One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can make OBS start streaming when Windows launches by adding --startstreaming to its shortcut and placing it in the Startup folder, or by configuring a startup task. That can recover from some PC restarts, but it is not a universal crash-recovery system: OBS may be running while the source or YouTube feed has failed, and a rebooted PC may reach the network before the router does. Test each failure you need to recover from.
First identify what actually stopped
“OBS is open” and “the YouTube stream is live” are different states. Before setting up automatic restarts, identify which part failed; the right recovery depends on it.
- OBS exited or crashed: A Windows startup shortcut or scheduled task can launch it after sign-in or reboot. It does not, by itself, establish a continuously running crash watchdog.
- OBS is open, but a media or camera source stopped: Restarting OBS might help in a particular setup, but the source needs separate diagnosis.
- OBS is open, but YouTube is no longer receiving video: A running OBS process is not proof that viewers are receiving a live feed. One OBS forum user reported this symptom during a 24/7 stream; it is anecdotal, not evidence of how often it happens or what caused it. OBS forum thread.
- The first connection after reboot failed: OBS and Windows may be ready before the router or other network equipment. A delay or network-readiness check may be needed before launching or retrying OBS.
- YouTube ended the broadcast: Check the event’s status and settings in YouTube Studio. Restarting OBS does not guarantee that the same event can be resumed.
Set OBS to start streaming when Windows starts
This Windows method comes from an OBS community reply dated June 6, 2024, concerning a Windows 11 24/7 camera stream. It is practical guidance, not an official guarantee for every OBS version or configuration. Use an unlisted test event before relying on it unattended. Read the OBS forum reply.
Option 1: Startup folder for a straightforward login launch
- Find the OBS shortcut you use to open the correct profile and scene collection. If you do not have a shortcut, create one pointing to the OBS executable.
- Right-click the shortcut and choose Properties. In the Target field, leave the existing executable path intact, add a space after it, and append
--startstreaming. The target should end with the argument, for example:"C:Program Filesobs-studiobin64bitobs64.exe" --startstreaming. Your installation path may differ. - Apply the change, then put the shortcut in the Windows Startup folder so OBS launches when that user signs in. Press
Win+R, entershell:startup, and press Enter to open the current user’s Startup folder; copy or move the shortcut there. - Sign out and back in, or restart the PC, and verify that OBS opens the intended profile and begins streaming to the intended YouTube event.
This method runs at user sign-in. If you need reboot-related behavior before a user signs in, or more control over launch conditions, use Task Scheduler instead and test the exact configuration on the machine.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option 2: Task Scheduler for more control
- Open Task Scheduler from the Windows Start menu and choose Create Task.
- On General, name the task and choose the account and sign-in behavior appropriate for the PC. OBS may need the same user context that has its profiles and scene collections.
- On Triggers, add a trigger such as At startup or At log on, depending on when OBS should launch.
- On Actions, choose Start a program. Set the program to the OBS executable and put
--startstreamingin the arguments field, rather than appending it to the executable path. - Save the task, restart the PC, and verify the result in OBS and YouTube Studio. Task Scheduler settings and Windows account permissions can affect whether the program opens as expected.
Handle network delays after a power failure
A PC can start before the router, modem, or internet connection is ready. The cited OBS community reply warns that auto-reconnect may not work when the initial connection attempt fails. A fixed delay can help only if it is long enough for your equipment; it does not prove that internet access is available.
- For a simple setup, configure a tested delay before OBS launches, then verify the stream after a full power-cycle test.
- For a more robust setup, use a script or task logic that checks connectivity before launching OBS or retrying it. Confirm that the check tests a useful destination and that failure leads to another attempt.
- Test with the network unavailable at startup, then restore it and confirm that OBS actually connects to the intended YouTube event.
Check whether YouTube will keep the event resumable
YouTube’s encoder controls include auto-start and auto-stop. Auto-start and auto-stop let the encoder start or stop the broadcast; reusing stream settings also copies those choices. Review the current event settings in YouTube Studio rather than assuming an OBS restart will revive the same broadcast. YouTube Help: stream settings and stream keys.

An OBS community guide says that disabling auto-stop on a scheduled broadcast can allow a later encoder reconnection to continue that event. It also warns that a broadcast may eventually end after multiple hours without incoming video. The guide was last updated October 8, 2021, so its interface descriptions may be stale; confirm current labels and behavior in YouTube Studio. OBS community guide to a first live stream.
A YouTube stream key is the credential and destination information the encoder uses to send the feed. Keep it private. If it is exposed, YouTube Help describes resetting it in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Do not put the key in a public script, screenshot, or shared task configuration.

Test each failure before leaving the stream unattended
Do not treat a successful normal launch as proof that automatic recovery works. Use an unlisted broadcast where possible, and test the conditions relevant to your setup one at a time.
- Launch OBS normally and verify that the intended scene, media source, stream key, and YouTube event are correct.
- Restart Windows and confirm that the Startup shortcut or scheduled task launches OBS and starts the intended stream.
- Test a failed initial connection by making the network unavailable at launch, then restoring it. Confirm whether your delay or retry method reconnects.
- Test OBS process termination separately from source loss. Check whether OBS relaunches and whether the source resumes.
- Check YouTube Studio after each test. Confirm that viewers would receive the expected live feed and that the broadcast event remains active or resumable.
- Review OBS logs and the YouTube event status when a test fails; record what happened rather than assuming a particular setting guarantees recovery.
Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS does not open after reboot | Shortcut location, Task Scheduler trigger, Windows account context, or executable path. | Run the shortcut or task manually, check its target and arguments, then test again after sign-in or restart. |
| OBS opens but does not start streaming | Missing or misplaced --startstreaming, incorrect profile, unavailable network, or YouTube event state. |
Check the shortcut target or task arguments, confirm the selected OBS profile, then inspect the event in YouTube Studio. |
| OBS starts before the internet is ready | Router or network recovery is slower than Windows startup. | Use a tested delay or a connectivity-aware retry; do not assume a fixed wait proves internet access. |
| OBS says it is streaming, but YouTube is not receiving video | Connection or broadcast state; an active OBS process alone does not confirm delivery. | Check YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and OBS logs. Verify whether the event is still active and whether the encoder is connected. |
| The camera or media is frozen while OBS remains open | Source or media playback, not necessarily the OBS process. | Inspect the source and its playback or capture status. Test source recovery separately from process relaunch. |
| OBS reconnects, but the old YouTube event is over | Broadcast lifecycle settings or the event’s status. | Review auto-stop and auto-start for the scheduled event and confirm current status in YouTube Studio. A new event may be needed if the original has ended. |
When a different architecture makes sense
If you are streaming an RTSP camera and are comfortable maintaining Linux services, the independent YouTube AutoEncoder project documents an FFmpeg pipeline under systemd for Debian, Raspberry Pi OS, and other small Linux hosts. It is a separate architecture, not an OBS plugin or a one-click OBS fix; check its current maintenance, security, and compatibility before adopting it. YouTube AutoEncoder project.
