If you have the original Oculus Rift (Rift CV1), keep the headset on a USB 3.0 port: Meta specifies at least two USB 3.0 ports for the system. For tracking sensors, however, an additional sensor can use USB 2.0. When tracking is unreliable, check sensor placement and USB-controller sharing, then try moving one sensor to USB 2.0 or a separate controller.
First, identify which Rift you have
This guidance is for the original Rift, also called Rift CV1, which tracks movement using external sensors. Rift S uses inside-out tracking and does not need those external sensors. Meta’s Rift hardware specifications distinguish the two systems.

For the original Rift, Meta lists a minimum of two USB 3.0 ports. It also says additional tracking sensors are allowed on USB 2.0. That exception applies to sensors; it does not mean the headset itself can be connected to a USB 2.0-only PC.

Set up the original Rift and its sensors
- Check the PC’s ports. Confirm it has at least two USB 3.0 ports for the original Rift setup. Use USB 3.0 for the headset.
- Connect and configure the hardware in the Oculus PC software. Follow the setup prompts currently displayed in the app to configure the headset and sensors. Meta’s Rift setup guide directs users to complete Rift Setup before SDK setup; app screens may differ from older instructions.
- Place the sensors for your configuration. The archived Oculus Support guide dated June 13, 2019 recommends the following distances:
| Configuration | Archived placement guidance |
|---|---|
| Two sensors | Place them 3 to 6.5 feet (1 to 2 meters) in front of the wearer. |
| Three sensors | Place the front pair 3 to 9 feet (1 to 2.7 meters) in front of the wearer. Put the rear sensor directly opposite one front sensor and no more than 14 feet (4.3 meters) from the farthest front sensor. |
These are the archived guide’s recommendations, not independently tested measurements. For either arrangement, point each sensor’s glossy lens side toward the play area, remove its protective film, angle widely separated sensors toward the center, and keep the view between the wearer and sensors unobstructed. See the archived Oculus Support sensor troubleshooting guide.

Fix unreliable sensor tracking
Work through these changes one at a time so you can tell which one helps. The Oculus Support guide recommends updating Rift and USB drivers and trying another USB 3.0 port. If multiple sensors are connected to USB 3.0, it specifically suggests trying one sensor on USB 2.0.
- Update the Rift and USB drivers, then try a different USB 3.0 port for the affected device.
- If more than one sensor is on USB 3.0, move one additional sensor to a USB 2.0 port and check tracking again. The headset should remain on USB 3.0.
- If the sensors share one USB controller, distribute them across separate controllers where possible. A different physical port is useful only if it connects through a different controller.
- Temporarily unplug other USB devices, such as webcams or microphones, and see whether tracking improves. Reconnect them afterward one at a time.
Meta-hosted Rift release notes also advise against connecting more than two sensors to a single USB 3 controller; suggested alternatives include USB 2.0 for a sensor or another USB 3 controller. The practical issue is not simply whether a port is labeled USB 3.0: multiple devices can share controller resources.

If the PC does not have enough USB 3.0 ports
On a desktop PC, a USB 3.0 PCIe expansion card may add ports, but compatibility depends on the card and computer. No particular card or chipset is verified here. Check the card’s compatibility with your PC and the original Rift before buying, and do not assume that an added port necessarily provides a separate controller.
Meta’s 2015 “Powering the Rift” article describes historical PC requirements; it should not be treated as a current general-purpose PC specification. For this setup, the relevant published minimum is the two USB 3.0 ports listed in Meta’s hardware specifications.
