YouTube’s built-in membership alert appears in live chat: when someone joins during your stream, chat shows a bright green “New Member” message and pins the member’s profile picture at the top of chat for five minutes. It is not a graphic over the video. To put an alert box on the broadcast itself, you need a separate overlay tool—and should confirm that tool’s current YouTube compatibility and reconnection behavior before relying on it for a continuous stream.
Choose what you mean by a membership alert
There are three separate YouTube features that are easy to confuse. The native new-member event is a chat message; members-only chat controls who can write in chat; members-only visibility controls who can watch. You do not need to enable members-only chat or restrict the stream to members to receive YouTube’s native “New Member” message. Use YouTube’s built-in new-member alert
For the native alert, there is no separate alert graphic to install in your encoder. YouTube documents the alert as a live-chat event: a bright green “New Member” message when a viewer joins during a live stream, with that person’s profile picture pinned at the top of chat for five minutes. The message is in chat, not automatically composited into the video seen by viewers.
If you want to confirm the behavior in your workflow, open the stream’s live chat in YouTube’s Live Control Room and keep the chat visible to the people monitoring the broadcast. The documented behavior is the chat message and temporary profile pin; it does not establish how a particular encoder or third-party tool will display or forward that event.

Set members-only chat without hiding a public stream
Use this setting if you want the public to watch but want only members to participate in live chat. YouTube’s instructions are for a computer in YouTube Studio:
- Sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Click Create, then Go live.
- Select Stream, then create a stream or reuse a prior stream’s settings.
- Open the stream settings.
- Under Live chat, select Enable members-only chat.
- Click Save.
This restricts who can post; it does not make the live video members-only. Viewers who are not members can still watch the public stream. The native new-member message is a separate behavior.

Make the stream itself members-only
If the goal is to restrict viewing, create a live stream in YouTube Studio and set its visibility to All paid members or choose the membership level that may watch. YouTube says live-stream access requires a verified channel and no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days.
You can also change an already-live public stream to members-only from Live Control Room. YouTube currently limits this transition to desktop streams that are not vertical. The transition creates separate public and members-only segments; eligible members continue into the exclusive segment, while nonmembers are prompted to join or upgrade. Check YouTube’s current members-only stream requirements before planning a transition.

When you need an alert graphic over the video
A chat message is not the same as an on-screen alert box. A separate overlay typically depends on an external service or custom integration that can receive membership events and render a graphic in the video output. YouTube identifies the Live Chat API and the Channel Memberships API as integration surfaces, but these are building blocks—not a turnkey, always-on alert overlay recipe.
The official material does not establish which overlay provider currently works for your setup, how it handles an extended session, or whether it recovers after a connection interruption. Before adding one to a continuous broadcast, check the provider’s current YouTube integration instructions and test the complete path: a membership event, its display in the live output, and recovery after the overlay or encoder reconnects. Do not assume an alert will persist or recover simply because a provider supports YouTube.

Keep access, alert display, and notifications separate
- Access: Choose public visibility, members-only chat, or members-only viewing according to the audience you want.
- Creator-facing alert: YouTube’s documented native event appears in live chat. A video-overlay graphic requires a separate integration.
- Member notifications: YouTube may notify members about members-only content, including when a members-only stream starts or is scheduled to begin in 30 minutes. Those are notifications to viewers, not an on-screen alert in your stream output. See YouTube’s members-only content guidance.
Plan for an always-on broadcast
YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, which means the broadcast depends on an encoder session and its operating setup. A long-running stream also needs a plan for interruptions and for any separate alert service to reconnect. The YouTube guidance cited here does not specify an uptime level or a recovery procedure for third-party overlays, so verify these details with the encoder and alert provider you choose. Avoid treating the native chat event as an encoder-side graphic or as proof that an external overlay will remain connected.
