To set up Slack notifications, open your profile menu and go to Preferences > Notifications on desktop, or tap your profile picture and choose Notifications on mobile. Turn on the delivery methods you want, choose which activity should alert you, and then adjust schedules, channel exceptions, or keywords to control what gets through.
Open Slack’s notification settings
On desktop
- Click your profile picture.
- Choose Preferences, then Notifications.
- Enable or disable desktop and mobile notifications as needed. Slack’s notification configuration guide documents these controls.
On mobile
- Tap your profile picture.
- Tap Notifications.
- Turn on mobile notifications and choose the notification scope you want.
Available controls and their names can vary by platform; Slack’s guide has separate instructions for desktop and mobile.

Choose which activity triggers an alert
Slack offers two main notification scopes:
- Everything gives you broader coverage of message activity.
- Mentions and direct messages limits the default alerts to direct messages and mentions.
If you choose the narrower scope, you can still add exceptions for specific channels or direct messages. Open the conversation’s notification settings to tailor alerts for that channel or group DM. See Slack’s guide to managing notifications for specific channels and direct messages.

Keywords can alert you when a channel message contains a term you want to watch for. In your notification preferences, add the words or phrases you want Slack to flag. Matching is not case-sensitive, but it must be an exact match: a related word or different spelling will not count. Slack also notes that a keyword in a thread you are not following will not trigger an alert. The notification configuration guide explains the keyword controls.

Set hours when notifications are allowed
Use a notification schedule if you want Slack to pause alerts at predictable times. Slack lets you choose every day, weekdays, or custom days and hours; notifications pause outside the schedule you select. To change it, open your notification preferences and find the notification schedule controls. See Pause your Slack notifications for the schedule options and behavior.
Adjust mobile timing and alert appearance
Mobile settings include options for when notifications are delivered, as well as sound, message previews, and badges. The exact controls depend on your device and platform. Consult the relevant platform section of Slack’s configuration guide to adjust these options.
If Slack notifications do not arrive
- Check whether notifications are paused, including whether the current time falls outside your notification schedule.
- Confirm the relevant delivery method is enabled in Slack’s notification preferences.
- Check your device’s system notification settings to make sure Slack is allowed to send alerts.
- If you use Slack on mobile, open its Troubleshoot Notifications diagnostic. If the issue continues, use that flow to send Slack a report.
