First choose where the Unity game will run
Steam Frame supports PC streaming as well as standalone play, but these are different execution paths. In the streaming setup, the game runs on the PC and its VR view is sent to the headset. Valve describes Steam Frame as a SteamOS device with a Snapdragon 8 Series processor and ARM64 architecture, but the reviewed product information does not provide a Unity-specific native build target, runtime, packaging process, or deployment recipe. Valve’s Steam Frame page also points developers to its developer-kit program.

The steps below cover the documented PC-streaming path. Unity’s general OpenXR support across devices and platforms does not, by itself, confirm that a standard Unity OpenXR build can run natively on Steam Frame.

Use the build target you intend to run on the PC; do not select an assumed Steam Frame-native target for this streaming setup. Unity’s XR Plug-in Management controls XR provider plug-ins by build target. The exact available providers and settings depend on your installed Unity version and project packages.

- In Unity, open Edit > Project Settings > XR Plug-in Management. If XR Plug-in Management is not installed, add it through Package Manager.
- Select the tab for the PC build target you plan to use.
- Enable the OpenXR provider if it is available and appropriate for that target. Review its settings and any project validation messages.
- Add the XR packages and scene components your game requires, then build for the selected PC target.
Unity’s XR provider documentation explains provider selection and target configuration. Its XR project setup guide covers packages and scene setup. These manuals describe Unity workflows generally, not Steam Frame native certification.
Set SteamVR as the PC’s OpenXR runtime
Valve’s documented procedure sets the active runtime in SteamVR on the PC. Exit the game first, then:

- Launch SteamVR.
- Open Settings and select OpenXR.
- Click Set SteamVR as OpenXR Runtime.
- Confirm that Current OpenXR Runtime shows SteamVR.
- Restart the game.
Valve lists these steps in its SteamVR display troubleshooting guidance. Menu labels can differ between SteamVR versions.

Start the Unity game through the PC’s SteamVR and Steam Frame streaming route. Check that the application appears in the headset, tracking responds, and controller input works. Treat this as a practical check for your project and connection: Valve describes PC streaming and SteamVR catalog compatibility, but that does not guarantee every Unity application or custom input binding will work.

If the game launches on the PC but does not display on the VR device, confirm that SteamVR is the current OpenXR runtime, restart the game after changing the runtime, and check that you launched the build configured for the intended PC target. Valve’s troubleshooting page is specifically about PC SteamVR display issues; it does not establish a Steam Frame-specific fix for every failure.

Do not infer a native deployment workflow from the device’s ARM64 hardware or Unity’s broad OpenXR platform support. Before building for standalone use, obtain current Steam Frame developer documentation or developer-kit guidance from Valve and verify the supported Unity version, target architecture, OpenXR runtime, packaging and signing requirements, and input configuration. The reviewed Valve and Unity documentation does not specify those Steam Frame-specific details.
