You can get a repository’s tests, lint, formatting, and type checks to run overnight with a scheduled GitHub Actions workflow. That produces repeatable automated feedback—not a human code review or proof that a change is correct. Start with checks your project already runs, then consider AI review only after confirming its eligibility, data access, and cost.
Choose the overnight result you actually need
For a solo repository, a useful morning result is a workflow report showing which checks passed or failed. You can also run the same checks when you push or open a pull request, so problems surface sooner. A schedule is an additional trigger, not a different kind of review.

Keep the merge decision with a person. A passing test suite cannot establish that a change is secure, maintainable, or correct in cases the tests do not cover. Treat any AI-generated review comment as a hypothesis to verify against the code and project requirements; do not configure unattended auto-merge as a substitute for judgment.

- Confirm the local commands. Run the checks on your machine and note the exact commands, required runtime version, and any environment variables or services they need.
- Create a GitHub Actions workflow. In the repository, add a workflow file under
.github/workflows/. Configure it for the events you want—such as pushes and pull requests—and, if useful, a scheduled run. The workflow should check out the repository, install the project’s runtime and dependencies, and execute your existing commands. - Keep permissions narrow. Grant only the repository permissions the checks require. A workflow that merely tests code generally should not need write access to repository contents. Do not expose secrets to code or tools that do not need them.
- Inspect the first run. Check the Actions run log for failures in setup, dependency installation, or the checks themselves. Fix configuration problems before relying on a morning result.
- Add checks selectively. Introduce one additional check at a time, especially if it requires credentials, external services, or a separate security product. Verify what it scans and where its results are stored.
This is a setup outline, not a universal workflow file: the correct runtime, dependency setup, permissions, schedule syntax, and commands depend on your project. Adapt them to your stack rather than copying a configuration that assumes a particular language or build system.
Budget GitHub Actions before relying on nightly runs
Scheduling a workflow does not make its compute free in every repository. GitHub’s current billing documentation says standard GitHub-hosted runner usage is free for public repositories. For private-repository usage on GitHub Free, the published included allowance is 2,000 hosted-runner minutes per month and 500 MB of artifact storage; usage beyond included amounts is billed. These are GitHub-published plan limits, not a guarantee that every workflow feature or third-party service has no charge. Check GitHub Actions billing for current terms; plan limits can change.

Know what an AI review adds—and what it can cost
AI review is a separate layer from deterministic checks. Tests and linters execute project-defined rules; an AI reviewer generates suggestions that still need human verification. GitHub documents two metered components for Copilot code review: AI credits for the model interaction and Actions minutes for agentic capabilities. Copilot Free does not include code review, and enabling reviews for users without a plan that includes the feature can result in AI credits billed to the organization. See GitHub’s Copilot code-review documentation and Copilot plan details for current eligibility and terms.

Copilot cloud-agent automations can be scheduled, but a scheduled run is not automatically free. GitHub states: “Each time an automation runs, it starts a Copilot cloud agent session that uses GitHub Actions minutes and GitHub AI Credits.” The automation documentation also notes that sessions and logs are visible to repository users. Review access and data handling before enabling an agent, and do not put secrets in prompts. Details are in GitHub’s Copilot automations documentation.
For public repositories, CodeRabbit says its service offers free reviews, while its cloud Agent has separate per-minute billing after applicable trial and free minutes. This is an optional third-party offer, not a requirement for an overnight pipeline; confirm current eligibility and terms on CodeRabbit’s pricing page before relying on it. A free review offer does not establish that every related agent feature is free.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Choose triggers and review access deliberately
| Choice | What it does | What to account for |
|---|---|---|
| Scheduled run | Runs checks or an enabled agent at a chosen time, so a report may be ready in the morning. | It consumes whatever runner minutes or AI credits apply. A schedule does not remove metering. |
| Push or pull-request run | Runs checks when code changes, giving feedback closer to the change. | More frequent events can mean more workflow runs and higher usage. |
| Public repository | Standard GitHub-hosted runner usage is free under GitHub’s stated public-repository policy; some third-party services also publish public-repository offers. | Check each provider’s current eligibility and terms. Public code and workflow output may be visible beyond you. |
| Private repository on GitHub Free | GitHub currently lists 2,000 hosted-runner minutes per month and 500 MB artifact storage as included usage. | Usage above the included allowance is billed. Other services, including AI review, can have separate charges. |
Before adding an AI reviewer or cloud agent, verify that your plan includes the feature, identify which account or organization pays for usage, review what repository data and logs users can see, and set a budget ceiling or disable the feature if you cannot control its cost. Keep credentials out of prompts and avoid granting an agent broader permissions than its task requires.
Quick Recap
Make the morning report useful
- Separate setup failures from actual lint, test, or type-check failures; they require different fixes.
- Make failures actionable by preserving clear command output and linking the report to the commit it checked.
- Use artifacts only when you need them, and remember that private-repository artifact storage has a finite included allowance on GitHub Free.
- For AI comments, reproduce the claimed issue, inspect the relevant code path, and test any proposed fix before accepting it.
- Review the billing page and provider terms periodically because quotas, plan entitlements, and vendor offers can change.
