Run FFmpeg as a systemd service so it starts when your Raspberry Pi boots. First make the FFmpeg command work interactively, then put it in a service unit (or a wrapper script if it needs shell features), enable the service, and test it after a reboot. The exact FFmpeg input, YouTube output settings, and stream key depend on your source and current YouTube Live setup; do not copy an unverified command or expose a real key.
Before you configure automatic startup
This setup launches a long-running FFmpeg process at boot; it does not determine how your camera, file, or other source should be captured or encoded. You must first confirm that FFmpeg can read your actual source and that your output configuration works with the current YouTube Live instructions. A service showing as active is not proof that a public live event is visible.
- Prepare the Pi: Install Raspberry Pi OS on suitable boot media and configure networking and SSH or Raspberry Pi Connect during imaging if you will administer it headlessly. Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite for headless setups and lists 8 GB as a recommended starting storage capacity for Lite; that is a recommendation, not a universal requirement. See Raspberry Pi’s getting-started documentation.
- Identify your source: Decide whether FFmpeg will read a file, network input, pipe, or capture device. The right command and device permissions depend on that choice.
- Protect credentials: A YouTube stream key is a secret. Do not put a real key in an example, public repository, or broadly readable unit file, and avoid scripts or logging that print it.
- Check local versions: FFmpeg’s online documentation is regenerated nightly. If your installed build is older or differs from the documentation, consult its local help and man pages. The project documents the general command form as
ffmpeg [global_options] { [input_file_options] -i input_url } ... [output_file_options] output_url; see the FFmpeg command-line documentation and documentation index.
Make the FFmpeg command work before adding systemd
Run your planned FFmpeg command in a terminal under the account that will run the service, using your real source and the current YouTube Live output instructions. Confirm the input opens, the process continues without immediate errors, and YouTube’s live control room reports the expected ingest. The title and operating system alone do not specify a safe, correct capture command, ingest address, key workflow, or encoder settings, so this guide deliberately does not supply a copy-and-paste YouTube command.
Find the installed FFmpeg executable rather than assuming its location; package paths can differ. Where practical, use absolute paths for the executable, input files, scripts, and working directory. If a command uses a camera or other device, verify that the intended service user can access it.

Choose direct execution or a wrapper script
| Approach | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Direct FFmpeg invocation in the unit | One FFmpeg process with no shell pipeline or setup logic | Executable path, arguments, environment, working directory, and device permissions |
| Wrapper script launched by systemd | A producer-to-FFmpeg pipeline or preparatory shell steps | Valid shebang, executable permission, quoting, exit behavior, and secret handling |
| Desktop-session autostart | The stream must run inside a graphical login session | Requires that session and user login; generally less suitable for unattended headless startup |
A systemd unit’s ExecStart is not a shell command line. Do not expect an unquoted pipeline, redirection, variable expansion, or && chain pasted there to work as shell syntax. If you need those features, put them in a standalone executable script with a valid shebang, then point ExecStart to that script. Make sure the script passes credentials safely and does not print them.
Create a systemd service
Save a unit under /etc/systemd/system/, adapting this outline to your actual command and installation. It is a service structure, not a verified turnkey YouTube command. Replace the placeholders; do not place an actual stream key in the unit unless you have chosen a suitably protected secret-handling method.

- Set the execution account. Replace
YOUR_PI_USERwith the intended unprivileged user where the source device permits it. Confirm that user can read required files and access the capture device; do not default to running the entire stream as root. - Set the working directory and executable. Use a real directory and the installed FFmpeg path. Check both rather than assuming
/home/YOUR_PI_USERand/usr/bin/ffmpegmatch your system. - Use a wrapper where shell behavior is needed. If you need a producer pipeline, use a script and set
ExecStartto its absolute path. Give it executable permission and confirm it exits with a meaningful status when FFmpeg fails. - Review network ordering.
network-online.targetis useful only when the active network manager has an enabled wait-online service. It does not prove DNS resolution, internet routing, or reachability of YouTube. Adapt and validate directives against the systemd version installed on your Pi. - Handle secrets deliberately. A root-owned environment file with restrictive permissions or another appropriate secret-handling approach is preferable to a key embedded in a public file. Ensure the chosen method does not leak the key through logs or process output.
For a pipeline or multiple shell commands, a wrapper also makes quoting and exit behavior explicit. A 2019 Raspberry Pi forum example includes a pipeline in ExecStart and should not be treated as a current unit template; see the historical “Livestream on startup” forum thread.
Reload, enable, and test the service
- After saving or changing the unit, reload systemd:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload. - Enable it for future boots and start it now:
sudo systemctl enable --now NAME.service. ReplaceNAME.servicewith the unit filename. - Inspect the service:
systemctl status NAME.service. Read the current boot’s logs withjournalctl -u NAME.service -b. - Confirm the stream in YouTube’s live control room; a running FFmpeg process alone does not establish that the event is ingesting or visible.
- Reboot the Pi and repeat both the service and control-room checks. Do not call automatic startup successful until it has survived an actual reboot under the intended network and source conditions.
Understand recovery and boot dependencies
Restart=on-failure asks systemd to restart FFmpeg when the process exits unsuccessfully; RestartSec=5 inserts a five-second delay in this example. Select a policy and delay for the stream’s intended behavior rather than assuming these values suit every workload. Repeated restarts are a symptom to investigate, not evidence that the stream is healthy.

Recovery can relaunch a process, but it cannot fix an incorrect key, unavailable camera, broken input, overloaded encoder, or absent internet connection. Network ordering also depends on the installed network manager, while capture hardware may become ready later than the service. Use local systemd documentation and verify behavior on the Pi rather than treating network.target or network-online.target as a guarantee of YouTube reachability.
Troubleshoot common startup failures
- The service exits immediately: Check
systemctl status NAME.serviceandjournalctl -u NAME.service -b. Confirm the executable and script paths, permissions, working directory, environment, and that the command succeeds outside systemd. - It starts but cannot reach YouTube: Test DNS and internet connectivity from the Pi, then check the current endpoint and key in the YouTube account’s live setup. Those details must be verified against current YouTube instructions.
- The camera works interactively but not as a service: Compare the service’s user and device permissions with those of the interactive account. Grant only the access needed instead of switching to root without a specific reason.
- It keeps restarting: Inspect FFmpeg’s error output, source availability, CPU capacity, network quality, and credential validity. A restart policy supervises the process; it does not validate the stream.
- The process runs but no live event is visible: Check the current YouTube live control-room state and ingest diagnostics. Process state is not viewer-facing stream health.
- Startup is delayed or fails during boot: Verify that the network manager provides and enables its wait-online service, and check capture-device readiness.
After=network.targetalone does not mean internet connectivity is ready.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream from uploaded video rather than a live camera capture, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded video, not a camera feed. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start with StreamNeo’s free first day.
