In Virtualmin, select the domain, open Web Configuration → Website Redirects, enter the source path and destination URL, and save. In Webmin’s Apache module, open Servers → Apache Webserver, choose the virtual server, open Aliases and Redirects, add the rule under URL redirects, save, and click Apply Changes. The domain must already resolve through DNS to that server; DNS gets the request to the machine, while Apache or the configured webserver generates the redirect.

What a Webmin or Virtualmin redirect actually does
A redirect is an HTTP response from the webserver telling a client to request another URL. The response normally includes a status code such as 301 or 302 and a Location header containing the destination. It is different from DNS: DNS only directs the hostname to an IP address, while the virtual host selected on that server decides whether to return a redirect.

Keep the setup in two layers:
- DNS and registration: the source domain must be registered and its DNS must point clients to the server hosting the virtual host.
- Webserver configuration: the request must land on the intended Virtualmin domain or Webmin Apache virtual server, where the redirect rule is defined.
Virtualmin installations can use Apache or Nginx. The Webmin procedure below is specifically for the Apache Webserver module; Virtualmin’s Website Redirects screen is the control-panel workflow for the selected domain.
Choose the redirect behavior before you create it
Decide what should happen to the old URL, how broadly it should match, and which protocol or virtual server should receive it. The wrong choice can leave visitors on an obsolete address, create a loop, or apply a rule to unrelated sites.

| Need | Configuration | Result |
|---|---|---|
| A permanent move | 301 status | Clients and search systems can treat the destination as the canonical replacement for the old URL. |
| A temporary change | 302 status | The old address remains the active location for a temporary arrangement. Webmin’s ordinary redirect form defaults to 302 when no code is supplied. |
| Replacement-style response | 303 status | Webmin documents 303 as a replacement-style response; use it only when that response semantics is what your application requires. |
| One known path | Simple path, such as /old-page |
Only the specified path is targeted, subject to the matching mode you select. |
| Many paths with one pattern | Regular expression, such as ^/webmin/(.*)$ |
The captured portion can be inserted into the destination, for example https://webmin.example/$1. |
| A directory mapping rather than a client redirect | Virtualmin CLI --alias |
Maps to a directory according to the alias behavior instead of using the URL destination option. |
Use a complete destination URL when the request must move to another hostname or scheme. Before saving, check that the destination cannot route back to the source through another rule.
Set up a redirect in Virtualmin’s graphical interface
Virtualmin’s domain-level workflow is the simplest choice when you are configuring one virtual server interactively.
- Sign in and select the domain. Use the domain selector to choose the virtual server that should answer the old URL. Selecting a different domain creates the rule in the wrong virtual host, even if the path looks correct.
- Open the web configuration. Choose Web Configuration for the selected domain.
- Open Website Redirects. This is the page where Virtualmin stores URL redirect rules for that virtual server.
- Enter the source path. Supply the local path the visitor requests, such as
/old-page. Keep the path separate from the hostname; the selected domain supplies the hostname. - Enter the destination. Use the full target URL, for example
https://new.example/target, when sending the visitor to another domain, path, or protocol. - Create or save the redirect. If the form offers a status selector, choose 301 for a permanent move, 302 for a temporary move, or the documented alternative required by your application.
- Test the exact source URL. Request the same scheme, hostname, and path that a visitor will use. Check the response status and the
Locationheader rather than relying only on the final page displayed by a browser.
For a quick check, run:
curl -I https://source.example/path
The response should show the status you selected and a Location pointing to the intended destination. A browser’s network panel exposes the same redirect chain and is useful when the browser follows the redirect too quickly to show the intermediate response.

Set up an Apache redirect in Webmin
Use this procedure when you want to edit the Apache virtual-host configuration through Webmin.
- Open the Apache module. Go to Webmin → Servers → Apache Webserver.
- Choose the correct virtual server. Select the virtual server for the domain. Choose Default Server only when the rule should apply globally to requests handled by that default server; a global rule can affect domains you did not intend to change.
- Open Aliases and Redirects. This page contains the URL redirect forms for the selected server.
- Fill in URL redirects. Put the source URL path in From, the destination in To, and select an HTTP status if the form provides one. A normal redirect uses 302 unless you change the status.
- Save the form. Keep the source and destination distinct and verify that the destination does not point back to the source.
- Apply the generated configuration. Click Apply Changes at the top of the Apache Webserver page. Saving the form alone does not reload Apache’s active configuration.
- Verify from outside the panel. Use
curl -Ior the browser network panel against the exact source URL and inspect the status andLocationheader.
Webmin also presents dedicated Permanent URL redirects and Temporary URL redirects. The permanent form uses 301; the temporary form uses 302. Use those forms when their fixed status matches your intent, or use the general URL redirect form when you need a different documented status such as 303.
Create the redirect from Virtualmin’s command line
The command-line interface is useful for repeatable changes, migrations, and scripts. A documented permanent redirect has this form:

virtualmin create-redirect --domain domain.name --path /old-path --redirect https://new.example/target --code 301
Each option has a distinct job:
--domainidentifies the virtual server that owns the source hostname.--pathidentifies the local URL path to match.--redirectsupplies a URL or path destination.--codesets the HTTP status. If you omit it, Virtualmin documents 302 as the default.--aliasis used when you are mapping to a directory rather than supplying a redirect URL.--exactlimits matching to the specified path.--regexpenables regular-expression matching.--httpor--httpsrestricts the rule to one protocol.
For a temporary rule, leave out --code to use the documented 302 default, or state --code 302 explicitly so the intent is visible in an automation script. For a pattern-based rule, combine --regexp with a path expression and a destination that uses the captured value, for example:
virtualmin create-redirect --domain source.example --path '^/webmin/(.*)$' --redirect 'https://webmin.example/$1' --regexp --code 301
After creating a rule through the API or command line, confirm that the generated virtual-host configuration is active by requesting the source URL. If the old response remains, inspect the active server configuration and reload or apply changes through the control panel as appropriate.
Exact paths and regular expressions
Use exact matching for a single known URL
An exact rule is easier to reason about when only one path has moved. In the CLI, --exact limits matching to the path you specify. This avoids unintentionally catching similarly named paths and makes a migration easier to audit.

