SanDisk says it will be Meta’s exclusive provider of next-generation flash storage for Meta VR Glasses when the glasses launch in spring 2027. The certified lineup will include a SanDisk microSD Express memory card for likely in-device expansion and a SanDisk USB-C flash drive for removable files and media. Capacities, prices and final compatibility limits have not yet been announced.

What SanDisk announced

SanDisk announced on October 14, 2026, that its storage products will carry the “Made for Meta” designation for Meta VR Glasses. SanDisk says the products are tested and certified for the glasses and are intended to add capacity for games, applications and virtual-reality content.

The announcement names two product types:

  • SanDisk microSD Express memory card: the clearest candidate for storage installed in the glasses’ compute hardware.
  • SanDisk USB-C flash drive: a removable drive for transferring or carrying files and media.

SanDisk vice president of product management Susan Park said, “We are thrilled to be the exclusive storage provider to help Meta power the future of virtual reality.” The statement establishes SanDisk’s announced supplier relationship, but it does not disclose retail models, capacities or pricing.

How storage fits into Meta VR Glasses

Meta says the glasses will connect to a separate compute puck through an optical tether. The puck handles computing, battery power and storage, allowing the glasses themselves to remain lightweight. Meta’s developer documentation describes the glasses as weighing roughly 100 grams, running Horizon OS and using eyes and hands as primary inputs.

SANDISK 256GB Ultra microSD Card + Adapter, Up to 150MB/s Read Speeds | UHS-I, Full HD, C10, U1, A1, Ideal for Android Smartphones, Tablets and MIL cameras - SDSQUAC-256G-GN6MA
  • Compatible with Nintendo-Switch (NOT Nintendo-Switch 2)
  • Expand your storage in a flash: ideal for Android smartphones and tablets, Chromebooks, and Windows laptops.
  • Increase your TV show, movie, and Full HD video[4] recording collections dramatically with up to a massive 1.5TB[1].
  • Transfer files fast with up to 150MB/s[2] read speeds and SanDisk MobileMate USB micro 3.0 microSD card reader[6].
  • Load apps faster with A1-rated performance[3].

That design matters when choosing an expansion product. A card slot, if included in the final consumer hardware, would be located in the compute puck rather than in the eyeglass frame. A USB-C drive would remain external and would need to be connected to the puck’s port, carried separately or used during file transfers.

What is known about capacity and compatibility

Meta has announced a spring 2027 launch and a price of $1,299.99 in the United States. The company has not published a final storage-expansion specification in the announcements cited here.

Road to VR reported that the glasses are expected to include 128GB of internal storage and may support microSD cards up to 1TB. Those figures are reported specifications, not final SanDisk-confirmed limits. The recommended speed class and final storage standard were still unannounced in that report.

SanDisk and Meta have also not stated whether every microSD Express capacity will be certified, whether cards must be formatted in a particular way, or whether Horizon OS will permit moving installed applications and games to removable storage. Until those details are published, buyers should treat the “Made for Meta” label as a compatibility signal rather than proof that any particular capacity or workflow is supported.

MicroSD card versus USB-C flash drive

Option Likely role What is confirmed What remains unknown
SanDisk microSD Express memory card Potential in-device expansion for games, apps and VR content SanDisk says it is tested and certified for Meta VR Glasses Capacity, price, speed class, maximum supported size, slot location and whether applications can be installed on it
SanDisk USB-C flash drive Removable storage for files and media SanDisk identifies it as part of the certified Made for Meta lineup Capacity, price, sustained performance, supported file systems and whether the drive can host installed games or apps

A microSD card is the more natural choice if Meta enables persistent expansion inside the compute puck. A USB-C drive is better understood as portable external storage: useful for moving recordings, videos, documents or other files, but not automatically equivalent to an internal expansion card.

What prospective buyers should check before purchasing

Wait for a verified model and capacity

UploadVR reported that SanDisk had not announced specific capacities or prices for either product type. No exact model numbers or retail listings were available in the announcement. Avoid buying a card marketed only as “fast” or “VR-ready” until Meta or SanDisk identifies the supported standard and capacity.

Confirm the final speed requirement

The recommended speed class has not been published. VR applications can be sensitive to loading and sustained transfer performance, so a card’s advertised peak read speed alone may not establish suitability. The final Made for Meta specification should identify the required class or performance tier.

Check physical fit and access

Because storage is handled by the compute puck, verify where the microSD slot and USB-C ports are located, how accessible they are while the puck is tethered, and whether a connected flash drive interferes with carrying or charging the system.

Review software behavior

Meta should clarify whether Horizon OS treats the card as adopted storage, a media-only volume or a location for selected content. That distinction determines whether expansion increases usable space for installed games and apps or merely provides a place to store files.

Launch timing, price and availability

Meta says Meta VR Glasses will go on sale in spring 2027 at $1,299.99 in the United States. SanDisk has not announced launch pricing, regional availability, warranty terms or the date on which the storage products will reach retailers. The spring 2027 timing refers to the glasses, not a confirmed shipping date for every storage accessory.

When listings appear, compare the certification label, exact capacity, stated speed class, warranty and return policy. A “Made for Meta” product should be identifiable by a specific model number; generic descriptions without that information do not establish certification.

Why the announcement matters

At 128GB, if the reported internal-storage figure is accurate, high-resolution games, captured video and other VR content could make expansion valuable. The separate compute-puck architecture also gives Meta a practical place to provide removable storage without adding weight to the glasses frame.

However, the most important buying details are still pending: the final slot specification, supported capacities, performance requirements, operating-system limitations and prices. Until Meta and SanDisk publish those details, the certified microSD Express card is a promising expansion path, while the USB-C drive should be treated as a flexible file-transfer accessory rather than a confirmed replacement for internal storage.
