How to Set Up MAC Address Filtering on Your Router

Set up a router’s MAC allow or block list safely, account for private Wi-Fi addresses, and understand why MAC filtering is not strong security on its own.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To set up MAC address filtering, sign in to your router’s app or web interface, find its access-control or wireless-filtering settings, choose whether to allow or block listed devices, add the device’s current Wi-Fi MAC address, and save. Menu names and rule behavior vary by router, model, and firmware, so confirm the instructions for your exact device before applying an allow-only rule.

Before you change the setting

Have the router’s administration credentials ready and identify the MAC address the device currently uses on the Wi-Fi network you want to manage. If possible, administer the router over Ethernet or keep another trusted connection available. A mistaken allow-only rule can cut off the device you are using to manage the router; ASUS documents administration over wired or Wi-Fi connections, but behavior differs by model.

MAC filtering is a router-side list that allows or denies devices based on their MAC addresses. A MAC address is a device network identifier; it is not a Wi-Fi password or an encryption setting.

Generic setup steps

  1. Open the router’s administration interface. Sign in using the router’s app or web interface. Use the manufacturer’s instructions for your model if you do not know how to reach it.
  2. Find the filtering or access-control page. Look for labels such as MAC Filtering, Wireless MAC Filter, or Access Control. If prompted, select the Wi-Fi network, profile, or band to which the rule should apply.
  3. Choose the intended policy. Select an allow/accept list to admit listed devices, or a block/reject list to deny listed devices. Read the router’s own description: implementations can differ in which clients or networks a rule affects.
  4. Add the device’s current Wi-Fi MAC address. Some router interfaces let you pick a connected client; others require you to enter its address. Make sure you use the address the device presents on that particular Wi-Fi network.
  5. Save or apply the change, then test it. Check that the intended device connects or is denied as expected, and that other devices still have the access you want. With an allow-only policy, first make sure the administrator’s device is on the allowed list.

Allow list or block list?

Policy Intended effect What to check
Allow/accept list Permits listed devices and, on implementations that apply the rule network-wide, excludes devices not on the list. Confirm which network, band, or profile it controls, and include the device you use to administer the router if it needs access.
Block/reject list Denies the listed devices while leaving other devices unaffected by that list. Confirm the rule blocks the intended device and does not unintentionally apply to another band or network.

Manufacturers use different labels for similar choices: TP-Link uses Block List and Allow List; ASUS uses Reject and Accept; Linksys describes denying listed addresses or allowing only listed addresses. Treat these terms as examples, not universal labels.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

Examples of manufacturer menu paths

These are examples from specific vendor guides, not instructions to transfer unchanged to another router. Use your model’s own manual or support page.

  • TP-Link: For the CR1900 V1, Archer CR500 V1, and Archer CR700 V2 covered by its guide, the path is Advanced > Wireless 2.4G or Wireless 5G > MAC Filtering. Select the interface, enable filtering, choose a list type, add the address, and save. See TP-Link’s guide and check the support page for the exact model and hardware version.
  • NETGEAR: In the documented web interface, open ADVANCED > Security > Access Control, turn Access Control on, choose a rule, and apply. NETGEAR says to allow the computer or device being used if it should retain access. Its “Block all new devices” rule applies to devices joining after the setting is applied; where relevant, the allowed list needs both Ethernet and Wi-Fi MAC addresses. See NETGEAR’s Access Control instructions.
  • ASUS: Available choices and steps depend on model and firmware. Newer supported firmware uses a main network profile and Accept, Reject, or Disable; older firmware may show Wireless > Wireless MAC Filter. The guide includes app and web-interface workflows. See ASUS’s Wireless MAC Filter instructions.
  • Linksys: In the Smart WiFi interface covered by its guide, open Wireless > MAC Filtering, enable filtering, then choose to deny listed addresses or allow only listed addresses. Linksys says enabling MAC filtering disables WPS on these routers. See Linksys’s instructions for the covered interface.

Use the MAC address the device presents on that network

The address printed on a device or shown in another network context may not be the address it uses for a particular Wi-Fi network. Some Apple devices use a different, private MAC address for each Wi-Fi network, so an allow-list entry can fail if it contains the wrong address. Check the device’s Wi-Fi details for the network in question and use the address shown there. Apple explains private Wi-Fi addresses in its guidance on recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

If the setting is missing or a device loses access

  • You cannot find the menu: Labels and available features depend on the router model and firmware. Check the exact model’s manual or support page; NETGEAR recommends updating firmware and consulting the manual if Access Control is absent.
  • An allowed device cannot connect: Verify that you entered the MAC address currently used for that Wi-Fi network, that the rule covers the correct band or profile, and that the device is actually on the allow list.
  • You lose access after enabling an allow-only policy: Use a separate trusted connection or the router maker’s documented recovery procedure to regain administration access, then correct the list. Avoid changing an allow-only setting while relying on the same device unless you have confirmed it is included.
  • A blocked device still appears to connect: Recheck the selected policy and network scope, then verify which MAC address the device is using. Router behavior can differ, including whether a rule concerns existing clients or new connections.

What MAC filtering can—and cannot—do

MAC filtering can be a convenient basic way to manage access on a home router, but it is not dependable protection against a determined intruder. Apple recommends setting MAC filtering, authentication, or access control to Disabled as a security recommendation, noting that MAC addresses can be copied, spoofed, or changed. Filtering also does not encrypt Wi-Fi traffic or stop network observers from monitoring or intercepting it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a strong Wi-Fi password and the strongest security mode supported by your router and devices, following current router and platform guidance. Apple’s router guidance also discourages open or unsecured Wi-Fi because it disables authentication and encryption. MAC filtering should not be treated as a substitute for those protections.
