Back up the files you can still read immediately, then plan to replace the drive. A SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) failure is a manufacturer-defined warning of elevated failure risk, not a reliable countdown to the exact hour the disk will stop. A drive may continue to boot and may even pass some tests while a SMART failure remains significant.
If the drive is clicking, beeping, or not spinning, stop diagnostics. Disconnect it if practical and seek professional data-recovery advice before further attempts when the files matter.

First response: protect the data before testing anything
The safest order is backup first, diagnosis second. Long self-tests can add hours of operation to a deteriorating mechanism, while a failing drive can become inaccessible without warning.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Identify the affected physical drive. Read the warning carefully and match its model, serial number, or bay to the disk inside the computer. The alert may refer to a secondary data drive rather than the boot drive.
- Copy irreplaceable files to a different physical device or suitable backup destination. Start with documents, photographs, project files, credentials, and anything that cannot be downloaded or recreated. Copy rather than move, and keep the original untouched until the copy is checked.
- Keep the workload light. Avoid operating-system updates, disk cleanup, defragmentation, or large transfers unrelated to the backup. If a file repeatedly causes read errors, note its location and continue with other accessible data instead of repeatedly retrying it.
- Verify the backup. Open representative files from the destination and confirm that the copy contains the expected folders. A completed copy operation is not proof that every file is usable.
Western Digital’s support guidance says a SMART error is a signal to back up and replace the drive, and that a drive reporting SMART errors or failures should not be used for data storage. Seagate likewise advises backing up as soon as possible and maintaining consistent backups.

What a SMART failure actually tells you
SMART records health indicators inside a drive and can flag conditions associated with failure. Examples described by Seagate include read retries, slow spin-up, high temperature, and an excessive number of bad sectors. The warning is a risk signal, not a guaranteed schedule.
Do not convert the alert into a promise such as “the drive has 24 hours left.” Seagate notes that a drive can appear to function normally after reporting an error, and that some diagnostic tests can still pass. A passing test therefore does not erase a previous failure warning.
Attribute names, raw values, and thresholds are not universal. Western Digital explains that manufacturers define their own attributes and threshold values; Seagate says threshold details differ by manufacturer and drive design and are not publicly standardized. A raw counter that looks alarming in a generic monitoring program cannot, by itself, establish the same diagnosis for every brand or model. Interpret the status using the drive maker’s documentation and utility.

Match the warning to the right action

| Critical, predictive, or SMART failure reported by the manufacturer | Finish the backup as quickly as possible, then remove the drive from storage duty and arrange a compatible replacement. |
| The manufacturer’s diagnostic test fails | Treat the result as confirmation that the drive needs replacement. Preserve the test result for a warranty conversation. |
| SMART alert but the computer still works | Do not assume normal operation makes it safe. Prioritize copying data before optional troubleshooting. |
| Only an excessive-average-temperature warning | Inspect airflow and fans, correct ventilation, and check whether the warning clears. Persistent or unrelated SMART failures still require the normal backup-and-replace path. |
| Clicking, beeping, or no spin | Stop diagnostics. For important data, seek a professional recovery service before trying additional software or tests. |
How to back up a drive that is still readable
Prioritize by irreplaceability
Begin with data that has no second copy: personal records, original media, source code, active work, and application data that cannot be reinstalled. If the drive is unstable, a complete image may not finish; securing the most valuable files first gives you the best chance of preserving them.
Use a separate destination
The destination must be a different physical device or another suitable backup location. A second partition on the same failing disk does not protect against that disk’s failure. Ensure the destination has enough free capacity for the selected files and remains connected for the entire copy.
Handle read errors deliberately
If the operating system reports an unreadable file, do not spend the initial response window running repeated scans. Record which items failed, continue with accessible folders, and decide whether those remaining items justify professional recovery. Repeated mechanical noises or worsening access are reasons to stop rather than keep experimenting.

Keep the source available only as long as necessary
After verifying the backup, avoid normal day-to-day use of the suspect drive. Western Digital specifically advises against using a drive that has produced SMART errors or failures for data storage.
Recommended Free Tools
Run diagnostics only after the backup
Use the utility and instructions supplied for the drive’s manufacturer. Seagate identifies SeaTools as a tool that can test SMART parameters and other drive conditions. Western Digital describes short and extended self-tests. Names, menus, and test duration vary by model, so follow the current support instructions for the exact drive.
- Record the SMART alert, drive model, and any error code before starting.
- Open the manufacturer’s support page or diagnostic utility and select the physical drive identified in the warning.
- Run the manufacturer-recommended short test after the data is safe. A result of “pass” does not cancel a prior SMART failure; it only describes that test run.
- If the maker recommends an extended self-test, run it only when the data is backed up and the computer can remain powered for the required duration.
- Save the result or failure code. A failed manufacturer test is grounds to replace the drive, not an invitation to keep testing indefinitely.
Generic monitoring applications can be useful for viewing status, but their interpretation should not override the manufacturer’s thresholds. Do not “repair” a SMART failure by resetting counters or hiding the warning; that changes the display, not the drive’s condition.

When replacement is the correct outcome
Replace the drive when the manufacturer reports a critical or predictive failure, or when its diagnostic test fails. A warranty replacement supplies hardware; it does not recover files from the old disk, so complete the backup or recovery decision first.
Choose a compatible replacement
The available evidence does not establish a best model or current price. Select a drive only after checking the requirements of the computer or enclosure.

Severe physical symptoms: use the recovery path
Clicking, beeping, or a drive that never spins indicates a more serious physical symptom than a routine software warning. Seagate’s openSeaChest documentation advises stopping and contacting a professional recovery service before diagnostics in these cases. Each power cycle can change the condition of a mechanically damaged drive, so avoid repeated restarts, improvised opening of the enclosure, or software that writes to the disk.
Tell the recovery provider what happened, which files are essential, whether the drive was dropped or exposed to heat or liquid, and whether any backup exists. If the data is not important enough to justify recovery, replace the drive instead of continuing experiments on it.
The temperature-only exception
Seagate notes a narrow case in which an excessive-average-temperature warning may clear after correcting ventilation and lowering the drive’s average temperature. Check that fans are operating, vents are unobstructed, and the drive is not enclosed in a way that traps heat. Recheck the manufacturer’s status afterward.

This exception applies only to the temperature condition. It is not a general fix for bad-sector, read-retry, spin-up, or other persistent SMART failures. A warning that returns after cooling should be treated as unresolved.
After installing the replacement
- Install the new drive according to the computer or enclosure manufacturer’s procedures, observing the required physical mounting and interface connections.
- Install or restore the operating system and applications from trusted installation media or existing backups.
- Copy recovered files from the verified backup, keeping the old failing drive disconnected unless a recovery professional needs it.
- Set up a recurring backup schedule that includes at least one copy on a separate physical device or suitable remote destination.
- Keep the manufacturer’s diagnostic utility available so you can test the replacement if a future warning appears.
A SMART warning is most useful when it triggers a practiced backup routine rather than a last-minute scramble. Maintain more than one copy of irreplaceable data and monitor the replacement through the manufacturer’s own health guidance.
Quick Recap
Common mistakes to avoid
- Waiting for the drive to stop. SMART does not provide a dependable failure countdown.
- Relying on one successful test. A diagnostic pass can coexist with a serious SMART warning.
- Reading raw values as universal numbers. Thresholds and meanings are vendor- and model-specific.
- Using the failing disk for new storage. Move active work to healthy media after the backup.
- Running tests on a clicking or non-spinning disk. Use professional recovery advice first when the files matter.
- Confusing warranty service with recovery. A replacement drive does not restore the contents of the failed one.
