How to Set Up Local Multiplayer in Nintendo Switch Sports

Choose Play Locally for same-console matches, or follow Nintendo’s wired LAN Play steps to connect multiple consoles in the same room.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play together on one console, start Nintendo Switch Sports and choose Play Locally; then select a sport and follow its on-screen prompts for players and controllers. If you mean playing on several Switch consoles in the same room, use the separate wired LAN Play setup instead.

Play together on one Nintendo Switch

  1. Start Nintendo Switch Sports.
  2. Choose Play Locally.
  3. Select a sport, then follow the on-screen prompts to set the player count and controller arrangement.
  4. Pass or assign compatible Joy-Con as prompted, then begin the match.

The options are sport-specific, so there is no single player limit or controller setup that applies to every sport. For example, Nintendo’s Soccer practice route is Play Locally → Soccer → One Player → Free Practice. Bowling allows players to bowl simultaneously, while other modes may prompt players to take turns passing a Joy-Con. Nintendo’s product page describes same-system play in 1v1, 2v2, or free-for-all formats where supported: Nintendo Switch Sports product page.

Check controllers and console mode

Supported controller configurations vary by sport and can include paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, or Joy-Con with the Soccer Leg Strap. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers and Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controllers are not compatible. The game does not support Handheld Mode; Nintendo recommends TV Mode on Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch OLED Model, or Nintendo Switch 2 for the best experience. See Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.

Use the Soccer Leg Strap (optional)

The Leg Strap is only for Soccer’s leg-kicking mode and is not required for ordinary local play. On the Joy-Con holding screen in Play Locally or Play with Friends, press + to switch Soccer to Leg-Strap Mode. Nintendo says the strap included with the physical version of the game and the Ring Fit Adventure Leg Strap can be used; Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. Details appear in the Nintendo beginner guide and Nintendo FAQ.

Connect multiple consoles with LAN Play

For same-room play across several consoles, Nintendo’s LAN Play setup supports up to four consoles and up to two players per console (up to eight total); the number who can play simultaneously depends on the sport. Each participating console needs the game, a dock, an Ethernet cable, and a television. Use a LAN adapter if the dock has no LAN port. Connect all consoles by Ethernet to the same shared wired router; a network switch can provide additional ports if needed.

  1. On each console, start the game and highlight Play with Friends.
  2. Hold L, R, and click the Left Stick at the same time to reveal LAN Play.
  3. Select LAN Play, choose Single Player or Two Players, then choose the participating user.
  4. On one console, choose Make a New Room. On each other console, choose Join Room.
  5. When everyone has joined, the host selects Play with this group! and continues through the on-screen sport selection.

Nintendo’s instructions include dock and adapter details for Switch, Switch OLED, Switch Lite, and Switch 2 variants. Check the Nintendo LAN Play instructions for the setup specific to your console.

Does local multiplayer require Nintendo Switch Online?

Nintendo identifies a Nintendo Switch Online membership as a requirement for online play, not for same-console Play Locally. Without a membership, choosing Play Globally provides only a trial competition against computer opponents, according to the Nintendo Switch Sports FAQ.
