How to Set Up Jellyfin Remote Access Safely

Choose between a private VPN and a public HTTPS reverse proxy, then configure Jellyfin's network and user permissions without exposing its application ports directly.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Jellyfin access from outside your home, choose either a private VPN or a public HTTPS reverse proxy. A VPN keeps Jellyfin off the public internet but requires the VPN app on every client. A reverse proxy gives clients a public domain without joining a VPN, but requires correct DNS, firewall, TLS, and proxy configuration. Do not make direct port forwarding to Jellyfin the default: the Jellyfin project’s networking guide says it is not recommended.

Choose a private VPN or a public HTTPS address

Remote access means a device outside your home network needs a route to your Jellyfin server. Jellyfin lists several approaches, including a reverse proxy, VPN, VPS reverse proxy, or public address and DNS. The two practical choices for most home users are a private VPN or a reverse proxy that terminates HTTPS. The right option depends on who needs access and what devices they use.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Consideration Public HTTPS reverse proxy Private VPN
Public inbound access Usually requires TCP ports 80 and 443 to reach the proxy at your home network. Direct Tailscale access avoids router changes and a public IP; it is designed for situations such as carrier-grade NAT or when opening ports is undesirable.
Client setup Clients connect to a public domain; they do not need to join a VPN. Install and join the VPN on the server and every client that needs access.
Domain and certificate Requires DNS pointing to your public endpoint and a trusted HTTPS certificate. Jellyfin recommends handling TLS at a separate reverse proxy. Direct Tailscale access uses the server’s Tailscale IP and Jellyfin port; a public domain and certificate are not necessary for that route.
TVs and unmanaged devices Often easier when a client cannot install VPN software, because it can reach the public domain. Can be awkward or unavailable on devices that cannot install or use the VPN app.
Configuration and upkeep More network and proxy details to maintain: DNS, firewall rules, TLS, forwarded headers, and WebSockets. Requires managing the VPN network and its membership; Jellyfin notes that restricting communication between devices in a Tailscale network can require additional complex configuration.

Pick a reverse proxy for broad client compatibility

Use a public reverse proxy when family members or devices need to connect with an ordinary server URL and cannot first join your private network. Jellyfin recommends HTTPS for public access and says its documented reverse-proxy approach is preferable to exposing the application ports directly. Its documentation recommends Caddy as the easiest documented proxy option, though other supported proxy setups are possible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Pick a VPN for access limited to your devices or group

A VPN is a good fit when only your own devices or a controlled set of people need access and installing an app on each client is acceptable. Jellyfin documents Tailscale as a way to connect without a public IP or router port changes. This convenience has a client-side cost: each device must join the tailnet. For a server and clients on Tailscale, connect to the server’s Tailscale IP and Jellyfin port. Review Tailscale’s network controls if clients should not be able to reach one another.

Consider a VPS reverse proxy only if your home endpoint cannot be reached

A VPS-based reverse proxy is an advanced alternative when your home network cannot accept inbound connections. It adds a separately hosted endpoint and extra routing and administration, so it is not the simplest starting point for a typical home setup.

Set up a public reverse proxy without exposing Jellyfin directly

This outline assumes you control a domain and your router or firewall can direct inbound traffic to a proxy running on your network. The proxy forwards requests to Jellyfin’s local HTTP listener; HTTPS ends at the proxy. Adjust addresses and firewall details for your actual host, container, and router layout.

  1. Give the server a stable local address. Reserve or otherwise keep consistent the local IP address of the machine running the proxy, so router rules continue to target the right device.
  2. Point DNS to your public endpoint. Create the domain’s A record for your public IPv4 address and, if you use IPv6, its AAAA record for the public IPv6 address. Confirm that the records resolve to the intended endpoint.
  3. Install and configure a reverse proxy. Direct the proxy to Jellyfin’s local HTTP service, commonly 127.0.0.1:8096 when both services share a host. If they run in separate containers or machines, use the address reachable from the proxy instead.
  4. Forward only the proxy’s public web ports. Configure the router and any host firewall to pass TCP 80 and TCP 443 to the proxy. Jellyfin’s Caddy guide also identifies UDP 443 for HTTP/3; it is not required for ordinary HTTPS over TCP. Do not forward Jellyfin’s application ports directly from the internet.
  5. Use a trusted certificate. Configure the proxy to serve HTTPS with a certificate trusted by client devices. Jellyfin strongly discourages self-signed certificates for this public-access setup and recommends TLS termination at a separate reverse proxy.
  6. Tell Jellyfin which proxy is trusted. In Jellyfin, open Dashboard > Networking > Known Proxies and add the actual IP address or addresses of the proxy. Do not add arbitrary client or internet addresses.
  7. Check access controls. Set Jellyfin’s local-network CIDR ranges, global remote-access option, and each user’s remote-connection permission to match who should connect. These restrictions depend on Jellyfin correctly recognizing the proxy through Known Proxies.
  8. Test from outside your home. Use a device on cellular data or another external network to open the HTTPS domain, sign in as an account that should have remote access, and confirm playback and live server functions work.

