To park a domain on a LAMP server, complete two separate jobs: point every hostname at the server with DNS, then configure Apache to route those hostnames to the intended document root. DNS alone does not select a website, and an Apache virtual host cannot create public DNS records. After enabling the site, use apachectl -S and hostname-specific requests to confirm that Apache parsed and serves the routing you intended.
Antihost offers Linux VPS plans with full root access, unlimited traffic on a 1 Gbps port and a 14-day free trial.
What a parked domain means on a LAMP server
A parked domain is an additional hostname that should reach a web server already running Linux, Apache, MySQL or MariaDB, and PHP. Apache handles the HTTP routing; DNS only tells clients which IP address to contact. These layers must agree before a request can reach the right site.

There are two common designs:
- Alias to an existing site: the parked name displays the same files as a primary domain. Add it as a
ServerAliasin the existing virtual host and keep one document root. - Independent parked site: the additional domain has its own document root, logs, and virtual-host block. This provides stronger operational separation and is the pattern shown in the procedure below.
Both designs use name-based virtual hosting, so several domains can share one server IP. The browser sends a hostname with its HTTP request; Apache compares that name with each virtual host’s ServerName and ServerAlias.
Before you change anything
Confirm the server and domain details
- You have administrative access to the Linux host and permission to edit Apache configuration.
- Apache is installed, running, and listening on the port you plan to test (normally port 80 for HTTP).
- You know the server’s public IPv4 address and, if applicable, its IPv6 address.
- You control DNS for every hostname that should work: the bare domain, its
wwwform, and any other aliases. - You have chosen whether the parked name shares an existing root or gets a separate root.
Decide which hostnames are authoritative
Write down the exact names before configuring Apache. For example, example.com and www.example.com are different hostnames even though visitors may regard them as one site. A name omitted from DNS or from Apache’s aliases will not be routed as expected.

Step 1: Create DNS records for every hostname
Create an A record for each hostname that should resolve to the server’s IPv4 address. Create an AAAA record as well when the server is reachable over IPv6. Use the DNS provider’s control panel or authoritative DNS service; Apache cannot create these public records.
| Hostname | Typical record | Value |
|---|---|---|
example.com |
A |
Server’s public IPv4 address |
example.com |
AAAA (if IPv6 is enabled) |
Server’s public IPv6 address |
www.example.com |
A and/or AAAA |
The same reachable server address |
The addresses must lead to the host on which Apache is listening. A virtual-host file by itself does not publish a name on the internet. A hosts-file entry can map a name to an address for testing on one machine, but it affects no other client and is not a replacement for DNS.
Check the DNS answer
From a client that can reach the server, query every name separately. For example:
dig +short example.com A
dig +short example.com AAAA
dig +short www.example.com A
dig +short www.example.com AAAA
Use the query results to verify that the bare name and each alias return the intended address. If one name still returns an old address, fix DNS before debugging Apache; the request may be reaching a different machine.
Step 2: Create the document root
For an independent parked site, create a directory such as:
/var/www/example.com/public_html
Place the site’s entry file and application files inside that directory. Set ownership and permissions according to your Linux distribution’s web-server policy. The account Apache runs under must be able to traverse the parent directories and read the files it serves, while write access should be limited to directories that genuinely need it.

If the parked domain is only an alias for an existing site, do not create a second root merely for appearance. Point the alias at the existing virtual host’s DocumentRoot instead. Separate roots are useful when content, deployment, logs, or access controls must be isolated.
Add a temporary test file
For a new root, add a simple page containing a distinctive phrase such as the domain name. This makes it obvious which document root answered during testing. Remove or replace the page when the real application is deployed.
Step 3: Write a name-based Apache virtual host
In the Apache sites directory used by your distribution, create a site file for the parked domain. A complete HTTP example is:
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerName example.com
ServerAlias www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/example.com/public_html
<Directory /var/www/example.com/public_html>
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
ErrorLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example.com-error.log
CustomLog ${APACHE_LOG_DIR}/example.com-access.log combined
</VirtualHost>
ServerName is the canonical name for this virtual host. ServerAlias adds alternate names, such as the www hostname. DocumentRoot tells Apache which directory supplies files. The Directory block grants access to that directory and permits per-directory rules through .htaccess with AllowOverride All; retain that setting only if the application needs it.

Separate error and access logs make it possible to diagnose this domain without mixing its requests with other sites. Keep the ServerName explicit in every block. If it is omitted, Apache can inherit an unintended server name, making matching and diagnostics confusing.
Configuration for a shared parked alias
When the parked name must show exactly the primary site’s content, add the name to that site’s existing block instead of creating a new root:

ServerAlias www.primary.example example.com www.example.com
DocumentRoot /var/www/primary/public_html
Only include names that you control and have pointed at this server. If the parked domain needs different logs, rewrite rules, authentication, or deployment, use its own virtual host rather than a shared alias.
Step 4: Enable the site and reload Apache
Use the configuration layout and service name supplied by your Linux distribution. On Debian-family systems that use the sites-enabled mechanism, a typical sequence is:
sudo a2ensite example.com.conf
sudo systemctl reload apache2
The file name passed to a2ensite must match the site file you created. Other distributions may load files directly from a conf.d directory and use a different service name; place the file where that distribution expects virtual hosts and perform a graceful reload there. A reload applies configuration without unnecessarily terminating existing connections.
If the reload reports an error, do not continue to DNS testing. Correct the syntax or file path first, then reload again. Keep the previous working configuration available so you can restore service if a change has an unintended effect.
Step 5: Inspect Apache’s parsed virtual hosts
Run:
sudo apachectl -S
This command dumps Apache’s interpretation of the virtual-host configuration. Check the output for:
- the address and port, such as
*:80; - the file and line where each virtual host is defined;
- the
ServerNameand everyServerAlias; - which virtual host Apache considers the default for that address and port; and
- unexpected duplicate names or a site file that was never enabled.
This parsed view is more reliable than guessing from file names. If the expected name is absent, Apache has not loaded the block you edited.

