For play-time limits, activity reports, or a selected-game allow list, use Nintendo’s free Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Most restrictions apply to the whole console, so they can affect other users and games too.
Choose the right parental-control route

Nintendo’s setup guide covers console and app controls. These are not separate control profiles for each player: Nintendo says play-time limits apply to all users on the console. The app can show activity by user, although games that do not prompt players to select a profile may report combined play time.

Set a restriction level on the Switch
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll to Parental Controls, then select Parental Controls Settings.
- If you are setting controls without the phone app, press X, then select Next.
- Select Restriction Level.
- Choose an age-based preset or Custom Settings, adjust the available options, and save.
The age thresholds and labels depend on the software-rating organization and region selected on the system. Choose the settings that fit your household rather than assuming a single age label applies everywhere.
Use the app for time limits and activity
Nintendo describes the app as offering the most restriction options. Download it through Nintendo’s links to the iOS App Store or Google Play Store, link it to the Switch system, then select Parental Controls in the app.

Set daily limits or a bedtime
The app supports daily play-time limits of up to six hours, different limits for different days, and bedtime controls. You can choose whether gameplay is suspended when time expires or the console only displays a notification. If both a daily limit and bedtime are enabled, whichever is reached first applies. Consult the app’s current settings for the available bedtime and morning-start ranges; those options can change.
Check device and account requirements
Nintendo’s FAQ says app use requires an internet connection, a supported smart device, and a Nintendo Account belonging to someone aged 18 or older. The FAQ lists iOS 16.0 or later and Android 8.0 or later; check Nintendo’s current FAQ before setup because supported operating-system versions may change. The app is free to download.

Share oversight with another guardian
Nintendo Support lists version 2.6.0 of the app, released September 14, 2026, as adding shared controls for two parents or guardians. Each can use their own device and app to review activity and set play-time limits. See Nintendo’s app update history for the current version and features.

Allow a specific game without removing its time limit
If a game is blocked by the software restriction, Nintendo lets you add selected games to an allow list so they can be played without entering the parental-controls PIN. An allowed game remains subject to the daily play-time limit. This is useful when a particular title is suitable for your child but the system’s broader restriction level would otherwise block it.

Set communication restrictions carefully
Nintendo’s setup guide allows communication and user-generated-content restrictions to be applied across software or, where supported, to individual software. The title “Super Mario” alone does not identify a particular game’s rating, online functions, or communication options. Check the regional listing and settings for the exact game before deciding which restriction is relevant; do not assume that every Super Mario release has the same features.

- They are generally console-wide. A restriction or play-time limit can affect everyone who uses that Switch, not only one child or one Super Mario title.
- Activity reports may not always separate players. The app can show activity by user, but some games may combine play time when they do not ask users to choose a profile.
- Account restrictions are separate. Use Nintendo Account settings for eShop and other account-level controls rather than expecting them in the console restriction screen.
Nintendo’s support material also discusses Switch 2. Its Switch 2-specific features are not needed to configure parental controls for a Nintendo Switch console.
