Photonic-crystal colour is structural colour: periodic micro- or nanoscale structures interact with light to select which visible wavelengths are reflected or transmitted. To tailor the colour, designers adjust the structure’s scale and arrangement, choose suitable materials, and—in responsive designs—control the stimulus or viewing geometry. There is no universal recipe for a target colour; the result depends on the material, geometry and optical conditions.
How do photonic crystals create colour?
Unlike a dye or pigment, which colours by absorbing parts of the spectrum, a photonic crystal produces colour through the way its repeating structure interacts with light. The structure’s periodic units and their dimensions affect which wavelengths are reflected or transmitted, giving the material its visible appearance. Reviews describe this as structural colour and distinguish it from other optical effects, including thin-film interference, plasmon resonance, guided-mode resonance and Mie resonance. Those mechanisms can also produce colour, but they are not interchangeable explanations for photonic-crystal colour. A 2023 review in the Journal of Materials Science & Technology surveys material systems and preparation approaches for photonic crystals with structural colours.

What design choices change the colour?
Structure and scale
The central design task is to tune the periodic structure so its optical response falls in the desired part of the visible spectrum. Changing the scale or arrangement of the repeating units changes how the structure interacts with light. The specific dimensions needed for a target colour depend on the material and the optical conditions, so a single set of dimensions cannot be prescribed for every design.

Material properties
Material and geometry are linked choices: the material system is part of the structure’s optical behaviour, and it also constrains how the crystal can be made or integrated into a device. The 2023 review covers monodisperse inorganic nanoparticles, polymer nanoparticles, inorganic/organic core-shell nanoparticles and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The review discusses these families as materials used to prepare photonic crystals, rather than as a ranked list of universally suitable options.

Viewing geometry and external stimuli
Some photonic crystals are designed to change appearance when the viewing angle changes or when the structure encounters an external stimulus. Depending on the system, reported stimuli include solvents and other chemical conditions, ions, pH, biomolecules, temperature, mechanical or magnetic stress, and light. These responses belong to different material and device designs; one crystal should not be assumed to respond to all of them. A fixed-colour design and a stimulus-responsive design therefore have different goals: one aims to maintain a chosen appearance under its intended conditions, while the other uses changing conditions to alter its optical response.
How are photonic-crystal colours made?
Fabrication methods differ in the structures they form and in their suitability for patterning, flexible substrates and production. Reviews describe several approaches, but do not provide a quantitative scorecard that ranks them for all applications.

| Approach | What the reviews describe | Design consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Bottom-up self-assembly | Colloidal particles assemble into periodic structures. A 2023 review characterizes this family of approaches qualitatively as advantageous for cost, processability and batch scale; it does not supply comparative figures for cost, throughput or yield. Source | Useful to consider when particle assembly and processability suit the intended structure. The cited characterization is not a universal rule. |
| Template-assisted assembly, inkjet printing and drop coating | Identified as routes for assembling colloidal particles into photonic crystals. Source | Assess the patterning and structure requirements of the particular design; the review does not establish one method as best for all cases. |
| Flexible-substrate and polymer approaches | A 2024 review surveys colloidal-sphere assembly on flexible substrates, polymer packaging and polymer-based direct assembly. Source | Relevant when flexibility, self-support or integration with a polymer substrate is required. |
| Nanoimprinting and 3D printing | Included in a 2024 review of flexible self-supporting photonic crystals. Source | Compare against the required patterning resolution, substrate, flexibility and production needs; no quantitative cross-method ranking is established. |
| Top-down microprocessing | A 2023 review says it is not typically used for the photonic structures discussed, citing cost and production-efficiency constraints. Source | This is the review authors’ general characterization of the structures they cover, not a rule for every photonic-crystal design. |
A simple structural example: the Bragg stack
A one-dimensional Bragg stack consists of alternating layers with different refractive indices. Review literature describes these stacks as relatively simple, with optical properties that are more readily predicted than those of some more complex structures. The available sources do not give target-specific layer thicknesses or a calculation for choosing them, so a design needs material- and geometry-specific analysis rather than a universal thickness prescription.

A responsive photonic crystal can make a change in its surroundings visible through a change in colour. Depending on the design, the response may relate to a chemical condition, temperature, mechanical or magnetic stress, or light. This makes responsive structural colour a potential basis for sensing, but the useful signal and operating conditions depend on the specific material and device.

One reported demonstration, “Structural colour printing using a magnetically tunable and lithographically fixable photonic crystal,” appeared in Nature Photonics in 2009. Its abstract reports high-resolution patterning of multiple structural colours within seconds through successive colour tuning and fixing, using a single material and maskless lithography. That result describes the paper’s particular demonstration; it is not a general production-speed or capability benchmark for photonic-crystal fabrication.
Where might tailored photonic-crystal colour be used?
Reviews identify sensors, displays, anti-counterfeiting inks, textiles, smart windows and biomedical applications as potential areas. Responsive colour is especially relevant where a visible change could signal humidity, a magnetic field or another environmental condition. These are research and application directions; the review literature cited here does not establish that every use is commercially mature or deployed in a specific product.
