To set up GameChat, update your Nintendo Switch 2, meet Nintendo’s account, internet, and membership requirements, then press the C Button and follow the setup prompts. You can invite only friends who have completed setup and approved you—and they must approve you in return.
What you need before setting up GameChat
- A Nintendo Switch 2 with the latest system update installed.
- A Nintendo Account signed in on the console and a phone number available for text-message verification.
- A persistent internet connection and a completed GameChat network connection test.
- A Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s open-access period ended March 31, 2026; service availability can vary by country. Check Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch Online information for your region.
- If the user is under 16, a parent or guardian must first set up the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app and approve GameChat use.
Nintendo’s GameChat FAQ says that a Nintendo Switch Online membership and persistent internet connection are required.

Set up GameChat for the first time
- Press the C Button on the right Joy-Con 2 or Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller to open GameChat, then follow the console’s prompts.
- Review and accept the GameChat terms when asked.
- Enter the text-message verification code sent to the phone number registered to your Nintendo Account. For a child under 16, Nintendo says the parent or guardian’s account phone number is used for verification messages.
- Select the friends you want to approve for GameChat. Each person must approve the other; choosing a friend on your console alone does not enable invitations.
- Complete the remaining setup prompts, including the network connection test.
Nintendo’s support guides describe the first-time setup and mutual friend approval.

- Press the C Button to open GameChat and start a room.
- Choose the approved friends you want to invite. Nintendo’s guide says only friends who have completed GameChat setup and approved you can be invited.
- Your friend receives an on-screen notification and can respond by pressing the C Button or the HOME button.
- To invite additional friends after the room has started, open GameChat settings in the room and select them, subject to the room limit.
Nintendo says network conditions and physical distance can delay invitations. If someone does not receive one, check that both people have finished setup, are friends, and have approved each other; then check the internet connection, system update, and membership.
