Connect Fitbit Air to its charger, add it in Google Health, and keep it near your phone for automatic syncing. Here’s how to set it up and fix common sync issues.

To set up Google Fitbit Air, connect it to its charger, install or open the Google Health app, sign in with a Google Account, then add the tracker in the app. Keep the tracker near your phone: it syncs automatically over Bluetooth Low Energy, and you can also start a sync manually.

Before you begin: check your phone and app

Fitbit Air is Google’s screenless wearable tracker. It is not Fitbit Aria Air, which is a smart scale; use Google Health rather than an Aria Air setup guide.

  • Phone: Google lists Android 11.0 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer as minimum requirements on the Google Store Fitbit Air page.
  • Account: You need a Google Account to use the Google Health app with Fitbit Air.
  • App: Install Google Health, or open it if it is already on your phone. Google says you do not need to reinstall Google Health if the Fitbit app is already installed.
  • Tracker: Connect Fitbit Air to its charging cable before setup. The box includes the tracker, wristband, and charging cable.

How to sync Fitbit Air with your phone

Automatic syncing

Fitbit Air syncs with Google Health over Bluetooth Low Energy when it is near your phone. Google says data syncs automatically throughout the day and when you open Google Health while the tracker is nearby. The phone also needs an internet connection for the app to send its data onward.

Start a sync manually

  1. Bring Fitbit Air close to your phone and open Google Health.
  2. On the Today tab, pull down to refresh, or open Connections > Sync.
  3. To check when the tracker last synced, open Connections and select Fitbit Air. The last-sync time appears beneath the device image.

For details, see Google’s guide to how Fitbit devices sync their data.

What Fitbit Air’s status light means

  1. Bring the tracker closer and charge it. Put Fitbit Air on its charger and keep it near the phone.
  2. Check Bluetooth and internet access. Make sure Bluetooth is on and the phone has Wi-Fi or cellular data.
  3. Retry a manual sync. Open Google Health and pull down on Today, or use Connections > Sync. Check the last-sync time under Connections > Fitbit Air.
  4. On Android, check background restrictions. Battery Saver and Bedtime mode can limit background data connectivity. Turn them off, or interact with the device, then retry.
  5. Refresh Bluetooth. Turn Bluetooth off for three seconds, then turn it back on and try again.
  6. Restart both devices. Restart your phone and Fitbit Air, then retry setup or syncing.

Google’s full checklist is on its Google Health syncing troubleshooting page. Do not remove Fitbit Air from your account as an early troubleshooting step: Google warns that removing a Fitbit device deletes data that has not synced. Check the last-sync time first.
