How to Set Up BlueMap on a Minecraft Java Server

A complete BlueMap setup guide for Minecraft Java Edition: choose the right plugin, mod, or CLI build, render your world, configure the web server, open the 3D map, and fix common errors.

To set up BlueMap, install the build that matches your server platform and Minecraft version, restart so it creates its configuration, edit the generated files, render the exact world folder, and open BlueMap’s built-in web server at http://<your-server-ip>:<port>/. BlueMap supports Paper, Spigot, Fabric, Forge, Sponge, and a standalone command-line deployment. It reads a Java Edition world, builds 3D models of the surface, and serves the result in a browser.

What BlueMap does

BlueMap reads Minecraft world files and generates 3D models of the world’s surface for an interactive web viewer. It is not a separate map file format that you open manually: the server or command-line process renders terrain and writes browser-ready data into a webroot.

You can run it in two broad ways:

  • Server deployment: install a plugin or mod alongside the Minecraft server. This is the practical choice when the map should follow a live server.
  • Standalone deployment: use the BlueMap command-line build to render a world without running a Minecraft server at the same time.

BlueMap is for Minecraft Java Edition. The official installation documentation states that Bedrock worlds are not supported.

Check compatibility before downloading anything

Use a Java Edition world

Confirm that the world you intend to render is a Java Edition world and that you have access to its actual world directory. A Bedrock save cannot be installed into BlueMap as a supported input.

Install the Java version required by your BlueMap release

Java requirements have changed between BlueMap releases. Current installation documentation lists Java 25 or newer, while older installation material lists Java 8 or newer. Do not select a Java version from an old tutorial merely because it worked for an earlier release. The release documentation for the exact build you download is authoritative.

Check the Java runtime used by the server process, not only the Java version in your desktop terminal. A host can have several Java installations, and a service manager may invoke a different executable than your interactive shell.

Match the jar to both the platform and Minecraft version

The releases page publishes separate builds and compatibility ranges. Choose the Paper or Spigot plugin for a Paper or Spigot server, the Fabric mod for Fabric, the Forge mod for Forge, and the Sponge-compatible plugin for Sponge. Also verify that the supported Minecraft version range includes your server version. A jar for the wrong loader can fail before BlueMap creates any configuration, so compatibility is the first troubleshooting checkpoint.

Prepare permissions and a maintenance window

  • Have permission to place files in the server’s plugins, mods, or configuration directory.
  • Be able to restart the server and read its console output.
  • Know the world folder’s exact name, including capitalization. The render command uses that folder name rather than a friendly display name.
  • Decide which network interface and port, if any, should expose the web viewer. Binding a web server to every interface can expose it beyond your intended audience.

The reviewed official material does not publish a validated render-time benchmark or a typical storage requirement. Expect resource use to depend on world size, map settings, hardware, and how much terrain you render; do not plan capacity around an invented fixed number.

Choose a deployment method

Question Plugin or mod on the server Standalone CLI
Compatibility Must match the server loader and Minecraft version. Must be able to read the world version and run with the Java version required by the CLI release.
Live updates Can render and update while the Minecraft server changes. Best for separately managed, on-demand or scheduled rendering.
Web delivery Uses BlueMap’s integrated web settings, including bind address and port. Uses the CLI’s built-in web-server mode after rendering.
Operational work Place one platform-specific jar, restart, edit generated configuration, and render. Maintain a separate Java process, configuration, render command, and web endpoint.

For a normal multiplayer server, use the plugin or mod path. Choose the CLI when rendering must be isolated from the game server or when you only need to publish a world snapshot.

Install BlueMap on Paper or Spigot

1. Download the matching plugin

Download the BlueMap plugin jar for your server API and Minecraft version. Do not rename a build to make it appear compatible; the loader and version metadata still need to match.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Put the jar in the plugins directory

Copy the jar into the server’s plugins folder. Keep only the build you intend to load there so an older duplicate cannot be selected accidentally.

3. Restart the server

Stop and start the server normally. On the first successful load, BlueMap creates its configuration under:

./plugins/BlueMap/

If that directory does not appear, inspect the console before changing settings. A missing directory commonly means the jar was not loaded, the platform or Minecraft version is wrong, or the Java runtime does not satisfy the release.

