Best Streaming Software for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Setup Guide

OBS Studio is a flexible free starting point; Streamlabs Desktop offers guided onboarding and built-in widgets. Learn how to set up, test, and troubleshoot a first stream.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For most beginners who want a free, flexible desktop app, start with OBS Studio. Its Auto-Configuration Wizard helps set an initial configuration, and its basic workflow—make a scene, add capture sources, check audio, then test—gets you to a first stream without requiring overlays or other extras. Choose Streamlabs Desktop instead if guided onboarding and built-in alerts or overlays matter more to you. Neither app is guaranteed to perform well on every computer; test your actual setup before broadcasting publicly.

Which streaming software should a beginner choose?

Your priority Good first choice Trade-off
Free, flexible setup across Windows, macOS, and Linux OBS Studio You assemble a layout from scenes and sources and should learn the controls and test the result. Check the current download page for exact operating-system support.
Guided onboarding and built-in alerts, overlays, or widgets Streamlabs Desktop Basic use is free, but features such as multistreaming and premium overlays may be paid or plan-dependent. Confirm current plan limits before relying on them.

This is a workflow choice, not a performance ranking. The available official setup documentation describes features and setup paths, not a controlled speed or reliability comparison. If you are evaluating software for business presentations, education, portrait video, or multistreaming, first decide whether those particular capabilities are needed; a manufacturer comparison from Elgato also discusses XSplit Broadcaster and Meld Studio, but its claims are vendor comparison material, not an independent benchmark: Elgato’s comparison.

Check your computer and download safely

Install from the project’s official download page, then check its requirements and the current version’s operating-system support. OBS’s requirements documentation lists Windows 10 or 11 with a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU; macOS 11 or later with Intel or Apple Silicon and an OpenGL 3.3-compatible GPU; or Linux/Unix with OpenGL 3.3 and X or Wayland. Its current download page may specify newer minimum OS support for individual builds, so check both pages rather than treating one requirement list as universal: OBS system requirements and OBS downloads.

OBS Project cautions: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network all affect what a machine can sustain. Streamlabs’ own requirements guidance has differed between pages, so verify its current installer requirements as well. Its May 20, 2026 quick-start guide lists 8 GB RAM and 10 GB storage as minimum guidance, and recommends 16 GB or more RAM and a 512 GB SSD; those are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular game and scene will run smoothly. A separate Streamlabs requirements page dated April 25, 2025 gives different OS guidance and cites 3.6 Mbps or better upload speed for 720p at 30 fps on most platforms. Treat that speed as guidance, not a universal target: consult the current requirements for your app and the current streaming guidance for your destination, and leave upload headroom. See Streamlabs’ quick-start guide and its system-requirements page.

Set up your first test stream

  1. Run the initial setup. In OBS, open Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow the prompts for your intended use, hardware, and network conditions. In Streamlabs Desktop, complete its onboarding wizard, then connect your destination under Settings → Stream. The available connected services depend on the app’s current support and your account.
  2. Create one simple scene. A scene is the layout; sources are the elements inside it. Add only what the stream needs: game capture, a window or display capture, and optionally a webcam. Before capturing a display, close private windows and hide notifications that should not appear on stream. OBS explains scenes and sources in its quick-start guide; Streamlabs describes the corresponding workflow in its getting-started guide.
  3. Check audio before adding decoration. Speak into your microphone and play computer audio while watching the audio meters. If a meter does not move, or the wrong device is active, select the intended microphone or audio device in the app’s audio settings. In Streamlabs Desktop’s documented macOS workflow, desktop-audio capture requires audio-routing software. Check the Streamlabs quick-start instructions for that setup. A separate USB microphone is optional; test existing audio first.
  4. Choose video output your machine and connection can sustain. Keep the base canvas at your display’s native resolution, then choose an output resolution that your encoder and upload connection can handle. Streamlabs’ guide suggests 1280×720 output as a balance and 30 fps for less demanding content; it says faster action can use 60 fps when the setup permits. These are vendor recommendations, not guarantees. OBS recommends configuring through its wizard and testing because performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, scene complexity, and network. Check your destination’s current bitrate and format guidance instead of assuming a single bitrate works for every platform.
  5. Make a short test recording or private/test broadcast. Where your platform supports a private or test broadcast, use it; otherwise record locally for a few minutes. Check framing, capture source, voice level, computer sound, and whether frames are dropping. Review the recording or replay rather than relying only on what you saw while streaming. OBS recommends a short test before a first live stream; Streamlabs’ checklist also calls out widgets, camera placement, and audio meters. Follow the OBS quick-start guide and Streamlabs quick-start guide.
  6. Go public only when the test is right. Enter a title, description, and category where the platform asks for them. Alerts and overlays can be added later; they are optional production features, not prerequisites to a first stream.

What equipment do you actually need?

For screen or gameplay streaming, start with the computer, the software, and the audio/video sources you already have. A microphone or webcam is optional and depends on whether the format needs voice or a face camera. A capture card is relevant to particular console-to-computer workflows; check console, computer, and software compatibility before buying one. Do not buy equipment simply to complete the software setup.

Common first-stream problems and fixes

  • The app opens, but the stream stutters or drops frames: compatibility alone does not establish that the computer can encode your chosen scene. Lower output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, rerun the OBS wizard, and test again. Check upload stability and destination guidance before increasing bitrate.
  • The microphone or desktop audio is missing: watch the meters while producing sound, then select the correct device in audio settings. On macOS, follow Streamlabs’ documented audio-routing setup if you need desktop audio in that workflow.
  • The wrong content or a blank area appears: verify that the intended game, window, or display source is in the active scene and visible in the preview. Close private windows and notifications before using display capture.
  • You cannot find a Streamlabs feature or it is unavailable: check the current plan and feature details. Multistreaming and premium overlays are examples of features that may require a paid plan.
  • Your operating system does not match a listed minimum: check the current app download and requirements pages for the exact release. Streamlabs’ published requirements pages have not always matched, so do not rely on an older minimum without checking the current installer guidance.

Copyright and platform rules matter as much as settings

Before you stream, make sure you have rights to the music, video, gameplay, or other material you broadcast, and check the current rules of the destination platform. A successful technical test does not establish permission to use third-party content. Do not assume that crediting an owner or using a short excerpt makes material permissible. If your format includes recorded or reused material, review the platform’s current copyright and monetization rules before scheduling a broadcast.
