Check the exact console model and the exact edition of the Mario game before buying or inserting it. For Nintendo Switch, Switch OLED, and Switch Lite, use the game’s packaging or Nintendo eShop/product listing to check supported play modes; on Switch Lite, the key requirement for playing without extra controllers is handheld-mode support. If you have a Nintendo Switch 2, check Nintendo’s separate, title-specific compatibility information—compatibility with the original Switch family does not guarantee flawless operation on Switch 2.
1. Identify your console and the game edition
“Nintendo Switch” may refer to the original Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, or Switch 2. Check the console’s label or system settings, then identify the game’s platform and edition. You are looking for a Nintendo Switch edition—not simply a Mario cartridge or disc from an older Nintendo system. Nintendo’s Switch family page identifies the current systems and Switch games.

2. Check play-mode support for Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite
For a Nintendo Switch-family game, find its supported play modes on the game packaging, its Nintendo.com game details page, or its Nintendo eShop listing. Nintendo Support identifies all three as places to check. The listing needs to match the specific edition you plan to play.

Nintendo’s play-mode guidance lists TV, tabletop, and handheld modes for Switch and Switch OLED. Nintendo says Switch OLED works with the full Switch game library, though Nintendo Labo fit can be an exception and some games may look different on the OLED screen. Check Nintendo’s console comparison page and play-mode compatibility FAQ for the relevant details.

Switch Lite
Switch Lite is designed for handheld play and does not support TV mode. Look specifically for handheld-mode support if you want to play the game directly on the console. Nintendo Support says, “Nintendo Switch Lite can play any game that supports handheld mode, which are the vast majority of Nintendo Switch titles.” That is Nintendo’s qualitative description, not a percentage or a guarantee about every Mario game.
A game that does not support handheld mode may still be usable with compatible wireless controllers and additional setup, but it will not be a straightforward standalone handheld experience. Check the game listing and Nintendo’s support FAQ before relying on that option.

3. Check Switch 2 compatibility separately
If your console is Nintendo Switch 2, use Nintendo’s Switch 2 compatibility information to check the exact Switch game. Nintendo says compatible physical and digital Switch games can run on Switch 2, but some software may not be supported or fully compatible. Compatibility status and behavior can change as Nintendo tests games and issues updates, so consult the current listing for the title rather than assuming a Switch play-mode check settles the question.

4. Treat Mario examples as examples, not a franchise-wide guarantee
Nintendo identifies Super Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe as games compatible with Switch Lite, and lists Super Mario Bros. Wonder as a Nintendo Switch game. These examples can help you recognize the kind of information to look for, but they do not establish compatibility for every Mario title or every console model. 5. Check how classic Mario games are offered
An older Mario game may be available through a Nintendo Classics library rather than as a cartridge made for the original system. Those are different ways to play: do not assume an old cartridge will work in a Switch. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Classics support information to see which libraries are offered and what membership is required for the library containing the game.

- Identify whether your console is Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, or Switch 2.
- Confirm that the game edition is for Nintendo Switch; do not infer compatibility from the Mario name or an older Nintendo cartridge.
- For Switch, Switch OLED, or Switch Lite, inspect the supported play modes on the packaging, Nintendo.com game details, or eShop listing.
- For Switch Lite standalone play, confirm handheld-mode support. If it is absent, verify the controller and setup requirements before counting on the game being playable.
- For Switch 2, look up the exact title in Nintendo’s current compatibility information.
- For a classic game, confirm it is available through a Nintendo Classics library and check that library’s membership requirement.
