Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →To set up Plex on an NVIDIA SHIELD TV, first choose whether SHIELD will only play media from a Plex server elsewhere or host Plex Media Server itself. For a SHIELD-hosted server, launch Plex on SHIELD, link your account, enable Plex Media Server during setup, then finish configuring the new server in Plex Web App from another device on the same network.
Choose where Plex Media Server will run
Plex has two separate roles: the app that plays media and Plex Media Server, which organizes and shares your library. SHIELD can serve as the player for a server on a PC or NAS, or it can host the server itself. NVIDIA’s SHIELD TV User Guide describes both Plex client and Plex Media Server as pre-installed, but the exact apps and screens can vary by SHIELD model and software version.

- Use SHIELD as a client: choose this if a PC or NAS already runs Plex Media Server. Set up the Plex app on SHIELD and connect it to that existing server.
- Use SHIELD as the server: choose this if you want SHIELD to run the server as well as play media. You will need to select the media locations during server configuration.
NVIDIA documents SHIELD-hosted Plex access to on-device, USB-connected, and network-accessible storage. Its documentation does not establish a controlled performance comparison among SHIELD, PC, or NAS hosting, so choose based on where your files are kept and whether that device is available when you want to watch.
Set up Plex Media Server on SHIELD
- Open the Plex app on SHIELD and follow the on-screen instructions to link it to your Plex account. The app’s linking flow may direct you to Plex’s linking page.
- When asked whether to enable Plex Media Server, select Enable Plex Media Server if SHIELD should host the server. If you only want SHIELD to access a server elsewhere, leave this option disabled.
- On a computer, phone, or tablet connected to the same network as SHIELD, open Plex Web App. Find the new SHIELD Android TV server under the servers list and select it.
- Complete the setup steps in the browser and choose the location of your media. Depending on your arrangement, this can be SHIELD storage, a USB drive connected to SHIELD, or network-accessible storage.
The browser-based setup is an important part of the SHIELD-hosted flow: linking the TV app alone does not complete configuration of the new server.

Choose storage for your media
USB drive
A USB drive is a straightforward option when your library lives on external storage. NVIDIA’s USB-storage guidance lists FAT32, exFAT, NTFS, and HFS+ as supported filesystems. FAT32 cannot handle an individual file larger than 4 GB, so it may not suit a library containing larger video files.
Keep the drive as removable storage if you want it to hold media and remain usable with other devices. SHIELD also offers a device or internal storage option; adopting a drive for that purpose formats and encrypts it, changing how it can be used elsewhere. Do not choose device storage casually for a media drive you expect to move between devices.

Network storage or NAS
A NAS or other network storage can keep media available to SHIELD over your home network. NVIDIA documents adding network storage through SHIELD settings, including a manual-add option for a NAS that is not discovered automatically. Menu names and locations can differ by SHIELD software version; look in your device’s storage settings for network-storage controls. If your Plex server runs on the NAS rather than SHIELD, configure SHIELD as a client for that server instead.
SHIELD storage
On-device storage is another documented media location. Base the choice and capacity on the size of your own library; NVIDIA’s cited setup guidance does not establish a universal drive capacity or speed requirement.

Optional: Live TV and DVR
Plex Live TV and DVR are optional rather than necessary for watching an ordinary media library. NVIDIA’s guidance describes the feature with a digital tuner, antenna, and Plex Pass. Confirm the current Plex account requirements and tuner compatibility for your SHIELD model, software version, and region before buying hardware: older support notes do not guarantee that a particular tuner remains compatible today.

SHIELD and Plex interfaces can change, and NVIDIA’s published flow does not establish a complete current troubleshooting procedure for discovery, remote access, codecs, or router settings. If a label or screen differs, follow the instructions in the Plex app currently installed on SHIELD and consult NVIDIA’s support documentation for your specific model and software version rather than assuming that an older menu path applies.
