. Multiple Java installations are common; the version printed by the actual start script is the one that matters.

2. Create a dedicated server folder

Make a new, otherwise empty directory such as Minecraft-Create-Server. Keeping this server separate from your client instances prevents accidental mixing of client-only files, saves, and mods. Give the account that will run the server read/write permission to the directory.

3. Install the loader’s dedicated server

Use the dedicated-server method for the loader you selected:

• Fabric: use the Fabric server launcher JAR and the launcher instructions for your Minecraft version.
• Forge: run the Forge server installer; it generates the loader files and a Forge server launcher.
• NeoForge: run the NeoForge server installer and use the generated NeoForge launcher files.

Do not simply place a vanilla server JAR in the folder and expect Create to load. The loader has to initialize first so it can discover and load mods.

4. Launch once to generate configuration files

Start the newly installed server once. The first run creates files and folders such as eula.txt, server.properties, the world directory, and the loader’s configuration directories. A normal first run may stop immediately because the EULA has not yet been accepted.

5. Accept the EULA

Open eula.txt, read the Minecraft EULA, and change the acceptance line to eula=true only if you agree to it. Save the file, then start the server again. Forge documents the initial shutdown before this edit as expected behavior, not evidence that Create is broken.

6. Add Create and dependencies

Open the server’s /mods directory and copy in the exact Create JAR for your Minecraft version and loader. Add every dependency named by that Create build as well. Keep one copy of each file; duplicate versions of the same mod can cause loader errors.

For Forge, start the generated forge-[...] server JAR. Starting minecraft_server.jar launches vanilla Minecraft and makes it appear that Create is missing because Forge never ran. For NeoForge, use the generated NeoForge launcher. For Fabric, use the Fabric server launcher.

7. Use a loader-specific start script

Fabric documents this basic pattern:

java -Xmx2G -jar <fabric server launcher jar file name> nogui

Replace the angle-bracket text with the real launcher filename. The -Xmx2G value is an example maximum heap allocation, not a guaranteed player capacity or a universal recommendation for every Create world. Adjust memory only after considering the world, contraptions, trains, view distance, simulation distance, and other installed mods, and follow the selected loader’s current guidance.

Forge and NeoForge installations commonly include generated launcher scripts or files. Use those generated launchers so the loader can apply its class path and arguments, rather than inventing a vanilla command. Keep the script in the server directory and document which Java executable it uses.

8. Confirm a clean startup

Watch the console for the loader to finish, then stop the server from the console rather than closing the window. A successful first setup should leave a world directory, configuration files, and a server that reaches its ready state without a mod-loading exception. If it crashes, stop here and resolve the version, loader, Java, or dependency mismatch before creating a world you intend to keep.

Make the client and server match

Create runs on both the client and the server. Installing it only on the server is not enough for ordinary players. Every player should create a client instance with:

• the identical Minecraft version;
• the same loader family and loader release required by the mod list;
• the identical Create version;
• all required dependencies at compatible versions;
• any additional gameplay mods that the server requires.

Compare the actual filenames and loader logs, not just a modpack name. A client-only visual or interface mod may belong only on the client; do not copy it to the server unless its documentation says it is safe there. Conversely, a server-required content mod must be present on every joining client.

Choose how players will connect

Self-hosting from your own network

Self-hosting gives you direct control over the files, world saves, backups, Java runtime, and update schedule. You are also responsible for the network path: the server computer must remain online, the operating system firewall must allow the server process, and your router or gateway may need a forwarding rule to the server’s local address. Some internet connections do not provide an inbound public address, so forwarding alone may not make the server reachable; ask your internet provider about carrier-grade NAT if outside players cannot connect.

Keep the server’s local address stable, restrict administrative access, and share only the public address players need. Never publish console credentials or grant operator privileges casually. Test from a different network, such as a phone hotspot, because a test from inside the same home network can succeed even when outside connections are blocked.

Using a Minecraft hosting provider

A provider can supply an always-on machine, a control panel, and a network endpoint, reducing local port-forwarding and power-management work. It does not remove compatibility decisions: you still need the exact loader, Minecraft version, Create build, dependencies, and Java runtime.

Before paying, ask the provider these specific questions:

• Can I select the exact Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric loader release I need?
• Can I upload arbitrary custom mod JARs and edit the server’s /mods and configuration folders?
• Which Java major versions are available, and can I choose 17 or 21 when required?
• Can I use the loader’s documented startup command or generated launcher?
• Are automated backups available, and can I download a backup before an upgrade?
• Can I access the live console and server files?
• Where is the machine located, and what support exists if a mod crashes during startup?
• What CPU, memory, storage, and pricing limits apply to the plan?

Fabric’s server guidance notes that its launcher can work as a drop-in replacement on Minecraft-specific hosts, admin panels, or start scripts, but also advises confirming Fabric support with the provider. Apply the same principle to Forge and NeoForge: obtain confirmation for your precise version and custom mod list rather than relying on a generic “modded” label.

Memory and performance planning

There is no authoritative RAM-per-player number for Create. A world with a few simple machines behaves differently from one with large contraptions, trains, automation addons, high view distance, and many active chunks. Player count alone is therefore a poor sizing method.

Start with the loader’s documented example and observe the server. If the process repeatedly runs out of heap, the operating system swaps, or the tick rate falls while machines are active, investigate the cause before blindly adding memory. Reduce simulation or view distance, limit permanently loaded areas, remove unnecessary entities, and check whether an addon is responsible. More allocated RAM cannot fix an incompatible JAR, an overloaded CPU, or a broken dependency.

Record the Java version, loader version, Create version, memory flags, and mod list whenever the server is stable. That record makes a rollback possible after an update.

Updating without losing a world

1. Stop the server cleanly and make a complete copy of the world directory, configuration files, /mods, and startup scripts.
2. Read the target Create and loader release notes for Minecraft-version and dependency requirements.
3. Test the new combination in a separate directory or copied world first.
4. Update the server and every client together; do not let half the players use the old Create build.
5. Start the test server, inspect the console, and enter the world to check machines, inventories, trains, and chunk loading.
6. Only then replace the live installation, retaining the previous files until the new version has been proven.

Never assume that a loader update, Minecraft update, or Create update is reversible without a backup. World data can be changed during a failed migration.

Troubleshooting by symptom

Keep the complete crash report and the last section of the console log when asking for help. The exact exception, mod list, Minecraft version, loader, and Java version are more useful than a screenshot of the final “server stopped” line.

A practical launch checklist

• One Minecraft: Java Edition version is written down.
• One loader family is selected and installed as a dedicated server.
• The Java major version and 64-bit requirement match the loader documentation.
• The first launch generated eula.txt, server.properties, and world files.
• The EULA is accepted before the second launch.
• The matching Create JAR and all required dependencies are in /mods.
• The startup script launches Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric—not the vanilla server JAR.
• Every client has the same required versions and dependencies.
• A clean backup exists before creating or upgrading the live world.
• Your host or network path has been tested from outside the server’s local network.

Final recommendation

For maximum control, self-host the loader’s dedicated server in its own directory, keep a written version matrix, and back up before every mod or Minecraft update. For less local networking work, use a provider only after it confirms support for your exact loader, Java version, custom JARs, startup method, backups, and file access. The reliable rule is simple: one Minecraft version, one loader family, one matching Create build, and identical client/server files.
