Test the preview and audio before going live. OBS documents playlist playback, but not automatic folder importing or ending a YouTube broadcast when the playlist finishes.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming setup guidance explains eligibility and activation.
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC on Windows, macOS, or Linux; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. The exact menu labels can vary by software version. OBS’s media-source guide documents the playlist controls.
- Confirm you have the rights to stream both the video and audio in every file. Having a local copy does not by itself grant livestream rights.
- Use a stable computer and internet connection capable of sustaining the stream for its full runtime. For prerecorded files with their own sound, the cited workflow does not require capture hardware, a webcam, or an external microphone.
Set up the video playlist in OBS
- Install VLC and open OBS. If VLC Video is missing as a source option, check that VLC is installed and that its 32-bit or 64-bit edition matches OBS.
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene where you want the videos to appear, add the VLC Video source and open its playlist controls.
- Add the files. Add each local video file to the playlist in the order you want it to play. The documented workflow is to add files to the playlist; it does not establish that OBS automatically imports every file in a folder.
- Choose playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist if playback should restart after the final item. Enable Shuffle Playlist if files should play in randomized order. Leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence. These controls determine playlist playback, not whether YouTube ends the broadcast when playback stops.
- Check the scene and audio. Confirm the video fits the OBS canvas as intended and that the source’s audio is audible in OBS. Play through a test segment, including any transitions between files, before the public broadcast.
Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio and select Go Live. Create a stream or schedule one, then choose the visibility setting that fits your audience: public, private, or unlisted.
- Copy the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. In OBS’s streaming settings, select a YouTube preset if one is available, or enter the server URL and stream key supplied by YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported; it encrypts the RTMP connection using TLS/SSL. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Keep the stream key secret. Treat it like a password. Do not show it in a screenshot, on stream, or anywhere viewers can access it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it through YouTube’s stream settings.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Wait for the incoming OBS picture to appear in Live Control Room. Check both sound and picture there, then click Go live for a scheduled event when the preview is ready. YouTube recommends testing the complete setup and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
Check bandwidth and stream health
YouTube recommends keeping upload bandwidth 20% above the total stream bitrate. This is a headroom recommendation, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming. Check the connection you will actually use for the broadcast, especially if other people or devices share it, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room during the test and the event. YouTube’s streaming tips provide the bandwidth guidance.
End the broadcast deliberately
When you are finished, stop the encoder and end the broadcast in Live Control Room as appropriate. Do not assume the broadcast will end when the final playlist item finishes: the OBS documentation describes loop and shuffle controls but does not document automatic YouTube stream termination at playlist end. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder setup page.
Troubleshooting
VLC Video is not available in OBS
Install VLC, then confirm its architecture matches OBS. The OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS and says VLC is needed on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Restarting OBS after installation may help it detect VLC.

The YouTube preview does not appear
Check that OBS is connected with the server URL and stream key currently shown in YouTube Live Control Room, and that the encoder is running. Confirm the channel is eligible for live streaming; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Keep the key private while checking it.
The video plays but there is no sound
Check the source’s audio in OBS and the preview in Live Control Room. Verify that the file itself has an audio track and that it is not muted in OBS or on the monitoring device. Test more than one playlist item if audio behavior differs by file.

The stream health is poor or playback stutters
Check the upload connection and reduce competing network use. YouTube recommends upload headroom of 20% above the total bitrate; treat that as guidance, not a promise that any connection will remain stable. Monitor stream health while testing.
The playlist ends but YouTube is still live
This is not evidence of a failed playlist: playlist completion does not document an automatic end to the YouTube broadcast. Stop the encoder and end the stream manually in Live Control Room.
