For play-time limits, bedtime settings, and activity reports, use Nintendo’s free Parental Controls app. eShop purchase restrictions are managed separately through the parent’s Nintendo Account.
Choose the right setup route
| Route | What it covers | What you need to know |
|---|---|---|
| On the console | Age-rated software and communication restrictions | Works without a smart device; it does not provide the app’s time limits or activity reports. |
| Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app | Play-time limits, bedtime controls, activity history, selected-game exceptions, and Switch 2 GameChat management | Requires a compatible iOS or Android device, an internet connection, and a Nintendo Account belonging to a parent or guardian aged 18 or older. |
| Parent’s Nintendo Account settings | eShop viewing and purchasing restrictions and other account-level controls | Managed separately from the console’s parental-controls menu. |
Most parental-control settings apply to the whole console, not to one child’s user profile. Set the general restrictions with the youngest child who uses the system in mind. Switch 2 GameChat controls are an exception: they are configured for each user.

Set basic restrictions on the console
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll down to Parental Controls and select Set Up Parental Controls.
- When asked whether to use the smart-device app, choose the console setup if you want basic restrictions without a phone.
- Choose a preset restriction level or select custom settings. Set the software age-rating limit and communication restrictions to suit the child. Rating organizations and rating scales vary by region, so use the local rating system shown on your console.
- Save the settings and create a four-to-eight-digit PIN. Enter it again to confirm.
The PIN is needed to change or bypass restrictions. Keep it private from the child and somewhere the responsible adult can retrieve it; avoid exposing it while entering it in front of them. Nintendo’s app offers additional options, including gameplay history, play-time controls, and allowing individually selected games through an otherwise restricted software setting. Nintendo’s setup instructions explain the console and app options.
Add play-time and bedtime controls with the app
Nintendo says the Parental Controls app is free for iOS and Android; data fees may apply. To get it, Nintendo directs users to p.nintendo.com on a smart device, which sends them to the appropriate app store. A parent or guardian aged 18 or older needs a Nintendo Account, and an internet connection is required. Nintendo’s app overview describes the available controls.
#1 Best Overall
- The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
- One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
- Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
- Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
- GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play
- Install the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app on the smart device.
- Sign in with the adult parent or guardian’s Nintendo Account and follow the app’s instructions to link the console.
- Open Parental Controls in the app and set daily play-time limits. You can use different limits on different days.
- Set a bedtime and, where offered, a morning start time. Choose whether the console should suspend play when time is up or simply show a notification while allowing play to continue.
If both a daily play-time limit and bedtime restriction are set, the earlier limit takes effect. Activity history in the app can help you review gameplay, but these settings do not replace checking in with your child about how they use the console.
Set eShop and online communication restrictions separately
Restrict eShop purchases
eShop viewing and purchase restrictions are controlled through the parent’s Nintendo Account settings rather than the console’s core parental-controls menu. See Nintendo’s Nintendo Account parental-controls guidance for account-level options.

Manage communication and friends
Console communication restrictions can limit chatting and other communication. On Switch 2, GameChat settings are managed through the app; parents can approve which friends a child may chat with and approve video-chat requests. These controls describe specific settings Nintendo provides, not a guarantee that every online interaction is prevented.

Switch 2 supports on-console setup for age-rating and communication restrictions. The app adds play-time controls, activity history, and GameChat management. Nintendo says children under 16 and supervised users need the app-linked additional controls to use GameChat. Because GameChat settings are set per user while most other parental controls are system-wide, check each relevant user’s GameChat settings in the app.

Nintendo Support version 2.6.0, released September 14, 2026, added shared parental controls so two parents or guardians can monitor a child’s game system together. App menus and features can change with updates, so the current Nintendo instructions are the best reference if a label differs from the steps above.
