Set up Nintendo DS emulation in three separate layers: map the handheld’s physical buttons, decide whether virtual controls should remain visible, and choose a two-screen layout that keeps the game’s important display readable. Then test touch input and save the arrangement at the scope your emulator supports. The exact menu names differ between DraStic, melonDS Android, desktop melonDS, and the Libretro melonDS DS core, so identify your emulator before following a path.
This guide covers those four configurations without assuming a particular handheld model, touchscreen technology, stylus, or emulator version. The cited documentation describes the settings, but it does not certify compatibility with any specific device.

Identify the emulator and handheld constraints first
Do not begin by copying a menu path from another app. Check the emulator name and whether it runs as a standalone Android application, a desktop program, or a Libretro core inside a frontend. The same terms—layout, hotkey, software input, or controller—can refer to different settings in each environment.

What to check on the handheld
- Which buttons, sticks, triggers, and shoulder controls are available for mapping.
- Whether the device has a touchscreen, and whether touches are registered accurately at the screen edges.
- Whether the display can rotate or switch between portrait and landscape orientation.
- Whether the physical controls can be pressed while touching the lower screen.
- Whether the device has enough screen area to show both DS screens at a readable size.
A capacitive stylus can be useful on a compatible touchscreen, but it is optional. Emulator documentation describes touch features; it does not guarantee that a particular stylus or handheld will work. Verify the device’s touchscreen type and the stylus manufacturer’s compatibility before buying one.

Record a recovery control before changing anything
Keep one physical button combination available for the emulator menu, layout switching, or pausing. In DraStic, hiding the menu button without assigning another way to open the fast-access menu can leave you unable to reach those controls, according to its settings guide.
Map physical buttons to Nintendo DS inputs
Hardware mapping and on-screen software controls are independent. You can assign a handheld button to a DS face button, hide the virtual overlay, and still retain touch input if the emulator and game require it.
melonDS Android: Settings → Input → Key mapping
- Open Settings in melonDS Android.
- Choose Input, then open Key mapping.
- Select each DS input shown by the app and press the physical handheld button you want to use.
- Assign the directional controls, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start, and Select as needed by the game. If your handheld has fewer buttons, leave rarely used functions for an on-screen control or a mapped hotkey.
- Back out of the settings and press every mapped button in a game, including both shoulder buttons and the directional control.
The melonDS Android settings documentation also exposes software-input layout management in the same Input area. Use it after the hardware mapping is working rather than treating the overlay as a replacement for the physical map. See the melonDS Android Settings documentation for the version-specific labels.

DraStic places global settings in Configure options or in its in-game Options area. Open the controller-related settings and assign the handheld’s buttons to the DS controls. DraStic also provides special functions that can be assigned to buttons, including screen swapping and layout switching. A dedicated swap button is useful for games that frequently alternate between the upper and lower screens.
After mapping, return to the game and verify that a button press produces the expected DS input. If you assign a button to a special function, check that it performs that function without stealing a control required by the game. The DraStic settings guide describes the available controller and function-button options.
Desktop melonDS: configure controls and hotkeys separately
Desktop melonDS treats game input and emulator hotkeys as related but separate configuration tasks. Use its input configuration for the DS buttons, then configure hotkeys for actions such as changing the screen arrangement or swapping screens. The desktop FAQ’s instructions apply to the desktop program; they are not Android navigation directions. Consult the melonDS Howto/FAQ for the current desktop labels.

Libretro melonDS DS: distinguish core options from frontend controls
When melonDS DS runs as a Libretro core, some options belong to the core and others belong to the frontend, such as RetroArch. Map the handheld’s buttons through the frontend’s controller configuration, then open the melonDS DS core options for layout behavior. If a hotkey is assigned in the frontend, confirm that it does not conflict with a game button. The Libretro melonDS DS documentation describes the core-specific layout and cycling options.

