To control a child’s PlayStation Store spending, set a Monthly Spending Limit on the child’s account through Family Management. To require a password for purchases on your own adult account, enable Require Password at Checkout. These are separate controls: the child limit governs purchases made by the child using the family manager’s wallet, while checkout password protection does not cover child accounts or wallet funding.
Choose the control that matches the account
| Control | Who sets it | What it covers | Important exception |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly Spending Limit | The family manager, or an appointed guardian with access to the Family app | Purchases made through a child account, paid from the family manager’s wallet | The default limit is zero; a child account does not have its own PlayStation wallet. |
| Require Password at Checkout | The adult account holder | Store purchases on devices used to access PlayStation Store | It does not apply to child accounts or to adding funds to a wallet. |
The setup paths below come from PlayStation’s U.S. support guidance, except the Family app steps, which are documented on PlayStation’s Canada support page. Menus and accepted payment methods may vary by region; if a label differs, check PlayStation’s parental-controls guidance or the support site for your account region.

Set a monthly spending limit for a child account
PlayStation says the child-account monthly limit defaults to zero. A zero limit prevents purchases through that account. Increase it only if the child is allowed to make purchases up to the amount you choose; those purchases draw on the family manager’s wallet.
On the web
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Open Family Management and select the child.
- Choose Edit beside Monthly Spending Limit and set the amount.
On PS5
- Go to Settings > Family and Parental Controls > Family Management.
- Select the child, then open Parental Controls > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the monthly amount.
On PS4
- Go to Settings > Parental Controls/Family Management > Family Management. Re-enter the account password if prompted.
- Select the child, then open Applications/Devices/Network Features > Monthly Spending Limit.
- Set the monthly amount.
In the PlayStation Family app
- Select the child from the app’s home screen.
- Scroll to Monthly Spending Limit and set the amount.
PlayStation’s Family app guidance says an appointed guardian can change spending limits. Consider that delegated authority when deciding whom to appoint as a guardian. See PlayStation’s Family app guide.

Require a password for purchases on an adult account
Require Password at Checkout asks for the account password when a purchase is made. PlayStation says the setting applies across devices used to access PlayStation Store, but it does not apply to child accounts or wallet funding. For the child account, use its Monthly Spending Limit instead.
On the web
- Sign in to Account Management.
- Select Payment Method.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout. See PlayStation’s checkout-password instructions.
On PS5
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Payment and Subscriptions > Purchase Settings.
- Turn on Require Password at Checkout.
On PS4
- Go to Settings > Account Management > Account Information > Wallet > Purchase Settings.
- Set Require Password for Purchases to Yes.
In the PlayStation App
- Select the PlayStation Store icon and open the menu in the top-right corner.
- Select Payment Methods and turn on Require Password at Checkout.
Use separate accounts for adults and children
PlayStation recommends separate child accounts so Store access and spending can be managed through Family Management. The child-account limit is the relevant control for child purchases; the adult checkout password is not a substitute. For broader account-safety guidance, see PlayStation’s guide for parents.

For U.S. users, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s March 2026 PlayStation Network Terms of Service, section 4.6, states: “The default spending limit is zero.” Terms and payment options are region-specific; consult the U.S. terms for that wording and check your regional PlayStation support site for local details. PlayStation’s accepted-payment-methods page also provides U.S. account information.
