To set up phishing-resistant MFA, open an account’s security or sign-in settings and enroll a passkey or FIDO-compatible security key. Add a second authenticator if the service permits it, then arrange recovery before you lose access to your current sign-in method. Menu names and recovery rules differ by service, so follow the account’s current instructions.
What makes a passkey or security key phishing-resistant?
FIDO authenticators used with WebAuthn are a widely available phishing-resistant option, according to NIST’s MFA guidance for small businesses. The credential can be built into a phone or computer, or provided by a separate hardware key.

The protection comes from binding authentication to the legitimate service’s domain. NIST’s Special Publication 800-63B explains that WebAuthn provides verifier name binding: the authenticator selects a secret based on the authenticated domain. A look-alike site therefore cannot simply collect a manually entered code and replay it as though it came from the real service.
Choose the form factor that fits your account and devices
A passkey is a credential managed by a supported device or platform; a security key is a separate physical token. The right option depends on the service, your devices, and any workplace rules—not on a universal ranking of security.
#1 Best Overall

- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
| Decision point | Passkey or platform authenticator | Hardware security key |
|---|---|---|
| Where it lives | Built into or managed by a supported device or platform. Some passkeys can sync across devices. | A separate roaming physical token, commonly used over USB or NFC. |
| Using it | Often unlocked with a device PIN or biometric; cross-device use depends on the platform. | Carry the key and connect or tap it when prompted. |
| Loss and recovery | Correctly implemented syncable authenticators can make cross-device use and recovery easier, but provider-specific recovery still varies. | Register a second key if supported. If the only key is lost, the service’s recovery process may be required. |
| Compatibility | Depends on the service, device, platform, browser, and organizational policy. | Depends on service support and the key’s connection options, such as USB or NFC. |
| Often a good fit when | You want convenient sign-in on supported personal devices. | You want a separate portable authenticator, or your organization requires one. |
NIST describes both device-based and roaming FIDO authenticators in its MFA guidance. For syncable passkeys, provider behavior matters: NIST’s April 23, 2024 announcement describes an interim supplement on syncable authenticators, not a claim that every sync system works the same way.
Enroll a passkey or security key
- Sign in on a trusted device. Open the account’s security, sign-in, or MFA settings. Look for labels such as “passkey,” “security key,” “FIDO,” or “WebAuthn.” CISA advises people to start by checking the security settings of their most-used accounts: CISA’s MFA and account-security advice.
- Choose an offered method. Select a passkey stored or managed on a supported device, or a FIDO-compatible hardware key. Check workplace policy if this is an organization account.
- Follow the service’s prompts. Enrollment varies. For example, Login.gov’s instructions have users nickname the key, insert it, and follow the browser prompts; Login.gov says a code is not needed to use the key. See Login.gov’s authentication-method instructions for its current process. This is an example, not a universal sequence.
- Add another authenticator if possible. A second key or supported passkey can preserve access if the first device is lost. Login.gov, for example, allows multiple security keys; check the current rules for your own service.
- Configure recovery before removing existing methods. Follow the service’s recovery instructions and securely store any recovery codes it issues.
- Confirm the setup works. Use the service’s supported sign-in flow and verify that your backup or recovery option is available before removing an existing method.
Make a recovery plan—and know its limits
Loss of a phone, computer, or key can lock you out if it was your only enrolled authenticator. While you still have account access, identify the service’s recovery process and register an additional authenticator where available. Keep a backup key somewhere safe and separate enough to remain accessible if the primary one is lost.

- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Recovery codes can help restore access, but they are not an equivalent phishing-resistant sign-in method. NIST states, “Look-up secrets are not phishing-resistant,” in SP 800-63B. Store recovery material securely and use it only through the service’s legitimate recovery flow.

When codes are the only option
Manually entered one-time passwords and out-of-band authentication outputs are not phishing-resistant: a code is not bound to the specific session and may be relayed by a fake site. Use them when a service does not offer a phishing-resistant option or as a service-supported fallback, but do not treat them as an equivalent substitute for a passkey or security key. NIST explains the distinction in SP 800-63B.

Which accounts should you secure first?
Enable MFA broadly, and prioritize phishing-resistant sign-in for accounts where a takeover could cause the most harm. CISA and NIST recommend MFA generally, with phishing-resistant methods especially important for sensitive systems and privileged users.
- Primary email accounts, which may be used to reset other accounts.
- Financial accounts that offer passkeys or security keys.
- Work sign-in, remote access, and administrator accounts, following your organization’s policy.
