How to Set Up Matter Devices in Samsung SmartThings

What you need, the exact steps to add a Matter device in SmartThings, how Thread differs from Wi-Fi, and how to fix failed pairing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a Matter device to SmartThings, put the device in pairing mode. Then open the app, tap Add (+), then Add Device, and scan the device’s Matter QR code. If scanning fails, enter the setup code instead. Choose a hub and room, pick a network if the app asks, and save. The steps below cover what to prepare first, how Thread differs from Wi-Fi, and what to check when pairing fails.

What you need before you start

SmartThings splits Matter setup into two roles, and knowing them explains most requirements. The commissioner adds the device during onboarding, and the phone running the SmartThings app does this job. The controller then controls the device afterward (SmartThings Support).

Phone and app

  • Android: SmartThings app version 1.7.91 or higher.
  • iOS: iOS 16.2 or higher, with SmartThings app version 1.6.94 or higher.

These are the thresholds in SmartThings’ support article, published January 19, 2023. Newer app versions are the safer choice, so update the app first.

Controller (hub)

SmartThings lists the SmartThings 2018 Hub (IM6001-V3P01) and the Aeotec Smart Home Hub as Samsung Matter-controller examples. The article says these need firmware 45.9 or higher. The SmartThings 2015 Hub handles Matter devices that use Wi-Fi/LAN, but it has no Thread router.

  • Automations That Work for You: Create custom routines for security, lighting, comfort, and energy savings. Many local automations continue working even if your internet goes offline
  • Wide Device Compatibility: Connect compatible smart devices from Aeotec and many other brands to build a unified system for lighting, voice control, energy management, and climate settings

The device itself

Look for the Matter badge and a QR code on the device or its packaging. The QR code contains an 11- or 21-digit setup code, which you can type in if the camera can’t read the QR code. SmartThings says some devices made before Matter may gain support through a firmware update, but that depends on the device. Check with the manufacturer.

Wi-Fi/LAN devices versus Thread devices

Not every Matter device needs Thread. The requirements differ by transport:

  • Monitor and control compatible devices in your home using a single smartphone app for your phone
  • Automate connected devices in your home and set them to turn on or off when doors are opened, people come and go, and much more
  • Works with a wide range of smartphone compatible products
Device type What it needs
Wi-Fi/LAN A supported Matter controller on your network. The 2015 Hub works for these.
Thread A controller with Thread Border Router capability. A 2015 Hub needs a third-party border router.

Using a third-party Thread Border Router with a 2015 Hub

  • The border router and the hub must be on the same Wi-Fi/LAN.
  • During onboarding, select the Thread network when prompted.
  • Enter the 32-character Thread Network Key. It may be printed on the border router or shown in the app you used to set it up.

Setting up the border router depends on its manufacturer, so follow its own instructions.

Step-by-step setup

  1. Put the device in pairing mode, following the manufacturer’s instructions. SmartThings may show a notification when it detects a device in pairing mode, and that notification can start onboarding.
  2. Open SmartThings and tap Add (+), then Add Device.
  3. Scan the device’s Matter QR code. If that isn’t possible, choose the option to enter the setup code. The app may also let you pick a brand and device before scanning.
  4. Select the hub and the room.
  5. Wait for the connection. If asked, select the Wi-Fi or Thread network.
  6. Rename the device and save.

Keep the QR code or setup code within reach during pairing. Screens can differ between devices, so the manufacturer’s guide takes priority where it disagrees with the steps above.

If setup fails

Onboarding doesn’t complete

  • Confirm you have a compatible Matter controller.
  • Make sure the QR code is visible to the camera, or use the setup code.
  • Check that the device is in pairing mode and within range of both your phone and the controller.
  • Reset the device per the manufacturer’s instructions, then restart the SmartThings app and try again.

No hub or network option appears

Check that the controller is online.

Weak signal or “incompatible network” warning

  • For a weak signal, move the network equipment closer.
  • For an incompatibility warning, check whether the device supports the Wi-Fi frequency (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and the security type your network uses.
  • Restarting the device and the controller is also worth trying.

A paired device goes offline

  • Check range and obstructions.
  • Power-cycle the device and the controller, and restart SmartThings.
  • Check the power supply or battery.
  • If none of that works, remove the device and add it again.

These steps come from SmartThings’ guidance. They are not our own test results.

Sharing a device with another app (multi-admin)

A Matter device connected to SmartThings can also be shared with another supported service, and it stays connected in SmartThings. Install and set up the other service’s app first. Then:

  1. Open the device in SmartThings and go to the More menu.
  2. Choose Share with other services, then Share device.
  3. Scan the QR code the app generates, or enter its setup code, in the other service.

This generated code is separate from the QR code printed on the device. A Matter device can connect to five services. If it is already at that limit, remove one service before sharing again.
