If you want an alert when a YouTube livestream starts, open its scheduled event and select Notify me. If you mean alerts for each new chat message, YouTube’s official guidance cited here does not document a viewer setting for that. Live Chat is separate: viewers use it on the YouTube watch page, while creators manage it in YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room.
Get notified when a livestream starts
- Find the scheduled livestream or Premiere on YouTube. You can browse upcoming and current events from the Live area.
- Open the event and select Notify me. YouTube Help describes this as the action to request a notification when a livestream or Premiere goes live (Watch live streams – Computer).
- When the stream begins, open its YouTube watch page to watch and, if available, join Live Chat.
The Notify me control is for the event starting; it is not a documented alert for each incoming chat message. YouTube’s cited guidance does not establish delivery timing or device-notification settings, so do not assume a particular alert method or schedule.

Open and use Live Chat as a viewer
Live Chat is available on livestream and Premiere watch pages, but not in embedded players (YouTube Help: Watch live streams – Computer). If a video is embedded on another site and you cannot see chat, open the video on YouTube itself. When chat is available, you can read messages and send one from the chat panel while watching.

Set up and moderate chat as the creator
Chat availability and moderation are creator controls, distinct from a viewer’s request to be notified when a stream starts. YouTube provides live chat settings in YouTube Studio and the Live Control Room. Depending on the controls available for your stream, creators can turn chat on or off, set blocked words, hold potentially inappropriate messages for review, and enable slow mode (YouTube Help: Moderate live chat).

Managing moderators can also use certain chat controls, including participation modes and chat summaries, but they do not get access to YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room. YouTube’s Android guide for managing moderators describes those moderator capabilities.
If a notification or chat option is missing
- You cannot find Notify me: Check that you are viewing an upcoming livestream or Premiere event, rather than an ordinary video or an already-started stream. The documented control applies to upcoming events.
- You cannot see chat in an embedded video: Open the stream’s YouTube watch page; embedded players do not provide Live Chat.
- You cannot send a message: Chat may not be available for that stream, or its settings may limit participation. The creator or an authorized moderator manages chat availability and moderation.
- You expect an alert for every message: The cited YouTube guidance documents a start notification for an upcoming event, not viewer notifications for each new chat message.