Hide the overlay when physical controls are sufficient
On melonDS Android, open Settings → Input and use the software-input layout and visibility controls. The documented Show soft input option lets you hide the on-screen controls when a physical controller covers the game’s needs. You can also choose a default software layout, create or edit layouts, change opacity, and adjust touch vibration. Hiding or reducing opacity gives the two DS screens more usable space and avoids tapping a virtual button accidentally.
Keep a software overlay visible if your handheld lacks a convenient button, if a game uses an unusual control, or if you need a touch target while testing. You can make it smaller or more transparent rather than removing it entirely.
DraStic: customize the virtual controller and preserve touch input
DraStic lets you customize its virtual controller independently of the physical mapping. Move, resize, or hide controls that are not useful on your device. Its documented option for making on-screen controller presses also activate DS touchscreen input is important for games that expect a stylus-like touch action while you are using buttons. Enable that behavior only after checking that ordinary button presses do not trigger unwanted touches in the game.
Touch input is not limited to a stylus. A finger can work on a large enough screen, while a compatible capacitive stylus may provide more precision. Neither the DraStic nor melonDS Android documentation certifies a particular handheld or accessory, so treat stylus support as a device-level question.

Keep a practical touch path for the lower screen
Some games use the lower DS screen for menus, drawing, map interaction, or continuous control. If you place that screen in a narrow strip or far from your natural grip, touch becomes difficult even when the buttons are perfectly mapped. Before hiding all virtual controls, perform the game’s main touch action repeatedly and confirm that you can reach the entire active area without covering the display.

Choose a two-screen arrangement
There is no universal best layout. A game with most information on the upper screen benefits from a large, readable upper display; a touch-heavy game may need the lower screen close to your thumb or stylus. Try several arrangements at the game’s normal viewing distance rather than choosing solely from a preview.
DraStic: Select Screen Layout and edit placement
- Open the game menu and choose Select Screen Layout.
- Choose a starting arrangement, then open the layout editor if the screens need repositioning.
- Select a screen and move it to the desired location. Edit the virtual controller separately so its buttons do not cover either display.
- Check the orientation rule: the guide states that landscape layout selection applies while the device is in landscape orientation, while portrait orientation uses the portrait layout automatically.
- Save the result globally for a general default or as a game-specific layout when one title needs a different arrangement.
Use the global save for a layout that works across most games. Use the per-game save when a title’s touch screen, portrait presentation, or information density demands a different balance.
melonDS desktop: Natural, horizontal, vertical, and Auto
The desktop FAQ documents four layout concepts: Natural, horizontal, vertical, and automatic. Natural follows the DS-style relationship between the screens; horizontal places them side by side; vertical stacks them; and automatic lets the program choose according to its layout logic. Configure the layout in desktop melonDS, then assign a hotkey if you want to change it during play. These names and paths should not be assumed to exist in melonDS Android.
Libretro melonDS DS: layout sequences and cycling
The melonDS DS core supports multiple layout choices, including sideways rotation, and can cycle through layouts with a configured Next Screen Layout function. First set the core’s layout sequence, then bind the next-layout action in the frontend’s controls if you want to switch during a game. Keep the core option and frontend hotkey distinct: changing a RetroArch menu binding does not necessarily change the core’s layout sequence.
A complete setup workflow
Use this order on any supported platform. Where a step names a menu, follow the platform-specific path above rather than assuming the same label in another emulator.
- Identify the platform and emulator. Write down whether you are using DraStic, melonDS Android, desktop melonDS, or the Libretro melonDS DS core. Note whether the display is currently portrait or landscape.
- Map the essential DS inputs. Assign the directional controls, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start, and Select where available. Leave one reliable button or combination for the emulator menu.
- Map optional emulator functions. Add screen swap, layout switching, pause, or fast-menu actions only after the game controls work. Avoid assigning a function over a button the game needs constantly.
- Choose an initial screen arrangement. Start with a readable two-screen view. Make the screen that carries the game’s primary action larger, while keeping enough of the other screen visible to avoid constant switching.
- Place or hide virtual controls. Hide the overlay when physical controls cover the game. Otherwise reduce its size or opacity and move it away from both DS screens.
- Verify touch behavior. Open a menu or activity that uses the lower screen. Touch each edge and corner, drag where required, and confirm that a button press does not create an unintended touch.
- Test layout and swap actions. Switch layouts or screens with the assigned hotkey. Confirm that the action works in gameplay and that you can return to the normal view.
- Save at the appropriate scope. Save globally if the arrangement is broadly useful. Save per game when a specific title needs a different screen size, orientation, or touch position.
Global versus per-game settings
DraStic explicitly supports both global and game-specific layout saves through its layout editor. A global layout is efficient when your library uses similar screen priorities. A game-specific layout prevents one title’s unusual touch or portrait needs from disrupting the default for every other game.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
For melonDS Android, desktop melonDS, and the Libretro core, persistence depends on the app or frontend and its version. Check whether a custom layout, software-input arrangement, or hotkey is saved globally, per profile, or only for the current session. Do not assume DraStic’s save behavior applies to another emulator.

