To set up alerts on YouTube Live, first choose what you mean by “donation”: turn on YouTube Super Chat and Super Stickers for paid fan-funding, add a third-party alert overlay for external tips or YouTube events, or set up YouTube Giving for charitable donations. These are separate workflows, and the right setup depends on where you want the viewer’s payment to go and where you want the alert to appear.
Choose the kind of alert you need

How do I turn on Super Chat and Super Stickers?
Supers are YouTube’s built-in paid fan-funding features. YouTube Help says: “You should be aware that Super Chat and Super Stickers aren’t crowdfunding or donation tools.” A viewer buys a highlighted message or sticker; this is different from giving money to a charity.

Check whether your channel can use Supers
YouTube’s monetization information, accessed October 3, 2026, lists an early-access YouTube Partner Program tier that includes Supers at 500 subscribers, three public uploads in the last 90 days, and either 3,000 qualified public long-form watch hours in the last 365 days or 3 million qualified Shorts views in the last 90 days. Those are tier thresholds, not a guarantee that a particular channel or stream can use Supers. YouTube also applies Supers-specific requirements, supported-location rules, and terms and policy checks. Requirements and availability can change, so check the current Earn area in Studio.

- Open the YouTube Studio app and tap Earn at the bottom.
- Open the Supers card. If it is not shown but setup is offered, choose Get started in the Supers section.
- Tap Turn on and complete the on-screen setup. If prompted, accept the Commerce Product Module.
Check Supers on desktop and during a stream
In desktop YouTube Studio, open Earn > Supers to review Supers activity and transactions. For eligible live streams and Premieres, Supers are available when live chat is on. Moderate Super Chat messages as part of your live-chat moderation. Tell viewers they can buy highlighted chat messages or stickers; do not promise that every viewer or every stream will be eligible.

YouTube says the creator share is 70% of confirmed Supers revenue, calculated after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees are deducted. This is YouTube’s stated revenue calculation, not a guaranteed take-home amount for every transaction.
How do I show donation alerts on my stream screen?
A Super Chat appearing in YouTube Live chat does not automatically mean a custom animated alert is visible in your broadcast layout. To show an on-screen alert, configure an alert provider and add its alert widget to the scene in your broadcast software.

Set up a Streamlabs Alert Box
- Connect or select the YouTube account for the channel you are streaming from in Streamlabs’ alert setup.
- In the Streamlabs dashboard, configure the YouTube event types you want to display, such as subscribers, members, or Super Chats, and customize their appearance and variations.
- Add the Alert Box in Streamlabs Desktop, use the documented OBS integration, or copy the widget link into your broadcast software as a browser source.
- Use the provider’s test function. Check that the alert is visible and audible as intended in the scene you will actually use live.
Set up StreamElements AlertBox and external tips
- Create an overlay in StreamElements and add an AlertBox to it.
- In your broadcast software, add the overlay as a browser source so it appears in the appropriate scene.
- If you want to accept external tips, configure the tipping page separately under Revenue > Tipping Settings. The
!tipcommand can display the tipping-page link in chat. - Test the alert and confirm the correct overlay is visible in the scene before going live.
StreamElements tips are handled through its separately configured tipping page; they are not YouTube Supers or YouTube Giving donations. Keep private widget links private so viewers cannot misuse them. For any provider, test the alert in the right scene and confirm the right account and event types are selected.

Yes. Streamlabs documents YouTube-specific alert settings and an Alert Box that can be used in Streamlabs Desktop or OBS. StreamElements documents overlays with an AlertBox and a separate tipping-page setup. In either case, the provider supplies the overlay or widget, while your broadcast software displays it as part of the stream scene. A successful overlay test does not itself confirm that an external payment was received.

How do I set up charitable donations with YouTube Giving?
- Add the scheduled livestream to a YouTube Giving fundraiser.
- During the stream, viewers can use the donate control in live chat. If live chat is not enabled, YouTube can show a donate button instead.
- Keep in mind that live-chat donations disable Supers on that stream, so viewers are not presented with the two contribution controls at once.
YouTube Giving Help states: “100% of your contribution goes to the nonprofit and YouTube will pay transaction fees.” That statement applies to YouTube Giving; it should not be generalized to third-party tipping services.
Why can’t I see the Supers option in YouTube Studio?
- Check channel eligibility: review the current Supers requirements in YouTube Studio’s Earn area. Meeting the early-access YPP thresholds alone does not guarantee access.
- Check location and terms: Supers require a supported location and acceptance of the applicable terms and policies.
- Check the stream’s settings: Supers are unavailable on age-restricted, unlisted, private, made-for-kids, or YouTube Giving fundraiser videos, and when live chat or comments are off.
- Look for setup prompts: in the mobile app, open Earn and the Supers card; if offered, choose Get started and complete the on-screen steps.
Why aren’t my on-screen alerts appearing?
- The test works but live events do not: check that the alert provider is connected to the correct YouTube account, that the needed event type is enabled, and that the browser source or Alert Box is present in the live scene.
- The alert is hidden or silent: check the source’s visibility and audio settings in the scene, then run the provider’s test function again.
- The viewer’s payment is being described as a donation: clarify whether it is a Super Chat, an external tip, or a YouTube Giving contribution. These routes have different recipients and rules.
