Start with the online concern your family wants to address, then choose a resource whose age or grade, format, and level of adult involvement fit your child. Free guidance from UNICEF, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC), and Common Sense Education can help families talk about privacy, contact from strangers, gaming, cyberbullying, social media, and screen habits. Use parental controls to support those conversations and practical safety habits—not as a replacement for them.
Choose a resource around the question your family has
A focused question makes it easier to find useful material than starting with a broad search for internet safety. Consider what has changed or prompted concern: a child’s first device, a new game or social platform, contact from strangers, cyberbullying, privacy, or difficulty with screen habits.

UNICEF’s Digital Parenting hub collects family guidance on healthy digital habits, privacy, safety, and harmful content. It can help narrow a broad concern into a topic to discuss or a practical action to take.

| Resource | Audience and format | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| UNICEF Parenting: Online privacy checklist | Parents and caregivers; checklist and family guidance | Privacy, app permissions, parental controls, and conversations about personal information | Settings differ by device, app, game, and platform. Check the current instructions for what your child actually uses. |
| NCMEC NetSmartz | NCMEC describes the free program as serving children ages 5–17. Materials include videos, games, presentations, classroom lessons, tip sheets, and resources for parents and trusted adults. | Online safety and digital citizenship with age- and grade-directed material | Preview the item and consider your child’s age, prior exposure, and needs; a label alone cannot determine fit. |
| Common Sense Education family resources | Family activities, videos, podcasts, and grade- or topic-based materials; some are available in English and Spanish. | Family conversation, digital literacy, and digital well-being | Verify the grade and language for each item. |
| UNICEF Digital Parenting | Families; curated explainers and guides | Broader questions about digital habits and online experiences | Use the hub to identify the specific question you want to address. |
NCMEC organizes NetSmartz materials by audience and school grade. Its resources page advises presenters to review materials and choose what fits the audience’s prior exposure and needs. This is useful for parents too: preview a video, activity, or presentation before deciding whether its examples and tone suit your child.
Match the format to your child and the moment
The same topic can be approached differently depending on a child’s age, experience, and willingness to talk. A short activity may work better for an early learner; an older child may benefit from a specific tip sheet or a discussion about a real app they use.

- Younger children: Try a short video or activity, then ask what they would do in a simple situation. Stay with them while they use the material if it raises questions.
- Family conversations: Use a checklist or guided activity to talk through a shared rule, such as what information should stay private or when to ask an adult for help.
- Tweens and teens: Choose topic-specific material on issues relevant to their online life, such as social media, gaming, privacy, or cyberbullying. Invite them to discuss how a rule would work in practice.
These are starting points, not fixed age rules. A child’s prior exposure, development, and comfort with the subject matter can matter as much as a listed age or grade.

After a resource prompts a conversation, connect it to a small number of actions at home. UNICEF’s online privacy checklist recommends keeping devices updated, reviewing privacy settings and app permissions, and considering controls for content, screen time, and purchases. It also points to family practices such as strong passwords and multifactor authentication where available.
