WooCommerce’s built-in variable products handle attribute combinations and variation-specific details such as price, stock, and images; they do not by themselves provide conditional extra-field visibility. To show or hide fields when a shopper selects a variation or answers another question, use an extension whose documentation explicitly supports conditional logic. Check the extension’s exact name: WooCommerce’s official Product Add-Ons extension does not include built-in conditional logic, while a separately documented Product Addons and Extra Options extension does.
Choose the feature that matches what you need
| Shopper experience you want | Use | What it handles |
|---|---|---|
| Different price, stock, image, or SKU for product attribute combinations | Core variable product | Variations are defined combinations of product attributes. See WooCommerce’s Variable Products documentation. |
| Show or hide an extra field based on the selected variation or another answer | An add-on/options extension with documented conditional logic | WooCommerce’s Conditional Logic Rules documentation describes field rules, including variation-based conditions. |
| Show the same add-on fields for every variation, without conditional display | Product Add-Ons may fit | WooCommerce says its Product Add-Ons extension lacks built-in conditional logic and that add-ons on a variable product apply to all variations. See Product Add-Ons documentation. |
| Require or unlock another product based on a selection | Product Dependencies | This is product eligibility/dependency behavior, not general field visibility. Its documentation describes constraints on a product depending on itself through its parent or variation. See Product Dependencies for WooCommerce documentation. |
| Guide a shopper through a multi-part configuration | Composite Products | Composite Products supports stepwise component selection and conditional logic. See WooCommerce’s Composite Products documentation. |
These extensions are not interchangeable. Before choosing one, verify that it supports the exact field-visibility, variation-pricing, dependency, or guided-component behavior you need, and check compatibility with your WooCommerce setup, theme, and editor. Current compatibility and pricing are not established here.

Set up the product variations first
Build the valid variation combinations in WooCommerce before configuring conditional fields. This gives an extension defined choices to use as condition sources.
- Edit or create a product and choose Variable product as its product type.
- Add attributes and their values. Save the attributes for use in variations.
- Create only the valid combinations, or generate all combinations if every possible combination is a real purchasable option. Avoid generating combinations that customers cannot actually order.
- Set the appropriate details for each variation, such as price, stock status, image, shipping data, and other applicable fields. Save the product.
WooCommerce describes variations as combinations of product attributes and supports creating all combinations or adding selected variations individually. See the Variable Products documentation for its variable-product workflow.

Configure conditional fields with a supporting extension
Once the variations are in place, add the extra fields using an extension that explicitly documents conditional rules. In the documented Product Addons and Extra Options workflow, a field rule uses a condition source, a relation and value, a show-or-hide action, and a choice of whether any or all conditions must match. Exact controls and labels can differ between extensions and versions.
- Add the extra field that should appear only in a relevant case.
- Choose the condition source, such as the selected product variation or another field’s answer.
- Set the relation and value that should trigger the rule—for example, the relevant variation or answer.
- Choose whether a match shows or hides the field, and specify whether any or all configured conditions must match.
- Save the product and the extension’s field settings.
For example, a personalization field could be shown only for a variation that includes personalization, while an additional-size question could be shown only after a shopper selects a custom-size option. These examples describe the rule pattern; the available condition sources depend on the extension.

Understand the Product Add-Ons limitation
WooCommerce’s official Product Add-Ons documentation states: “Product Add-Ons does not have built-in support for conditional logic.” It also says add-ons attached to a variable product are inherited by every variation and cannot be configured separately per variation. The documentation points readers seeking conditional fields toward Gravity Forms with its Product Add-Ons extension.

Preview the product as a customer and check the complete selection path, not just the field editor. WooCommerce’s variable-product guide says shoppers must select required options before they can add the item to the cart.