4. Edit the generated configuration

Open the files BlueMap generated in ./plugins/BlueMap/ and configure the maps and web server for your installation. Preserve the file format and make one change at a time so a syntax error is easy to identify.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After saving changes, apply them with:

/bluemap reload

You can restart instead if that is safer for your hosting setup. Read the console after a reload; warnings at this point usually identify a path, permission, or configuration problem.

5. Render the world

Start the initial render by naming the real world directory:

/bluemap render <world>

Replace <world> with the folder name on disk. For example, if the save directory is called survival, use:

/bluemap render survival

Using a display title, an outdated folder name, or a path that is not present on the server will prevent the intended world from rendering. Monitor the server console while the first render runs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install BlueMap on Fabric or Forge

1. Download the loader-specific mod

Select the Fabric or Forge BlueMap mod that matches both your loader and Minecraft version. These are not interchangeable: a Fabric jar is not a Forge jar.

2. Copy the mod and restart

Place the jar in the server’s mods directory and restart. Fabric servers also need the Fabric API mod. Ensure the Fabric API version is appropriate for the server’s Minecraft and Fabric versions.

3. Find and edit the generated files

For Fabric and Forge, BlueMap’s generated files are under:

./config/bluemap/

Edit the configuration there, then apply changes with:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

/bluemap reload

Restarting is also valid when you are already changing other server mods. If you cannot find ./config/bluemap/, confirm that the mod actually loaded and that you are looking in the server’s working directory rather than a client installation.

4. Render the correct world

Use the same render command as on Paper or Spigot:

/bluemap render <world>

Use the exact save-folder name. A successful mod installation does not automatically mean every world has been rendered; the initial render is an explicit operation.

Install BlueMap on Sponge

Use the Sponge-compatible BlueMap plugin supplied for your Sponge and Minecraft version. Sponge deployments use the server’s mods folder. Restart the server, then edit the generated configuration under:

./config/bluemap/

Apply configuration changes with /bluemap reload and begin the initial map build with:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/bluemap render <world>

As with the other server types, verify the jar’s compatibility before investigating runtime errors and use the console output to identify load or configuration failures.

Configure BlueMap’s web viewer

Know where the files are served from

BlueMap includes a small integrated web server. By default, its webroot is:

  • Now Minecraft lovers can play a special version of UNO!
  • Same as Basic UNO but features Minecraft characters and includes special Creeper rule card. Draw this card and the other players have to draw three more cards from the pile!
  • The goal is to get rid of all the cards in your hand.
  • First player or team to 500 wins.
  • When you're down to one card, don't forget to yell "UNO"!
./bluemap/web/

Rendered map data is written below the webroot’s maps/ directory. The viewer needs both the generated web assets and the rendered map data; pointing a separate web server at the wrong directory will produce a blank or incomplete site.

Set the web-server options

In webserver.conf, review these settings:

  • enabled — turns BlueMap’s integrated web server on or off.
  • webroot — selects the directory containing the viewer files and rendered map data.
  • ip — selects the network address to bind to.
  • port — selects the TCP port used by the viewer.

If ip is omitted, the configuration reference says BlueMap binds to all network interfaces. That can make the map reachable on every interface the host exposes, so choose the bind address deliberately and open the corresponding firewall port only where needed.

Open the map in a browser

With the web server enabled, the documented URL pattern is:

http://<your-server-ip>:<port>/

On the same machine, you can use its local address. From another device, use the server address that device can reach and the exact configured port. If the page does not load, test the server locally first, then check firewall rules and external routing.

Apply web settings safely

After editing webserver.conf or other BlueMap files, run:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
/bluemap reload

Read the console for confirmation or errors. If the port is already occupied, BlueMap cannot bind to it; select an unused port and reload or restart after correcting the file.

Use the standalone BlueMap CLI

The CLI is appropriate when you want to render a world without installing a plugin or mod into a running Minecraft server. Keep the CLI files and the world it reads in locations that the Java process can access.

