To run a 24/7 YouTube channel through AWS Elemental MediaLive, first arrange a source that continuously supplies video and audio, then create a MediaLive input and channel, configure an RTMP output with the ingest details YouTube provides, and test the stream before making it public. MediaLive is available in AWS Mumbai (ap-south-1) and Hyderabad (ap-south-2), but you must verify that every other AWS service your design needs is available in the selected Region. The right channel class and total cost depend on your redundancy design, output settings, supporting services, and expected audience delivery.

What you need before creating a MediaLive channel

A continuous upstream source

MediaLive needs a source to encode and send onward. It does not, by itself, turn an uploaded file into a continuous playout loop. Before setup, identify whether your source is a camera or program feed, a network stream, or another system; note its protocol, format, credentials, and whether it will push to AWS or MediaLive will pull from it. AWS says these source details determine the appropriate input configuration. See AWS’s input setup guide and its push and pull input documentation.

A YouTube live event and its ingest details

Create or prepare the YouTube live event and obtain its current ingest address and stream key. YouTube’s LiveStreams API describes an ingestion URL and stream name, and can provide primary and backup RTMPS addresses. The stream key is a credential: store it securely, do not publish it, and do not substitute sample values from documentation. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.

An AWS Region and permissions

AWS lists Asia Pacific (Mumbai), ap-south-1, and Asia Pacific (Hyderabad), ap-south-2, for MediaLive. Select the Region appropriate to your operation, then verify the availability of every supporting service in the planned workflow in that same Region. Check the AWS Service Quotas for your account as well; a service’s regional listing does not establish that your account has all required capacity. AWS maintains its MediaLive Region and quota information.

Choose a channel class for your failure tolerance

MediaLive’s channel class affects pipeline redundancy and the downstream destinations configured for each output. It is not a guarantee that every part of the end-to-end service—including the upstream source, network path, YouTube ingest, or companion AWS services—will fail over without interruption.

MediaLive class Pipelines Destinations per output Use it when
Standard Two Two Your design requires two pipelines and duplicate downstream destinations, and you have configured and tested the receiving side accordingly.
Single-pipeline One One One pipeline and one destination per output meet your availability and budget requirements.

A two-pipeline setup has a different resource and cost profile from a single-pipeline setup. Choose based on the failure tolerance you actually need, the source-side redundancy you have, the destinations you can configure, and your budget—not simply because the channel is intended to run continuously. AWS explains the channel-class behavior and the channel creation options.

Set up the input, channel, and YouTube output

  1. Document the source connection. Record the source protocol and format, its endpoint and credentials, and whether it pushes to MediaLive or MediaLive pulls from it. Confirm that it can remain available continuously and provide the media your channel is meant to carry.
  2. Select and validate the AWS Region. In the AWS Management Console, select Mumbai or Hyderabad if MediaLive is to run in India. Before building the workflow, check the Region availability for each supporting service you plan to use and review the account’s Service Quotas.
  3. Create the MediaLive input first. In the selected Region, create an input whose type matches the source and configure the corresponding upstream connection. Coordinate any required changes with the source system. Retain endpoint and connection details securely. AWS requires the input to exist before you create the channel.
  4. Create the channel. Choose the MediaLive role and input specification, attach the input you just created, and select Standard or Single-pipeline according to the redundancy decision above. AWS documents the channel setup flow in Complete channel and input details.
  5. Add an RTMP output group and output. Configure the output destination using the ingest address and stream name supplied for your YouTube event. MediaLive’s channel API represents destination settings with URL and stream-name fields; use the values for your event rather than a documentation example. The MediaLive Channels API describes those destination fields.
  6. Configure any second destination deliberately. If you select Standard, plan for the two downstream destinations per output and confirm the YouTube ingest arrangement you intend to use. YouTube may provide primary and backup RTMPS addresses, but having those addresses does not, on its own, configure failover in your AWS channel or prove that the complete path has been tested.
  7. Save the channel configuration and review it before starting. Check that the selected input, output group, destinations, encoding settings, and YouTube event correspond to one another. Keep the stream key out of screenshots, public notes, and logs that are not access-controlled.

Match the output to YouTube’s encoder guidance

Use an output profile supported by both MediaLive and the source, then verify it against YouTube’s current encoder recommendations. The following values are from YouTube Help’s encoder guidance checked on October 3, 2026; they are recommendations, not a promise of picture quality or a universal network-capacity target.

Setting YouTube guidance Practical application
Ingest protocol RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. Use the ingest address provided for your live event and configure the matching destination in MediaLive.
Video codec H.264 is listed as a supported video codec. Choose a MediaLive output encoding compatible with the source and YouTube’s ingest guidance.
Rate control CBR. Set constant bitrate and check that the chosen output profile supports it.
Frame rate Up to 60 fps. Match the source and intended output; a higher frame rate is not automatically better if the source or available capacity cannot support it.
Keyframe interval Two seconds recommended; no more than four seconds. Set the keyframe cadence accordingly in the output encoder configuration.
H.264 bitrate examples 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps; 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations for the stated resolutions and frame rates. Select a bitrate based on the output profile and verify the sustained capacity of the entire upstream path.

YouTube’s page includes guidance for additional settings and resolutions; consult Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions when selecting your actual output profile. These recommendations do not remove the need to test your source, MediaLive configuration, and network path together.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Send representative content. Test the kind of audio and moving video the channel will actually carry, rather than relying only on a static frame or a brief connection check.
  2. Check YouTube’s preview and health messages. Confirm that the intended live event receives the signal and review its stream-health status for ingest or encoding problems.
  3. Verify the viewer-facing event. Confirm the event appears as intended to a viewer, including its visibility and audio/video playback, before treating the setup as ready.
  4. Monitor after launch. Watch MediaLive channel and input/output state, as well as YouTube stream health. Define who will respond if the source stops, the channel output fails, or YouTube reports an ingest issue.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion and checking stream health and messages during the event. Its guidance is available at YouTube Help.

Plan the ongoing cost using your actual design

There is no single reliable monthly figure for “a 24/7 MediaLive channel in India” without an output profile, channel class, supporting-service design, operating schedule, and audience-delivery assumptions. Depending on the architecture, costs may include MediaLive inputs and outputs, packaging or origination, storage, distribution, logging, and other services you choose to use.

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS guide illustrates cost categories for a particular US East (N. Virginia) deployment and stated viewer/distribution scenario. That example is not an India quote or a price estimate for this channel. Use the AWS deployment planning guide to understand the scenario’s cost components, then calculate current prices for your own Region, services, output profile, hours, and expected delivery volume.

  • Decide whether Standard or Single-pipeline matches your availability needs.
  • List every AWS service and data path your design will use, and confirm regional availability and account quotas.
  • Estimate continuous operating hours and the actual encoding/output profile.
  • Model expected audience delivery separately from the cost of producing the stream.
  • Revisit the estimate if you change the Region, add redundancy, change output settings, or use additional services.

Or let it run in the cloud

Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. UPI and cards are supported in India; card checkout is available worldwide. Start your free first day with StreamNeo.
