To set up CodeGuard, connect your website with working FTP or SFTP credentials, choose the files and database you want covered, then let the first backup finish. CodeGuard says you do not need to configure cron jobs. After setup, check the account dashboard to confirm backup and monitoring settings for your plan.
Before you connect your website
Check that the CodeGuard plan you intend to use has enough website capacity and storage for your needs. Plan limits, pricing, billing cadence, and retention options can change, so use CodeGuard’s current plans page rather than relying on old screenshots or quoted prices. The page reviewed lists a 14-day trial and daily backups; these are current vendor terms, not guarantees that they will remain unchanged.
- Have working FTP or SFTP credentials and access to the site content you want backed up.
- Identify the correct website directory before selecting files.
- Decide whether the database should be included as well as the site files.
Connect the site and choose what to back up
CodeGuard’s file-backup setup uses FTP or SFTP to retrieve website content. Sign in to your CodeGuard account and follow its connection prompts with the credentials for the relevant site. Select the directory containing the content you want protected; choosing the wrong directory can leave important files outside the backup.
If the website depends on a database, add that database as part of the setup where applicable. File backup and database backup cover different parts of a site, so confirm in your account that the database you need is included.

For a WordPress multisite
CodeGuard’s multisite guide describes connecting the main site with SFTP, entering the site URL, selecting the directory unique to that site, and starting code capture. The database can be added during file backup. CodeGuard says database ChangeAlerts are not provided for this multisite setup. See the WordPress multisite instructions for the service’s described workflow.
Let the first backup complete
The initial file backup retrieves the site’s file content. CodeGuard describes later backups as differential: changed or added files are transferred, while deletions are recorded. Its FAQ says later checks use file metadata such as name, size, timestamp, file type, permissions, and last modified date. Wait for the initial backup to complete, then review the dashboard to verify that the intended site and content are covered.

You do not need to create a cron job according to CodeGuard’s FAQ, which answers “Will I have to set up cron jobs?” with “No.” That does not remove the need for valid credentials and appropriate access to the files and database you want backed up; investigate connection errors if setup cannot reach them.
Check monitoring and know your restore options
CodeGuard describes file-change notifications and three restore approaches. Choose based on how much you need to replace and whether you want CodeGuard to perform the restoration or handle the files yourself.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.WordPress plugin option
CodeGuard says its WordPress plugin supports automatic website and database backups and automatic restore. The company claims setup takes less than one minute; that is a vendor statement, not an independently measured setup time. CodeGuard also describes the plugin as supporting daily automatic backups in its FAQ, so check the current account and plugin instructions for the options available to your installation.
