Start with one soft key light placed slightly off to one side of your camera and just above eye level, aimed at your face. Watch the camera preview as you adjust it. Add a reflector or a weaker fill light only if the shadows are still distracting; a backlight is optional.
Start by checking the light you already have
Before buying a light, look at the image from your actual webcam or camera. Room lighting, daylight, and even a bright background can affect how your face appears on stream.

- Turn off or reduce harsh overhead lighting if it creates strong shadows beneath your eyes or nose.
- Check how daylight and existing lamps fall across your face and background at the time you normally stream.
- Adjust your desk or camera position before adding more fixtures. If the face is too dark or uneven, add a soft key light near the camera.
Use a window carefully
A large window can work as a key or fill light. If possible, place your desk perpendicular to it rather than directly facing it or sitting with it behind you. Curtains or blinds help control the light, which changes with weather and time of day. Test the setup during your usual streaming hours; a position that looks good in daylight may not work after sunset.

Place and adjust the key light
The key light is the main light on your face. A useful starting point is to put it near the camera, a little to one side and slightly above eye level, then aim it toward your face. Ikan’s production guide describes a roughly 45-degree key-light position; treat that as a starting point, not a fixed rule for every desk or face.

- Set the light just outside the camera frame, near the camera’s height or slightly higher.
- Move it somewhat to one side rather than placing it directly in front of you. Check the preview for the direction and strength of the shadows.
- Use a diffuser or soft panel if the light looks harsh. If you do not have one, bounce the light from a neutral wall or use a white reflector or foam board to spread or return light.
- Adjust the light’s position and brightness until your face is clear and evenly exposed without glare, distracting shadows, or a washed-out background.
Do not judge the result only by how bright the room looks. Check the camera preview: camera auto exposure or gain may brighten a dim image while also making it noisier. Improve the light reaching your face before relying on camera gain.
Decide whether you need fill or a backlight
Fill light: soften the shadows
If the key light leaves one side of your face too dark, add a weaker, broader light on the opposite side. A reflector or white foam board can bounce some of the key light back onto your face without requiring a second powered fixture. Keep fill weaker than the key so it softens contrast rather than flattening the image.

Backlight: separate yourself from the background
A third light behind and above you can add an edge of light around your hair or shoulders and help separate you from the background. It is optional; add it only if that separation helps your particular framing.

Choose a light that fits your space

You do not need three fixtures to make a small office work. A single well-placed key light, a bounce, or a reflector may be enough. The sources here do not establish a universally best light model or a tested product ranking, so choose by softness, adjustability, color control, mounting, and the framing you want.

Keep color consistent and check the finished image
Different sources can make parts of the image look like different colors. Try to keep the key light and other white light sources consistent in appearance. If your camera supports manual white balance, set it to suit the key light. When mixing a light with daylight, match the artificial source to the dominant window light as conditions allow.
- Check your face, background, glasses, and reflective objects in the camera preview.
- Look for glare, a bright or blown-out window, strong downward shadows, and color shifts.
- Recheck the image if daylight changes or you turn on another room lamp.
- If the image is dark and noisy, add or reposition light before increasing camera gain.