Step 6: Test routing with real hostnames
Test each DNS name
After DNS answers show the intended address, request each hostname explicitly:
curl -i http://example.com/
curl -i http://www.example.com/
Confirm that the response body contains the marker from the correct document root and that the status code is what the application expects. Test both the bare domain and every alias; success for one name does not prove that another name is configured.
Test an unknown hostname
Request a hostname that is not listed in any ServerName or ServerAlias:
curl -i http://unlisted.example/
If that name resolves to the server, Apache will still answer. The response reveals which virtual host is the fallback, helping you verify that an accidental default site is not exposing the wrong content.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Test before public DNS is ready
For a local-only test, add a temporary hosts-file mapping on the test machine. Map the intended hostname to the server address, run the same curl requests, and remove the entry afterward. Because the mapping exists on only that machine, it cannot validate public DNS or prove that other users will reach the server.
How Apache selects the virtual host
For an incoming request, Apache first finds the best matching local address and port. Within that address-and-port group, it compares the request hostname with ServerName and ServerAlias. A matching name selects the corresponding block.
Best Value
When no name matches, Apache uses the first virtual host listed for that address and port. Consequently, file order is operationally significant for unmatched traffic. Put the virtual host you intend to serve as the default first, and do not rely on an accidental order created by directory sorting or package installation.
This behavior explains the common “wrong site” symptom: DNS may correctly point to the server, yet a missing alias or unmatched spelling sends the request to the first block rather than the domain you expected.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHTTP is only the initial test: plan HTTPS separately
The configuration above proves HTTP routing on port 80. A production parked domain also needs a TLS virtual-host configuration on the HTTPS port and a certificate covering every hostname users will visit. Add the HTTPS block and certificate before treating the setup as complete, and arrange renewal so an expired certificate does not take the site offline.
HTTP and HTTPS are separate address-and-port combinations in Apache’s matching process. A name that works on port 80 can still fail on port 443 if the TLS virtual host, certificate, or redirect is missing. Test both schemes after TLS is configured:
curl -I http://example.com/
curl -I https://example.com/
curl -I https://www.example.com/
The appropriate certificate provider and renewal mechanism depend on your environment; choose one that covers the exact names in DNS and Apache.
Quick Recap
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Checks | Likely correction |
|---|---|---|
| Another site’s page appears | Verify the URL’s hostname, DNS answer, ServerName, ServerAlias, and the order shown by apachectl -S. |
Add the missing alias or correct the name, then ensure the intended default block is first for that address and port. |
| The domain does not connect | Query its A/AAAA records, check firewall rules, and confirm Apache listens on the requested port. |
Correct the DNS address, open the required port, or configure Apache to listen on that port. |
The bare domain works but www fails |
Query www separately and inspect whether it appears in ServerAlias. |
Create the missing DNS record and add the alias to the correct virtual host. |
| Local testing succeeds but public visitors fail | Inspect the local hosts file and compare it with public DNS answers. | Remove the assumption that a hosts-file entry publishes DNS; create the authoritative public records. |
| The new site is absent from Apache’s view | Run apachectl -S and check the enabled-sites path and file name. |
Enable the file using the distribution’s mechanism, fix syntax errors, and reload Apache. |
| HTTPS shows a certificate or wrong-site error | Check the port-443 virtual host, certificate names, and HTTPS request separately from HTTP. | Add the correct TLS block and certificate coverage, then configure renewal and retest. |
Choosing between an alias and an isolated virtual host
| Decision area | Shared alias | Separate parked-domain vhost |
|---|---|---|
| Isolation | One document root and usually one log set; changes affect every alias. | Own document root and log files, allowing independent deployment and diagnosis. |
| Routing | Several names intentionally map to the same block. | Each block declares its own ServerName and aliases. |
| Operations | Few files to maintain, but one mistake can affect all names. | Distribution-managed site files make ownership and reloads clearer, with more files to manage. |
| Security and policy | Shared rewrite, authentication, and access rules. | Rules can be tailored per domain; permissions still need to follow the distribution’s policy. |
| Best fit | A true alternate name for identical content. | Different content, teams, logs, release schedules, or access requirements. |
Operational checklist
- List the exact bare and alternate hostnames.
- Create matching
Aand, where applicable,AAAArecords. - Confirm DNS answers point to the server that runs Apache.
- Choose a shared document root or create an isolated root such as
/var/www/example.com/public_html. - Set ownership and permissions according to the host distribution’s web-server policy.
- Write a virtual host with explicit
ServerName, the requiredServerAliasvalues, and the correctDocumentRoot. - Enable the site using the distribution’s sites mechanism.
- Reload Apache and resolve any syntax or service errors.
- Run
apachectl -Sand verify names, ports, addresses, and default order. - Request every hostname, including an intentionally unknown name, and inspect the result.
- Configure and test HTTPS separately before production use.
Key principles to keep
- DNS and Apache configuration are independent; completing one does not complete the other.
- Name-based virtual hosting is the normal way to serve multiple domains from one IP address.
- Every virtual host should state its
ServerNameandDocumentRoot; useServerAliasfor alternate hostnames. - The first virtual host for an address and port is the fallback for unmatched names.
apachectl -Sshows Apache’s parsed configuration and is the quickest way to expose an ordering or naming mistake.
