The best free option is OBS Studio on a computer you already own. It is a no-charge encoder listed by YouTube, and you can use it to send a prerecorded video to a YouTube Live stream. The tradeoff is that your computer, files, power and internet connection must remain available while you stream. If you do not want a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: it loops uploaded videos to YouTube, with the first day free and no card required.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel that is eligible for live streaming. YouTube lists channel verification, no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and a minimum age of 16 as requirements. If this is your first live stream, activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. YouTube live-streaming eligibility and encoder setup guide.
- A computer with OBS Studio installed. YouTube lists OBS among its no-charge encoder options; OBS Studio is free and open source for Windows, macOS and Linux. YouTube live-streaming encoder options and OBS Project.
- The video files you have the right to stream, and a stable internet connection. Since OBS encodes and sends the stream from your computer, the machine and connection need to stay available for the broadcast.
Set up a prerecorded YouTube Live stream with OBS
- Enable live streaming. Open YouTube Studio and follow its live-streaming activation prompts if you have not streamed before. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create or schedule a stream, choose the encoder workflow, and keep the page open for its preview and go-live controls.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details from Live Control Room. Treat the stream key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio.
- Add the video in OBS. In the Sources panel, choose + and add a Media Source. Select the video file and enable its loop option if you want that file to repeat. For a playlist, add the files as media sources and configure the order and repeat behavior in OBS; check the transitions before leaving it unattended. OBS is the encoder, but YouTube does not guarantee seamless transitions between local files.
- Start and verify the broadcast. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room, then use its go-live control if the stream was scheduled or created in a workflow that requires it. Confirm the public watch page is receiving the intended video and audio.
- Keep the system awake and monitor it. Prevent the computer from sleeping, keep OBS and the media files available, and avoid planned restarts. A power cut, lost connection, system sleep or OBS crash can interrupt a local stream; these are operational risks, not measured failure rates.
Important YouTube limits: archives, watch hours and monetization
A 24-hour broadcast may not produce a complete replay
YouTube states: “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived.” Because a continuous 24-hour broadcast is longer than that documented limit, do not assume YouTube will save a complete replay of one unbroken stream. If the archive matters, schedule shorter broadcasts and check the resulting video in YouTube Studio. YouTube encoder setup guide.
Live watch hours have eligibility conditions
Only eligible public long-form videos and archived livestreams count toward the relevant YouTube Partner Program watch-hour threshold. Unlisted, deleted or non-archived livestreams do not qualify. YPP eligibility also depends on regional availability, policy compliance and channel review; an individual channel’s access cannot be assumed. YouTube Partner Program overview and YouTube Official Blog, August 12, 2026.
Looping content does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s July 15, 2025 policy clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under its existing monetization rules, which also apply to live streams. Reused-content review is separate from copyright permission: having permission to use a video does not by itself guarantee YPP eligibility. YouTube channel monetization policies.

Check copyright and livestream rights before going live
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A detected match can cause a placeholder to replace the broadcast; if the content remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the stream. Even licensed material can be interrupted unless the rights holder has allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Before streaming, confirm that you have the necessary rights for the video, music and clips, including livestream use, and ask the rights holder about allowlisting where required. YouTube copyright guidance for live streams.
- Prefer material you created and control.
- For licensed videos or music, verify that the license covers public livestreaming on YouTube and any applicable territories or duration.
- Do not assume that crediting a creator or owning a downloaded copy grants streaming rights.

OBS on an existing computer
OBS has no software fee, so this is the strongest match for a free setup if you already have a suitable computer and connection. The costs are operational: the computer must stay on and connected, and you are responsible for configuring, monitoring and recovering the stream.

Troubleshooting common problems
| Problem | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Live streaming is unavailable in YouTube Studio | The channel may not meet the live-streaming prerequisites, may have a restriction, or first-time activation may still be pending. | Check verification and restrictions in YouTube Studio; allow up to 24 hours after enabling live streaming for initial activation. |
| OBS connects but YouTube shows no video | The wrong stream key or URL may be in use, or OBS may not be sending the intended source. | Compare OBS’s stream settings with the current Live Control Room details, confirm the Media Source is visible, and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. |
| The video stops repeating or changes unexpectedly | The media source’s loop setting or playlist order may not be configured as intended. | Review the Media Source loop option and test the source sequence in OBS before starting an unattended broadcast. |
| The broadcast disconnects | The computer may sleep, lose power or internet, or OBS may stop running. | Check power and sleep settings, reconnect OBS using the current stream key if needed, and verify the stream in Live Control Room. |
| The stream is interrupted after starting | YouTube may have detected third-party content, including material for which the channel is not allowlisted through Content ID. | Review YouTube’s notice, remove or replace the matched material, and confirm livestream rights and any required allowlisting with the rights holder. |
| A full replay is missing | The broadcast may have exceeded YouTube’s documented automatic-archive duration. | Check the archive in YouTube Studio; for future streams, schedule a duration under 12 hours if an automatic archive is important. |
