On a Pixel 3a, open Phone → More → Settings and look for Spam and Call Screen or Call Screen. If the option is present, follow the setup prompts. Google’s current instructions do not specifically guarantee Call Screen support on the Pixel 3a, so the setting’s presence on your phone is the practical check.
Set up Call Screen on your Pixel 3a

Open Google Play and update the Phone app if an update is available. Google recommends using the latest Phone app version for Call Screen setup.

Tap Call Screen and follow any prompts shown. For automatic screening on Pixel 6 and older, Google’s path is Unknown call settings, where you choose which caller types to screen.

To screen an incoming call yourself, tap Screen call on the incoming-call screen. Call Assist asks who is calling and why. Read the live transcript, then answer, hang up, or select an available response.
If you see no Call Screen setting and no setup prompt, Google says the device does not work with Call Screen. Its current support page does not name the Pixel 3a or provide a complete model, carrier, software-version, and country compatibility matrix, so availability may differ between devices.

Choose manual or automatic screening

For automatic screening, Google says detected spam calls are declined and other screened calls can ring through. Screening uses contacts saved on the device when deciding whether to screen: saving a number as a contact prevents it from being screened.
Check whether Call Screen is available in your country
Google’s current support page lists automatic Call Screen on Pixel phones in Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. It lists manual Call Screen in Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Spain, the UK, and the US; manual screening requires a SIM card from one of those countries. These lists describe country availability, not a guarantee for every Pixel model, carrier, or software configuration.

A Pixel 3a owner has reported using Call Screen in a Google Phone app Community thread, but that user report is not an official, current compatibility guarantee. The reliable check is whether the setting and setup prompts appear in your Phone app.
Why the Screen call button or setting may be missing

The phone or configuration may not be supported. Google says that if the setting is absent and no setup prompts appear, the device does not work with Call Screen.

Your location or SIM may not qualify. Availability differs between manual and automatic screening; manual Call Screen requires a SIM from a listed country.

The Phone app may need an update. Check Google Play for an available update, then look again in Phone settings.

Connected audio may affect automatic screening. Google notes that headphones or Bluetooth can prevent automatic screening, depending on the device model.
Know the limitations before relying on screening
Call Screen does not catch every spam or robocall, and its transcript may not fully understand what a caller says. Review the live transcript rather than treating it as a perfect record of the conversation.
Google says automatic screening does not work while roaming, and screened calls are not forwarded. If you rely on call forwarding, automatic screening may not fit your setup. Third-party call-recording and screen-recording apps can also interfere; Google recommends turning them off before using Call Screen.

What happens to screening transcripts and recordings
Google says Call Screen transcripts and recordings are stored on the phone. After a screened call, you can review the recording and transcript and choose whether to share screening audio, transcript, and call details with Google. The information Google describes is limited to the screening phase, before you join the call.
