You can use VLC to play a playlist of video files, but the most clearly documented route to YouTube Live is to send that playback through a YouTube-compatible encoder such as OBS. YouTube receives the encoder’s feed at the event’s server URL using its stream key. VLC’s published playlist-broadcast example sends its output over local HTTP—not directly to YouTube—so don’t use that local URL as YouTube’s ingest address.
What you need
- A computer with VLC and the video files you want to play.
- A YouTube Live event and its server URL and stream key.
- An encoder that can take VLC playback as its source and send a feed to YouTube. YouTube identifies OBS as an encoder option in its help, but the cited YouTube instructions do not document a particular VLC-to-OBS capture setup.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for your selected stream bitrate.
The workflow below uses VLC for playlist playback and an encoder for YouTube delivery. VideoLAN documents sequential playlist broadcasting through VLM, while YouTube documents encoder ingestion. The exact way you route VLC playback into an encoder depends on the encoder and operating system; confirm that your chosen input method captures both picture and audio before the event.
Prepare and check the playlist
- Add the files in broadcast order. Open the videos in VLC as a playlist and arrange them in the order you want viewers to see. Play each file to check that it opens and that its picture and audio are usable.
- Decide whether the list should repeat. VLC’s VLM documentation describes sequential inputs and looping a broadcast input list after the final input. If you configure VLM, verify the list and loop behavior before relying on it for a live event. The documentation establishes sequential playback, not gapless transitions between files. See VideoLAN’s playlist example and VLM reference.
- Check levels and availability. Make sure files will remain accessible for the duration of the stream, and listen for unexpectedly quiet, loud, or missing audio. Test transitions between files rather than assuming they will be seamless.
Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create or schedule an encoder stream. Set the title, visibility, and other event details for the intended audience.
- In the event’s stream settings, copy the server URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains that the encoder sends its feed to the server URL and uses the key so YouTube can identify and accept it.
- Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or share it with someone who should not control the stream. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Route VLC playback through an encoder
- Open the prepared playlist in VLC and start playback when you are ready to test.
- In your YouTube-capable encoder, add VLC playback as the video source using an input method supported by that encoder and your system. Check that the source includes the audio you intend to broadcast. The cited official documentation supports the separate VLC playlist and YouTube encoder functions; it does not prescribe a specific OBS scene or capture configuration.
- In the encoder’s stream settings, choose YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingestion where available, then enter the event’s server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, in its encoder settings guide.
- Do not paste VLC’s local HTTP broadcast address into YouTube’s server field. VideoLAN’s example playlist broadcast describes a local HTTP output, which is different from YouTube’s ingest connection.
Choose settings and test the feed
Video, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second recommended keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select settings supported by your encoder and connection. Bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; for H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube’s table lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Those figures apply to that specific combination, not every stream.
Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to the full measured upload rate. YouTube advises choosing reliable settings for the available connection. The same encoder settings page lists AAC or MP3 for audio. Check YouTube’s current bitrate and resolution table for the combination you plan to use.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Preview before publishing
- Start the encoder and wait for the event preview in Live Control Room.
- Check that the expected VLC image appears, the playlist advances as intended, audio is present and at a usable level, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- For a scheduled stream, select Go live in Live Control Room only after the preview is ready and you have checked the feed.
- Check the public watch page or channel from a viewer’s perspective, then continue monitoring audio, picture, and stream health during the event.
YouTube recommends preparing encoder setups at least two hours before an event and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before it. See its live streaming tips.
End the event and understand the archive limit
When the broadcast is finished, use the event controls in Live Control Room and stop the encoder’s feed. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume a stream longer than that will be archived. The limit is described in YouTube’s encoder setup guide.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | What to check | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not receive a feed | Confirm that the encoder uses the event’s server URL and current stream key, and that the encoder is actually sending. | Correct the URL or key. If the key fails, YouTube advises getting a new key in Live Control Room and updating the encoder. |
| The preview is present, but picture or sound is poor | Check YouTube’s stream health, the selected bitrate, your available upload capacity, and audio/video stability. | Choose settings your connection can sustain and test again before publishing. YouTube’s encoder settings are dependent on codec, resolution, and frame rate. |
| A file is missing, out of order, or silent | Check the VLC playlist order, that each file is still available, and that its audio plays at an appropriate level. | Correct the list or file and rerun the playlist test before sending it live. |
| There is a gap or abrupt change between videos | Sequential playback does not guarantee seamless transitions. | Test the actual files and transitions in advance; do not promise viewers gapless switching unless your setup has been verified to deliver it. |
| The connection is unstable | Compare the stream bitrate with reliable upload capacity and look for fluctuations. | Reduce the bitrate or improve the connection, then verify stream health again. A wired Ethernet connection can be worth trying if Wi-Fi is unreliable; a cable is optional, not a requirement. |
