Hytale’s Update 5 changed the model that many older tutorials describe. Hypixel Studios stated that “a permissions system overhaul has taken place, with permissions no longer being tied to gamemode.” A role is now a collection of permission decisions, so you can give a friend selected moderation commands without granting every power associated with an operator or creative mode.
A permission node is the individual capability checked by the server or a plugin. A group is a named collection of those nodes. The names you choose—Default, Builder, Moderator, or Admin—are labels for administration; the security boundary is the node set behind each label. Update 5 also introduced inheritance and moved existing commands into permission groups, making the group hierarchy part of the access design.

There is no single universal rank recipe. The correct setup depends on which commands, worlds, editor tools, player actions, and join controls your server actually uses. Treat the permission output from your installed release as authoritative rather than copying a command line from an older video or forum post.
Prerequisites and a safe starting point
Install and launch the supported server files
The official server manual documents a dedicated-server layout containing HytaleServer.jar and Assets.zip. It also documents launcher scripts and requires Java 25 for the current server distribution. Confirm the Java version used by the launch script before troubleshooting permissions; a server that is not running the expected build can produce misleading command or plugin errors.

Authenticate before changing access
After the server starts, authenticate from the console or an authorized in-game session with /auth login device. Complete the device-login flow shown by the server. Permission commands are meaningful only after you are connected with an account that has enough authority to change them.
Back up the access configuration
Stop the server, or use a storage snapshot that guarantees a consistent state, before making a major redesign. Retain a copy of the permission configuration and note the server build, installed plugins, and date. A backup lets you recover from an accidental wildcard grant, an inheritance loop, or a lockout that prevents an administrator from joining.
- Keep a separate emergency administrator account that is not used for routine moderation.
- Make permission changes during a maintenance window when possible.
- Record each group’s purpose, parent group, direct grants, and direct denials in an administrator-only document.
- Have a second account available for testing; do not test a restricted rank while logged in as the server owner.
Set up groups and players step by step

Start the exact server build you intend to expose
Launch the dedicated server with the documented script and confirm that it reaches a ready state. Verify that
HytaleServer.jar,Assets.zip, the configuration directory, and plugin files belong to the same release. Mixing files from an older installation can leave you with permission names that no longer exist.Rank #2

Authenticate an administrative session
Use
/auth login deviceand finish the device authorization. If you operate through the console, use the console’s supported administrative context; do not paste player-only commands into a shell that does not accept them.Special offer. Read the installed command help
Run
/perm --helpin game or in the server console. The help output is intentionally the reference for your installed build. Read the subcommands it exposes for groups, inheritance, player assignment, inspection, and removal, then copy the syntax exactly. This avoids relying on an older/opguide whose command names or argument order may have changed. -
Draw the rank boundaries before entering commands
Write down what each job must do and what it must never do. Separate moderation, building, and server administration. For example, a moderator may need chat or player-management commands but not world editing; a builder may need editor powers in a development world but no ability to kick players; an administrator may need both, while the owner retains recovery and configuration authority.

Create the rank groups
Use the group-management operation shown by
/perm --help. In the documented permissions module, groups are implicitly created when permissions are first added, so an empty group may not appear until it has a permission entry. Choose stable names and capitalization, and avoid names that could be confused with plugin-internal groups. -
Add only the required permission nodes
Add individual nodes for the commands and features in each job description. Keep the wildcard grant
*inside a tightly controlled owner group; it can match multiple permissions and makes later audits difficult. Start with no access, add one capability, and test it before adding the next. Use inheritance deliberately
Make a lower rank inherit a clearly defined baseline only when that relationship is useful. A common structure is
Defaultas the minimum player set, withBuilderandModeratoradding different capabilities rather than inheriting from each other. LetAdmininherit shared operational permissions only if every administrator should receive them. Keep owner-level access separate so a routine promotion cannot silently grant recovery powers. -
Assign players to the appropriate group
Use the player-assignment command exposed by the installed build. Check the player’s effective permissions afterward rather than assuming that a successful assignment granted every inherited node. For plugin integrations, group membership and direct user grants are separate operations; document both so a temporary exception does not become invisible.

