Which camera brand and model do you use, and which app controls it? The setting may be called a Motion Zone, Activity Zone, or Detection Zone, and the menu path varies by device. In general, draw a zone around the approach or property area you want alerts for, then check alert categories and notification settings separately. Zones can reduce nuisance alerts, but they do not necessarily stop recording outside the boundary.
What a motion detection zone changes—and what it may not
A motion or activity zone marks part of the camera’s view for motion detection, alerts, or event handling. The effect beyond that boundary depends on the camera, app, and storage setup.

- Google Nest: Google says Activity Zones do not change the footage the camera streams or records; they help make notifications more useful for motion in selected areas. Google’s Activity Zones guidance explains the feature.
- Arlo: Activity Zones can affect which videos appear in the Feed and which notifications are sent, depending on Modes and Rules. Arlo says local storage saves all videos regardless of the zone. See Arlo’s Activity Zones guide.
- Ring: Motion Zones are intended to focus detection on areas that matter and reduce unwanted alerts. The cited Ring guidance does not establish that all recording outside a zone stops.
So, do not treat an activity zone as a universal recording boundary. If you need to conceal part of the image in live view or recordings, look for a separate privacy-zone control. Arlo distinguishes Privacy Zones—which conceal parts of the image—from Activity Zones, which it recommends for reducing unwanted recordings and notifications. Arlo’s Privacy Zones guide describes that distinction.
How to draw a useful zone
- Identify the camera and app. Note the exact model and open its manufacturer’s app. Feature support and menus can vary by device, country, firmware, app version, and service plan.
- Find the zone control. Look under the camera’s Motion, Activity, or Detection settings. For Ring, the documented route is Ring app > Devices > select device > Device Settings > Motion Settings > Edit Zones. For Arlo Secure, the guide describes Devices > gear icon > Zones > Activity > plus sign. Google Nest manages Activity Zones in Nest or Google Home camera controls; the available route depends on the device and app.
- Include the area people should cross. Draw around the door, driveway, gate, or approach you want to monitor. Leave enough space that someone cannot reach the access point without entering the zone.
- Exclude likely nuisance areas. If they are outside the area you need to monitor, keep busy streets, sidewalks, moving foliage, reflective surfaces, and areas affected by shadows or sunlight outside the boundary.
- Save, then check alerts separately. Review notification categories, camera modes, rules, and notification preferences; the zone boundary and alert subscriptions may be separate controls.
In Ring’s editor, drag the zone’s boundary points and save. In Arlo’s described flow, drag anchor points, move the zone as needed, and save. Exact controls can differ across models.

Adjust the setup when unwanted alerts continue
Check alert categories and rules
A zone may be drawn correctly while the camera still sends alerts for a motion category you do not want. Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking Activity Zones and turning off People and All other motion alerts for an unwanted zone. Google’s troubleshooting steps cover those settings. Account for movement and changing light
Ring identifies moving trees, sunlight, reflections, and shadows as possible sources of unwanted alerts. Its suggested responses include changing the zone, trimming branches, or repositioning the camera. A zone that excludes a nuisance area may still catch movement at its edge, so adjust the boundary or camera angle if alerts persist.

Consider distance and object size
Ring says its standard maximum detection range is 30 feet, but notes that larger distant objects, such as vehicles, can still trigger an alert. That figure is Ring-specific and should not be applied to other brands or models. Ring’s Motion Zones guidance explains its range caveat.
Review the result in representative conditions
After saving, observe alerts in daylight and at night, or under other conditions when the camera is typically used. If the camera still flags irrelevant movement, refine the zone, adjust the angle, and review category filters. No official percentage reduction is established in the cited materials, so a zone should be treated as a way to improve relevance—not a guarantee that false alerts will disappear.

When a zone is not enough
If you cannot find a zone setting, confirm that the exact camera model supports it and check the manufacturer’s instructions for your app and firmware. Some Arlo models support different numbers of zones and anchor points, and Auto Zoom and Tracking can affect zones on compatible cameras. If you need part of the image hidden rather than merely excluded from alerts, investigate privacy zones instead. Do not assume that either setting changes every recording behavior; check how your camera handles cloud and local storage.
