1. Check your receiver and speaker manuals
Before connecting anything, identify the exact receiver and speaker models. Manuals show the terminal layout, supported speaker impedance, and any setup menu or calibration procedure. Turn the receiver off before connecting or disconnecting speaker cables.

Impedance settings are model-specific. Begin with the left and right speakers facing the listening area and arranged symmetrically around the main seat. Aim for similar distances from each speaker to that seat. Play familiar music with centered vocals and steady bass. Make small changes to spacing or angle, listening from your usual seat after each change. Compare how stable the vocal center sounds and whether bass remains consistent; change one thing at a time. 3. Connect the speakers with matching polarity
- With the receiver powered off, connect its left speaker output to the left speaker and its right output to the right speaker.
- Match positive (+) to positive and negative (−) to negative at both the receiver and speaker ends. Use speaker wire suitable for your equipment and follow its manuals; the cited guidance does not establish a universal wire gauge, length, or connector.
- Check that no loose wire strands bridge terminals or touch the receiver chassis before powering up.

4. Set impedance only as your receiver specifies
Check the impedance rating of your speakers against the requirements in your receiver’s manual. If the receiver has an impedance selector or menu, set it exactly as that model’s instructions direct. If you cannot confirm a compatible setting, do not guess: consult both manuals or the manufacturers’ support resources.

Automatic room correction is optional and varies by model. When available, use the supplied microphone and follow the receiver’s on-screen prompts and manual, including its instructions about microphone position. Some systems measure speaker connections, distance, level, frequency, or phase; others may assess a different set of characteristics. Yamaha describes those measurements for the RX300A. For Audyssey on the Denon AVR-X3800H, the owner’s manual recommends six or more measurement positions, up to eight, with later positions within 60 cm of the main listening position. This is guidance for that receiver and calibration system—not a general rule for stereo receivers. After calibration, listen to a familiar track. If you adjust tone, balance, or placement, change only one setting at a time so you can compare the result.

Troubleshoot by symptom
Thin sound, weak bass, or an unstable vocal center
Power down and verify that positive and negative connections match at both ends of both speaker cables. Reversed polarity can produce thin sound, reduced bass, or a weak center image; Polk identifies these as possible symptoms for its Legend L800, not proof of a specific fault. A channel cuts out or the receiver enters protection
Turn the receiver off and inspect the terminals for loose strands or conductors touching each other. Denon warns that this can activate protection on the model covered by its connection manual; use your receiver’s own manual to identify its behavior and recovery procedure. The sound changes noticeably between seats
Check that the speakers are positioned symmetrically around the main listening position. If your receiver offers room correction, use its prescribed microphone procedure. A calibration centered on one listening position should not be assumed to optimize every seat unless the specific receiver’s documentation says so.
