Choose the setup route that matches what you want to control

Set basic parental controls on the console
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll to Parental Controls and choose Set Up Parental Controls.
- To continue without the app, press X, then choose Next.
- Choose a preset restriction level or custom settings. Options include restricting software by age rating and limiting communication with other users. The rating organization defaults to the one for your region.
- Choose Next, create a PIN of 4 to 8 digits, enter it again to confirm, and choose OK.
Keep the PIN private: it is used to change or bypass restrictions. Nintendo says restrictions activate once the console connects online. Most controls apply system-wide, not separately to each player, so choose settings with the youngest person who uses the console in mind. Nintendo’s Switch 2 setup instructions cover the console setup route.

Link the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app
- Install Nintendo Switch Parental Controls from the App Store or Google Play on an iOS or Android device.
- Use the prompts in the app and on the console to link the system. A parent or guardian aged 18 or older needs a Nintendo Account, and an internet connection is required.
- In the app, open Parental Controls and choose the settings you want to configure.

In the linked app, you can set a daily play-time limit, choose bedtime and morning start settings, review game-play history, and receive notifications. Limits can vary by day; Nintendo lists a maximum daily limit of six hours.

- Choose what happens at the limit: You can have the console display an alert or suspend the software when the limit is reached.
- Account for bedtime: If both a play-time limit and bedtime are enabled, whichever is reached first takes effect.
- Allow selected games: The app supports exceptions for selected games, which is useful when a general restriction would block a game you have approved.
Nintendo’s app update history lists version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026, as adding shared parental controls so two guardians can use their own devices to monitor activity and set limits: app update history.
Manage eShop spending and content separately
Console restrictions and the app do not replace Nintendo Account controls for eShop purchases or content visibility. To restrict spending or what can be viewed in the eShop, use the relevant Nintendo Account settings. Account-level settings also cover friend suggestions and some information sharing with third parties. A console PIN alone should not be treated as a purchase restriction. Nintendo explains these controls in its Nintendo Account parental controls guidance.

Configure GameChat for a child or supervised user
Nintendo says children under 16 and supervised users need the parental-controls app linked to use GameChat, and a parent must configure GameChat-specific controls. Parents can approve friends for chats and approve video-chat requests per session. A compatible USB-C camera is needed for GameChat video features, but it is optional and not needed to set up parental controls. See Nintendo’s GameChat parental-control information.