Use a regular expression for a family of URLs
Regular expressions are appropriate when the old URL structure and the new structure share a variable suffix. In the pattern ^/webmin/(.*)$, the anchors require the expression to cover the complete path, and (.*) captures everything after /webmin/. The destination https://webmin.example/$1 inserts that captured suffix after the new host.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Test more than the example path. Request a path with several segments, one with a trailing slash, and one that should not match. If the captured portion is missing or appears twice, inspect the expression and the destination substitution before broadening the rule.
| Matching choice | Best use | Primary risk |
|---|---|---|
| Exact path | One retired page or a short, known list of paths | A newly added old path will not be covered automatically. |
| Regular expression | Bulk migrations where a stable prefix or suffix can be captured | An overly broad expression can redirect assets, administration paths, or unrelated URLs. |
Limit a rule to the right protocol and virtual server
HTTP and HTTPS are separate request contexts when your configuration contains separate rules. Virtualmin’s CLI provides --http and --https to restrict a rule to one protocol. In Webmin, choose the virtual server whose listener and directives handle the request; selecting the default server applies the rule more broadly.
Best Value
If you need both schemes to reach the same destination, test both explicitly:
curl -I http://source.example/path
curl -I https://source.example/path
Do not add overlapping HTTP-to-HTTPS rules in multiple layers. A Virtualmin redirect, an Apache directive, a reverse proxy or CDN rule, and an application-level redirect can each change the response. The final behavior is the result of the entire chain, not just the form you last edited.

Quick Recap
Verify a redirect end to end
- Confirm DNS resolution. Make sure the source hostname resolves to the server intended to host the virtual server. If it resolves elsewhere, no Webmin or Virtualmin rule on this machine can answer the request.
- Confirm virtual-host selection. Check that the hostname in the request matches the domain you selected in Virtualmin or the virtual server you selected in Webmin.
- Inspect headers without following the redirect. Run
curl -I https://source.example/path. Look for the expected 301, 302, or 303 status and a single, correctLocationvalue. - Follow the chain separately. Open the destination and note whether another redirect occurs. An additional hop may be intentional, but an unplanned chain makes troubleshooting harder.
- Test representative paths. Check the exact path for a simple rule, several captured paths for a regular expression, and a near miss that should remain unaffected.
- Test each configured scheme. Repeat the request over HTTP and HTTPS when both are in use or have separate rules.
- Check after applying changes. In Webmin, verify that Apply Changes was clicked. For a Virtualmin command-line change, verify that the generated virtual-host configuration is active.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No redirect; the old page loads | The hostname resolves to another server, the wrong virtual server was edited, or Apache has not reloaded the saved rule. | Confirm DNS, reselect the domain or virtual server, click Apply Changes in Webmin, and retest with curl -I. |
| A different site redirects | The rule was added to Default Server or another virtual host. | Move the rule to the source domain’s virtual server unless the behavior is intentionally global. |
| Status is 302 instead of 301 | The status was left at the normal default or the CLI --code option was omitted. |
Choose the permanent redirect form, set status 301 in the general form, or add --code 301 to the CLI command. |
| Redirect loop | The destination points back to the source, or another layer is enforcing a conflicting HTTP-to-HTTPS or application redirect. | Compare the source and destination character by character, then inspect Virtualmin, Apache directives, HTTPS enforcement, proxy or CDN rules, and application-level redirects. |
| Regex rule loses the old suffix | The expression does not capture the suffix, or the destination does not reference the capture. | Use a pattern such as ^/webmin/(.*)$, reference the capture as $1, and test a path with multiple segments. |
| Regex rule catches too much | The expression is not anchored or is broader than the intended URL family. | Use explicit anchors and prefixes, test a near miss, and prefer --exact for one-off paths. |
| HTTP works but HTTPS does not, or vice versa | The schemes use different virtual-host rules or one scheme is handled by another layer. | Test each scheme separately, add the appropriate protocol restriction, and inspect the configuration serving the failing scheme. |
| The browser shows the destination but diagnostics look wrong | The browser followed one or more redirects automatically. | Use the network panel or curl -I to inspect the intermediate status and Location header directly. |
Practical deployment checklist
- Register the source domain and point its DNS to the server that hosts the virtual server.
- Choose 301 only for a permanent move; retain 302 for a temporary change and use 303 only for its intended replacement-style semantics.
- Select the domain-level Virtualmin workflow or the exact Apache virtual server in Webmin.
- Use a simple path for one URL,
--exactfor strict CLI matching, and--regexponly when a tested pattern is necessary. - Specify
--httpor--httpswhen the rule must be limited to one protocol. - Save the rule and apply Apache changes before testing.
- Verify status,
Location, both schemes, representative paths, and the absence of loops withcurl -I.