Troubleshoot common setup failures
A button does nothing
Return to the emulator’s input screen and check whether the button was assigned to a DS input or accidentally to a layout function. Test the physical button outside the game if the handheld offers a controller diagnostic. On Libretro, inspect both the frontend mapping and the core’s expected input; a frontend binding alone cannot repair an incorrect core assignment.
The game receives an unwanted touch
Disable the setting that combines virtual-button presses with touchscreen input, or move the virtual overlay away from the active game area. On DraStic, test the documented combined-input option with a game menu before using it during normal play. On melonDS Android, hide software input temporarily to determine whether the overlay is the cause.
The lower screen is too small to use
Change from a layout that gives both screens equal but cramped space to one that prioritizes the active screen, or assign a screen-swap hotkey so you can enlarge the lower screen when needed. In DraStic, edit the screen positions and save that arrangement per game. In desktop melonDS or the Libretro core, try horizontal, vertical, automatic, or another configured sequence.
You cannot open the emulator menu
If you hid a menu button in DraStic without mapping a replacement, restore the default control configuration or use the emulator’s documented recovery method. Keep a dedicated menu or layout key in future profiles before removing any on-screen access.
A layout changes but does not persist
Check whether you changed a temporary session setting, a global profile, a game-specific profile, a core option, or a frontend option. DraStic distinguishes global and per-game saves. Other configurations may require an explicit save in the app or frontend, and the available behavior can vary by version.

Touch accuracy is poor
Test the touchscreen at all four corners and along the edges. Recalibrate the handheld using its own system tools if available, then retest in the emulator. A screen protector, digitizer type, or stylus designed for a different touchscreen can affect precision; emulator settings alone cannot establish accessory compatibility.
Game-oriented layout decisions
Button-heavy games
Give the upper screen most of the available area, keep the lower screen visible enough for status information, and hide or minimize virtual buttons once the physical mapping is reliable. A screen-swap hotkey is still useful for occasional menus.
Touch-heavy games
Keep the lower screen large and reachable. Leave a touch path unobstructed, retain a visible software control only if it provides a needed function, and test repeated taps, dragging, and edge selections before saving the profile.
Games that alternate screens frequently
Use a balanced two-screen arrangement and map a screen-swap or next-layout function. Practice switching without looking for the key so the transition does not interrupt play.
Portrait-oriented presentations
Check the emulator’s orientation rules before editing. DraStic’s guide states that its landscape selection applies in landscape mode and that portrait mode uses the portrait layout automatically. Save a separate game-specific arrangement if the title is uncomfortable in your normal handheld orientation.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- Every essential DS button produces the correct input.
- A menu, pause, or layout control remains reachable after virtual controls are hidden.
- Both screens are readable at the distance and orientation you actually use.
- The lower screen accepts the game’s required taps, drags, and edge touches.
- Screen swapping or layout cycling works without conflicting with a game button.
- The chosen arrangement is saved globally or per game as intended.
- Any stylus or touchscreen accessory has been verified for the handheld rather than assumed compatible.
