To control who can speak with your child in Fortnite, open the child’s Parental Controls and set Epic Voice Chat Permission to Nobody, Friends Only, Friends, team members, & connections, or Everybody. The available choices may be limited by the child’s age. Also check the console or device’s own family communication settings: Epic voice restrictions do not necessarily turn off the platform’s separate chat system.
Set the Epic voice-chat permission

Sign in to the child’s account in the Epic Account Portal, then open Parental Controls. Epic says these controls can also be modified from Fortnite.

Enter the Parental Controls PIN if prompted. Under Social Permissions, find Epic Voice Chat Permission.

Choose the level that fits your family:
- Nobody: Disables Epic voice chat.
- Friends Only: Allows chat with Epic and platform friends.
- Friends, team members, & connections: Adds the player’s team and connections. Team sizes can vary by Fortnite experience.
- Everybody: Allows chat with everyone.

Review the platform’s family and communication settings as well. Epic notes that a child may still be able to use a console’s built-in chat when Epic voice chat is turned off. Epic links to platform settings for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, Windows, iOS, and Google Play.

Check age and account eligibility
Epic limits the maximum voice and text chat permission according to age: children under 10 are capped at Friends Only, while children under 13 are capped at Friends, team members, & connections. As a result, a parent may not see every option; do not assume the age-based cap can be overridden. See Epic’s Parental Controls guidance.
If the account is a Cabined Account, voice and free-text chat are unavailable until a parent or guardian gives consent and completes account setup. If the control is unavailable, check the consent flow before troubleshooting the headset or microphone. Epic explains Cabined Accounts in its Verifiable Parental Consent FAQ.

Understand the voice options and reporting
The parental permission controls who the child can reach through Epic voice chat. Fortnite also has separate Party Chat and Game Chat options: Party Chat connects the Epic party across Epic apps, while Game Chat connects players in the same island instance when supported. A player may be able to change general communication options unless parental controls restrict them. See Epic’s guide to party, voice chat, and text chat options.

Epic says reporting is always on for players under 18 when voice chat is on. If Fortnite voice chat still does not work

In Parental Controls, confirm Epic Voice Chat Permission is not set to Nobody, and verify that the account is not still Cabined.

Check Fortnite’s own communication options. Epic’s support pages describe controls under the profile and Settings > Communication; the in-game route for voice chat settings is also documented under Settings > Audio. Options can be restricted by parental controls. See Epic’s communication-options guide and its voice-chat settings guide.

On Xbox or PlayStation, leave the console’s Party Chat if you want to use Fortnite voice chat. Epic says Fortnite chat requires leaving Xbox or PlayStation Party Chat, even if nobody else is in that party.

On Xbox, check family-member communication settings and cross-network communication controls. For console-specific steps, use the platform’s current family-settings guidance, since routes and labels can vary or change. Epic’s voice-chat troubleshooting guide covers console party chat and Xbox communication settings.
