Then monitor the combined workload and adjust. There is no universal safe transcode count or backup start time: the right setup depends on your NAS, media, clients, and actual usage.
Find out whether Plex is transcoding
Plex can play a file directly, convert only its container, or transcode media to meet the client’s capabilities and playback settings. A file that works on one device may need conversion on another. Container, codecs, resolution, bitrate, subtitle compatibility, requested quality, and remote bandwidth can all affect the playback path. Plex explains the differences in its Direct Play, Direct Stream and Transcoding guidance.

Check what is happening during playback rather than assuming every stream is a transcode. When practical, use a client and media format that support Direct Play or Direct Stream. Subtitles deserve particular attention: an incompatible subtitle format can trigger a video transcode even when the audio, video, and container would otherwise be compatible. Plex’s streaming media guidance describes these playback modes and compatibility factors.

Leave transcoder quality on Automatic
Plex recommends Automatic transcoder quality for most users. In Plex Web, open Settings > Server > Transcoder and check the current setting. Avoid changing quality settings in an attempt to solve contention before you know which streams are being converted.

- Entry-level NAS Personal Storage:UGREEN NAS DH2300 is your first and best NAS made easy. It is designed for beginners who want a simple, private way to store videos, photos and personal files, which is intuitive for users moving from cloud storage or external drives and move away from scattered date across devices. This entry-level NAS 2-bay perfect for personal entertainment, photo storage, and easy data backup (doesn't support Docker or virtual machines).
- Set Your Devices Free, Expand Your Digital World: This unified storage hub supports massive capacity up to 64TB.*Storage drives not included. Stop Deleting, Start Storing. You can store 22 million 3MB images, or 2 million 30MB songs, or 43K 1.5GB movies or 67 million 1MB documents! UGREEN NAS is a better way to free up storage across all your devices such as phones, computers, tablets and also does automatic backups across devices regardless of the operating system—Window, iOS, Android or macOS.
- The Smarter Long-term Way to Store: Unlike cloud storage with recurring monthly fees, a UGREEN NAS enclosure requires only a one-time purchase for long-term use. For example, you only need to pay $459.98 for a NAS, while for cloud storage, you need to pay $719.88 per year, $2,159.64 for 3 years, $3,599.40 for 5 years. You will save $6,738.82 over 10 years with UGREEN NAS! *NAS cost based on DH2300 + 12TB HDD; cloud cost based on 12TB plan (e.g. $59.99/month).
- Blazing Speed, Minimal Power: Equipped with a high-performance processor, 1GbE port, and 4GB RAM on Board, this NAS handles multiple tasks with ease. File transfers reach up to 125MB/s—a 1GB file takes only 8 seconds. Don't let slow clouds hold you back; they often need over 100 seconds for the same task. The difference is clear.
- Let AI Better Organize Your Memories: UGREEN NAS uses AI to tag faces, locations, texts, and objects—so you can effortlessly find any photo by searching for who or what's in it in seconds. It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Bound simultaneous video transcodes
The Transcoder settings also include a maximum number of simultaneous video transcodes. A limit can prevent conversion jobs from multiplying when the NAS is busy with backups or other services. Choose a conservative ceiling based on the streams your household actually needs and the NAS’s behavior under load—not a number borrowed from another model. Plex documents the setting in its transcoder configuration guidance.
Consider hardware acceleration only if your NAS supports it
Hardware acceleration can reduce the processing burden of transcoding and may allow more streams, but it is not a universal NAS setting. Confirm that the exact NAS hardware and software combination is supported before enabling it; the NAS brand alone does not establish compatibility. Plex also warns that hardware-accelerated output can have quality or compatibility trade-offs in some cases. Its hardware-accelerated streaming documentation covers requirements and setup.

Schedule backups and integrity checks around viewing
Use observed runtimes to choose a backup window
For Synology Hyper Backup, schedule slow tasks during off-peak hours where possible. Use previous task durations to leave enough time for each job, and account for other scheduled NAS work. Synology recommends off-peak scheduling and troubleshooting slow tasks in its Hyper Backup troubleshooting guidance.

Keep an integrity check from colliding with a scheduled backup
Synology documents that a scheduled Hyper Backup task may wait up to three hours behind an integrity check before the scheduled task is skipped. That timeout describes the cited Hyper Backup behavior; it is not a general rule for other backup software. Give the integrity check its own window, separate from the backup task, and allow enough time for both based on their observed runtimes. See Synology’s Hyper Backup documentation.
Other backup jobs may queue and run sequentially. Stagger them rather than assuming that overlapping schedules will run concurrently or finish on time.

Measure the combined workload and tune it
Use DSM Resource Monitor to inspect CPU, memory, network, and storage while Plex is playing representative media and while the backup window is active. Synology recommends identifying the service or process responsible when CPU utilization is extremely high; a high reading alone does not identify the cause. Its Resource Monitor documentation explains the monitoring tools.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Test typical playback. Include the client devices and media types that are most likely to trigger conversion, including subtitle use and remote playback if relevant.
- Observe a backup window. Note whether playback, backup completion, or other NAS services are affected, and record how long each task takes.
- Change one workload lever at a time. Move the backup window, separate integrity checks, stagger backup jobs, lower the simultaneous video-transcode limit, or reduce avoidable transcodes by improving client and media compatibility.
- Observe again. Keep the changes that improve responsiveness without preventing the playback and backup work you need.
The monitoring approach matters because Plex processing needs vary with media and client, and the cited guidance does not establish a universal CPU threshold, safe transcode count, or ideal schedule for every NAS.

Choose the adjustment that matches the symptom
| What you observe | What to check or change |
|---|---|
| Playback slows only for some files or clients | Check whether those sessions transcode; review codec, container, requested quality, remote bandwidth, and subtitle compatibility. Prefer Direct Play or Direct Stream where practical. |
| Playback slows when several conversions overlap | Set a more conservative simultaneous video-transcode limit and reassess with representative streams. |
| Playback suffers during a backup window | Move or stagger backup work outside expected viewing peaks, using measured task runtimes. |
| A scheduled Hyper Backup task is skipped after an integrity check | Give the integrity check and backup separate schedule windows; the documented wait-before-skip behavior is specific to Synology Hyper Backup. |
| CPU remains heavily loaded despite fewer transcodes | Use DSM Resource Monitor to identify the service or process creating the load, then adjust the relevant workload rather than assuming Plex is the only cause. |