1. Generate the initial configuration

Run the CLI jar once:

java -jar BlueMap-cli.jar

This first run creates the configuration files needed for a standalone installation.

2. Allow required Mojang resources

Set the configuration’s accept-download option to allow BlueMap to download the required Mojang resources. Without that acceptance, the CLI may not have the resources it needs to build models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Configure the maps

Edit the generated map configuration so it points to the world you intend to render and defines the maps you want. Confirm every path and world name before starting a long render.

4. Render

Start rendering with:

java -jar BlueMap-cli.jar -r

Watch the process output for path, permission, or resource errors. The CLI does not inherit a running server’s world-management context, so its configuration must identify the world directly.

5. Start the built-in web server

After rendering, start the CLI web server with:

java -jar BlueMap-cli.jar -w

Use the web-server settings generated for the CLI deployment and open the resulting address in a browser. Treat rendering and web serving as separate operations: -r builds map data, while -w serves the generated site.

Keep a live map current

A server plugin or mod can render and update while the Minecraft world changes. The initial render creates the baseline; subsequent rendering is needed when terrain changes or new areas are explored, according to the map configuration and the operations you choose.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The CLI is better suited to separately managed rendering. You can stop the game server, copy or expose a world to the CLI process, render a controlled snapshot, and serve that output independently. This separation reduces coupling but adds another process and another configuration to maintain.

Do not delete the webroot or its maps/ directory casually: those locations contain the files the browser needs. Back up configuration before upgrades and recheck compatibility whenever you change Minecraft, the loader, Java, or BlueMap.

Troubleshoot a BlueMap installation

Symptom Checks and corrective action
BlueMap does not load after restart Verify that the jar is in the correct plugins or mods directory, that it matches the platform and Minecraft version, and that the Java runtime satisfies the release. Read the server console for the first BlueMap error or warning.
No configuration directory appears Confirm the process actually loaded BlueMap. Paper and Spigot use ./plugins/BlueMap/; Fabric, Forge, and Sponge use ./config/bluemap/. Check that you are viewing the server’s working directory.
/bluemap reload fails Inspect the edited file for invalid syntax, wrong paths, or unsupported options. Restore the last known-good configuration, restart, and then reapply one change at a time.
The render command reports no world Use the world folder’s exact name in /bluemap render <world>. Do not substitute a server display name or a client-side path.
The browser cannot connect Check that the web server is enabled, the configured port is free, the bind IP is reachable from your device, and the firewall permits that port. Use the documented URL form with the correct server address and port.
The page opens but the map is empty Confirm that a render completed and that map data exists under the configured webroot’s maps/ directory. A web server can be reachable even when no world has been rendered.
A standalone render stops early Check the CLI’s Java version, world path, permissions, and the accept-download setting. Read the CLI output rather than assuming the problem is a browser or firewall issue.

When setup remains incorrect, the official installation material directs operators to inspect server or process logs. Capture the messages immediately after startup, reload, and the render command; those timestamps usually distinguish compatibility, configuration, and networking problems.

Operational and security checklist

  • Use Java Edition and confirm the BlueMap release’s Java requirement.
  • Download the build for the exact loader and Minecraft version.
  • Install server plugins in plugins and Fabric, Forge, or Sponge mods in mods.
  • Verify the generated configuration path before editing files.
  • Render the actual world folder with /bluemap render <world>.
  • Set enabled, webroot, ip, and port deliberately in webserver.conf.
  • Remember that omitting ip binds to all network interfaces according to the configuration reference.
  • Allow only the required firewall exposure for the chosen port.
  • Back up configuration before upgrading Minecraft, the loader, Java, or BlueMap.
  • Read logs after every restart, reload, and initial render.

Which setup should you use?

Choose Paper or Spigot when your server already runs one of those APIs and you want the shortest installation path: copy the plugin, restart, edit ./plugins/BlueMap/, reload, and render. Choose Fabric or Forge when your server uses those loaders, adding Fabric API for Fabric. Choose Sponge when Sponge is your server platform. Choose the CLI when rendering should be independent of a running server or when you need a separately managed web endpoint.
