You can use Claude Code in VS Code with Opus 5.5 through Microsoft Foundry, but you must deploy the model and point Claude Code at that deployment by its actual name. The Microsoft setup guide’s sample Opus model is the older claude-opus-4-6; don’t assume its defaults select Opus 5.5. Microsoft’s current catalog lists claude-opus-5-5 as generally available. After configuration, check Claude Code’s /status output to confirm the provider and model.
What you need before setup
- A paid Azure subscription with a valid payment method and access to Microsoft Foundry.
- A Foundry project in a supported region, suitable project and resource permissions, and eligibility to use partner model offerings through Azure Marketplace. Availability and account eligibility can vary.
- VS Code and the Claude Code extension. On Windows, Microsoft directs users to Git Bash or WSL2.
- For Microsoft’s documented system requirements, at least 4 GB of RAM; 8 GB is recommended. Git 2.23 or later is optional and recommended for pull-request helpers.
- Azure CLI if you plan to authenticate with Microsoft Entra ID. An API key is an alternative.
Microsoft says Claude model availability can change. Check that your subscription and project can access the model in your selected region before configuring the extension. Microsoft’s Claude Code setup guide describes the requirements and configuration.

Choose the Foundry hosting option
Foundry offers Azure-hosted and Anthropic-hosted Claude options. “Using Foundry” does not by itself mean inference runs entirely on Azure; the hosting choice affects deployment options, geography, APIs, data handling and the applicable operational arrangements.
| Option | Deployment types and geography | API and decision points |
|---|---|---|
| Azure-hosted Claude | Global Standard and US Data Zone Standard | Assess whether the deployment type and geography meet your needs, along with data processing, residency, support and purchasing requirements. |
| Anthropic-hosted Claude | Global Standard | Supports additional APIs, including /files and /skills. Consider API needs, data handling, support and purchasing requirements. |
Microsoft states that Anthropic is the seller and operator of Claude models in Foundry for both options, and that Anthropic’s Claude terms apply. Review the current Foundry Claude hosting information and applicable terms when choosing.

Deploy Opus 5.5 and note its deployment name
- In Microsoft Foundry, open your project and deploy the Claude Opus 5.5 model. The current catalog identifier is
claude-opus-5-5. - Record the deployment name shown for your deployment. Claude Code must use that deployed name; it may not be identical to the catalog identifier if you chose a different name during deployment.
- Check your deployment’s availability and quota in Foundry. The catalog lists a 1M-token context window and 128K maximum output for Opus 5.5. These are model specifications, not a promise of a particular response speed or quota.
The setup guide’s default Opus deployment example and validation example use claude-opus-4-6, not Opus 5.5. The current catalog lists claude-opus-5-5; use the actual name of your Opus 5.5 deployment instead of copying the guide’s older sample. See Microsoft’s current Claude model catalog.
Configure Claude Code in VS Code
- Install the Claude Code extension from the VS Code Marketplace.
- If using Microsoft Entra ID, sign in first with Azure CLI:
az login. Use the account and subscription that have access to the Foundry project and deployment. - In VS Code, open Settings and search for Claude Code: Environment Variables.
- Add
CLAUDE_CODE_USE_FOUNDRYwith value1, andANTHROPIC_FOUNDRY_RESOURCEwith the name of your Foundry resource. If using API-key authentication, add the API key in the environment variables as well. Keep the key secret and do not commit it to a repository. - Set Claude Code’s Opus model selection to your deployment name. The guide documents
ANTHROPIC_DEFAULT_OPUS_MODELfor this purpose; set its value to the actual Opus 5.5 deployment name, rather than leaving the guide’s olderclaude-opus-4-6sample in place. - Open the Claude Code panel using the Spark icon in VS Code.
The extension setup applies the guide’s documented Foundry environment-variable and deployment-name mechanisms to the current Opus 5.5 deployment. The guide does not provide an Opus 5.5-specific VS Code configuration example.

Entra ID or API key?
Entra ID through Azure CLI avoids putting a long-lived project API key in the extension configuration and can fit centralized identity management. An API key can be simpler to configure, but anyone who obtains it may be able to use it; store and rotate it according to your organization’s policy. Microsoft documents both authentication approaches in its Claude Code configuration guide.

- In the Claude Code panel, run
/status. - Confirm the provider is Microsoft Foundry and the model shown matches the deployment name you recorded for Opus 5.5. If the model is the older sample or another model, correct the deployment-name setting and check that the deployment exists and is accessible.
- Send a small prompt asking Claude Code to summarize the open project. A successful response confirms the extension can reach the configured service; it does not replace checking the provider and model in
/status.
If you prefer to select the deployment in the CLI, the guide documents claude --model <deployment-name>. Replace the placeholder with your actual deployment name.

Understand quota and billing before relying on throughput
Microsoft’s quota table lists pay-as-you-go defaults for Azure-hosted Opus 5.5 Global Standard and US Data Zone Standard of 40 requests per minute, 40,000 input tokens per minute, and 8,000 output tokens per minute. These are dated, subscription-specific defaults—not guaranteed throughput. The same table lists higher Enterprise/MCA-E defaults and zero free-trial defaults. Check your project’s actual capacity in the current Foundry quota and rate-limit information.
Foundry Claude usage is billed through Claude Consumption Units. These quota figures are not prices; consult Microsoft’s current billing documentation for applicable charges before deploying or scaling usage. Availability, quota and billing details can change.
