How to Set Up Parental Controls to Reduce Children’s Exposure to Harmful Content

A practical guide to configuring device, account, app, and privacy controls to reduce children’s exposure to harmful online content—without expecting filters to catch everything.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Parental controls work best in layers: set up the child’s account and device, configure controls inside the apps and services they use, then review privacy settings and talk together about what to do if they encounter something upsetting. These tools can reduce exposure, but they cannot guarantee that every harmful image, video, message, or website will be blocked.

Start by mapping the child’s devices and accounts

Before changing settings, make a quick inventory of where the child goes online. A phone-level restriction may not cover a different device, a browser, or activity inside a particular app.

  • List the phones, tablets, computers, consoles, and other connected devices the child uses.
  • Note the accounts, browsers, video services, social apps, and games they use on each one.
  • Ask which devices they use away from home and which accounts they sign into. Controls can depend on the device, account, and service.

Set controls on the child’s account and device

Choose the setup that matches the child’s device and account. Apple Screen Time and Google Family Link have different coverage and requirements; neither should be assumed to control every device or all activity on the internet.

For an iPhone or iPad: Screen Time and Family Sharing

Apple Screen Time includes content and privacy restrictions and Communication Safety for a child’s iPhone or iPad. With Family Sharing, the family organizer or a designated parent or guardian can manage a child’s controls. Because Apple’s menus and supported features change with operating-system releases, use Apple’s current Screen Time instructions and Family Sharing guidance rather than relying on an old menu path.

  • Website or search restrictions.

  • Screen-time schedules or app limits, if time boundaries are part of your family’s plan.

Explain what a restriction does and how the child can ask for help or an exception. A clear process makes it easier to handle a blocked item, a needed app, or a confusing warning without turning the control into a mystery.

Check controls inside each app, game, and service

Open the important services in the inventory and review their own family or safety settings. A device setting should not be treated as a guarantee that every recommendation, message, search, or activity in another app is covered. Google explicitly cautions that Family Link does not block all inappropriate content and that filters are imperfect; its Family Link FAQ explains those limits.

Review privacy permissions as well as content filters

Content controls do not replace privacy checks. Review which apps can access the child’s location, photos, camera, and microphone, and turn off permissions that are not needed. UNICEF’s online safety guidance discusses these permissions alongside helping children learn and participate responsibly online.

Make a plan for upsetting or harmful material

Technical settings cannot anticipate every situation. Agree on a simple response: the child can leave the page or conversation, avoid forwarding the material, use the service’s reporting or blocking options when appropriate, and tell a trusted adult. Keep the conversation calm and make clear that they can ask for help even if they clicked something accidentally or fear they have broken a rule.

Review settings when devices or needs change

Recheck the setup after a software update, when a device or account is added, when the child’s needs change, or after an incident. A short review against the inventory can reveal a new browser, game, or device that was never included in the original setup. Keep the child involved in age-appropriate discussions about what the settings do and when they may be adjusted.