Minimal Caddy configuration

With public DNS already pointing to the host and the required ports reaching Caddy, Jellyfin’s documented minimal Caddyfile pattern is:

reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:8096
}

Replace example.com with your own domain and change the upstream address if Jellyfin is not reachable at 127.0.0.1:8096 from Caddy. Caddy can obtain and renew HTTPS certificates when the domain and network prerequisites are met. Its command-line equivalent is caddy reverse-proxy --from example.com --to 127.0.0.1:8096; binding to ports 80 and 443 may require elevated privileges or suitable capabilities on your operating system. See the Jellyfin Caddy guide for the documented setup.

Configure proxy headers, WebSockets, and logs

When traffic passes through a proxy, Jellyfin otherwise sees the proxy’s IP as the connecting client. The Jellyfin project says to configure the proxy IP addresses under Known Proxies. With those trusted addresses configured, Jellyfin accepts forwarded client information such as X-Forwarded-For, X-Forwarded-Proto, and X-Forwarded-Host; it discards forwarded-for headers from unknown sources to reduce spoofing risk. The project explains this in its reverse-proxy documentation.

  • Trust only your proxy. Add the proxy’s actual address, not a broad network range unless you understand and intend that trust boundary. Incorrect trust can undermine client-IP-based access restrictions.
  • Pass WebSockets. Jellyfin uses WebSockets for various functions. Verify your selected proxy supports and forwards WebSocket connections; a login page working does not prove every live feature will work.
  • Protect request logs. Jellyfin requests can include authentication information in the URL, including an api_key parameter. Restrict access to proxy logs, avoid logging full request paths where possible, or redact sensitive parameters.

Restrict access and avoid accidental exposure

Remote access should be limited to the intended users and network paths. In Jellyfin’s Dashboard, review the settings under Networking and the permissions for each account under Users. Network CIDR ranges identify local networks; the global remote-access setting and each user’s remote-connection permission determine whether remote use is allowed. If a reverse proxy is involved, restrictions that rely on client IP information require the proxy to be correctly listed under Known Proxies.

USB4 delivers data, display, and power over one cable, while RS-232/RS-485 expansion supports PLCs, sensors, and industrial equipment. From your home desk to factory automation, the IT12 adapts to demanding work environments.
  • Do not expose ports 8096 or 8920 directly. Jellyfin’s default ports are 8096/TCP for HTTP and 8920/TCP for HTTPS, with the latter disabled by default. The project warns that opening a port directly to the internet is insecure and not recommended. Forward public web traffic to the proxy instead.
  • Do not substitute a self-signed certificate for trusted HTTPS. For a public URL, use a certificate trusted by clients and terminate TLS at the reverse proxy.
  • Disable automatic port mapping unless you specifically need it. In the setup wizard, automatic port mapping uses UPnP. Jellyfin recommends disabling this option unless required; leaving it enabled can create router mappings outside the explicit proxy plan.
  • Do not trust forwarded headers from arbitrary sources. Known Proxies should contain only the real proxy address or addresses.
  • Do not expose local discovery externally. UDP 7359 is used for client discovery on the local subnet; it does not provide discovery outside that subnet and should not be forwarded to the internet.

Jellyfin’s default ports and local network guidance are in its networking documentation; the setup wizard’s port-mapping recommendation appears in the Setup Wizard Walkthrough.

Use a VPN when you do not want public inbound ports

For the documented Tailscale route, install Tailscale on the Jellyfin server and every client, sign each into the same tailnet, then connect using the server’s Tailscale IP and Jellyfin’s port. The connection does not require a public IP or changes to router port forwarding. Jellyfin’s Tailscale guide also cautions that preventing tailnet clients from connecting to one another can require extra, complex configuration.

This is not a way to make a public URL available to arbitrary devices: a client must be able to run the VPN app and be admitted to the tailnet. It is therefore less convenient for many smart TVs or other unmanaged devices than a public HTTPS domain.

Troubleshoot a remote connection that fails

  • The domain does not open: Check that DNS A and AAAA records point to the current public address, then verify router forwarding and host firewalls allow the proxy to receive TCP 80 and 443. Check each network layer between the internet and proxy.
  • The browser reports a certificate problem: Confirm the certificate is trusted, valid for the domain being used, and being served by the proxy. Check that the public DNS and port reachability prerequisites for certificate issuance are satisfied.
  • Jellyfin reports the wrong client IP or remote restrictions behave unexpectedly: Confirm the proxy’s exact IP is present in Known Proxies and that the proxy passes the relevant forwarded headers. Do not resolve this by trusting all sources.
  • The page loads but some features hang or fail: Check the proxy’s WebSocket support and forwarding configuration.
  • A subpath URL behaves inconsistently: A path such as https://example.com/jellyfin is supported, but Jellyfin documents possible compatibility problems with HDHomeRun, DLNA, Sonarr, Radarr, and MrMC. Set the same Base URL in Jellyfin and the proxy path rules, then restart Jellyfin after changing Base URL. Some client apps do not follow redirects and may need the base path included in the server address.
  • Discovery does not find the server away from home: That is expected: UDP 7359 discovery works only on the local subnet. Enter the remote domain or VPN address in the client instead.

For most setups, a root-domain URL is simpler than a subpath. Jellyfin’s networking guide documents Base URL behavior and the listed compatibility caveats.