Configure plugin command permissions
Plugin authors normally protect commands with
requirePermission. Hytale’s API can generate a command permission identifier withHytalePermissions.fromCommand(...). Read each plugin’s release documentation, identify the exact node it checks, and add only that node to the intended group. If a command still reports a denial, inspect the plugin’s declared permission instead of guessing a name from its command label. -
Test from the lowest effective rank upward
Log in with a non-owner account for each rank. Test an allowed command, a deliberately forbidden command, a plugin command, a building or editor action, and any command that affects another player. Record the result and remove any grant that is broader than the job requires.

A practical rank design
The following layout is a starting framework, not a list of built-in Hytale groups. Replace each capability category with the permission nodes exposed by your release and installed plugins.

Compare proposed ranks on six questions: What commands can the rank run? Can it edit worlds or use editor tools? Can it affect other players? Can it bypass join or whitelist controls? Does inheritance create hidden access? Can another administrator understand and audit the result? A good moderator rank answers the first and third questions without accidentally answering the second or granting server-wide control.

The HytaleModding permissions guide describes this evaluation order:
- Direct permissions assigned to the user.
- Permissions inherited from groups.
- Virtual groups.
- The permission’s default value.
The first definitive match wins. This means a direct user grant can override the result that a group would otherwise produce. That is useful for a narrowly scoped exception—for example, one trusted builder needing a single extra tool—but it also makes audits harder because the group definition no longer explains the user’s full access.
Use direct grants as exceptions, not as a second rank system
When a player needs a temporary capability, record the node, reason, approver, and removal date. Prefer changing the player’s group when the capability is permanent or shared by several people. At each review, inspect both group membership and direct user entries; checking groups alone can miss an effective grant.
Understand default values and denials
If no earlier layer supplies a definitive result, Hytale uses the permission’s default value. A plugin may therefore appear to work without a visible group grant, or it may default to denied until an administrator adds the documented node. Test both outcomes with a restricted account instead of inferring behavior from the node’s name.
The special case of join permission
The official API exposes a SERVER_JOIN permission for servers that enable RequireJoinPermission. The API notes that no group receives this permission automatically. If the setting is enabled, grant SERVER_JOIN to the appropriate group, individual users, or a controlled wildcard; otherwise the server can reject everyone, including staff.

Test this setting before disconnecting your owner account. Keep one verified recovery account outside the normal promotion workflow, and confirm that a newly added player receives join access only when intended.
Where permissions are stored and when changes persist
The Hytale server manual says that config.json, permissions.json, and related files are read when the server starts and written when in-game actions occur, such as assigning permissions with commands. Manual edits while the server is running are likely to be overwritten.
Preferred change process
- Use supported in-game or console permission commands for routine changes.
- Stop the server before making a necessary file edit.
- Copy the original files to a dated backup location.
- Make the smallest possible edit and preserve valid JSON syntax.
- Start the server, inspect the console for errors, and verify the effective permissions with test accounts.
- Keep the backup until the new configuration has survived a restart and a real login test.
Do not treat a successful command response as proof that a change is durable. Restart verification catches syntax errors, stale files, and changes that were written to a different server directory than the one actually launched.
Troubleshoot common permission failures

Keep the system maintainable after updates
Permission names, built-in group membership, and plugin command requirements can change. Update 5 already changed the architecture, and the current API documents permission-query constants and command helpers. Treat the release-specific /perm --help output and the documentation for that exact Hytale version as authoritative.
- Before updating, export or back up
permissions.jsonand related configuration while the server is stopped. - Read the update notes for permission, command, authentication, and join-control changes.
- After updating, run
/perm --helpagain and compare available subcommands with your operating notes. - Test one account from every rank, including a denied action and any plugin command that staff rely on.
- Review direct user grants and wildcard matches, not just named groups.
- Remove temporary permissions and former staff from groups promptly.
- Keep a changelog with the date, server build, person who approved the change, and reason for each access modification.
The safest Hytale rank system is intentionally boring: small groups, explicit nodes, limited inheritance, no routine wildcard use, a protected owner account, and repeatable tests after every change. That structure gives moderators the tools they need without turning a helpful role into unrestricted server control.
