A reliable V Rising restart uses four parts: enable RCON, warn players with announcerestart, issue a controlled shutdown, and let a service supervisor or scheduler start the server again. Add autosave settings and a backup routine so a restart or game update does not put your world at risk. The procedure below covers the server settings, warning timeline, Windows automation example, Linux-equivalent approach, security controls, and recovery checks.

What an automatic, player-friendly restart does
A restart should be a planned maintenance cycle rather than an unexpected process kill. RCON provides the in-game control channel: it can display a localized countdown, send a custom announcement, schedule the shutdown, or cancel a pending shutdown. A separate supervisor then brings the dedicated-server process back after it exits. Autosaves and offline backups protect the world data while the process is stopped.

Stunlock Studios says that although the server software can often run for several days, administrators should restart periodically and recommends doing so daily. That statement appears in the V Rising Dedicated Server Instructions 1.1.x PS5; treat it as operational guidance, not a guarantee that every installation needs the same interval.
Requirements and design choices
Software and access
- A running V Rising dedicated server with access to its installation and save directories.
- Permission to edit
ServerHostSettings.json. - An RCON client such as
mcrcon, or another client that can connect to the configured RCON port. - A scheduler and a process supervisor. On Windows, Task Scheduler and a service wrapper such as NSSM can fill those roles. On Linux, use the distribution’s scheduler and a service manager capable of restarting a process after both planned stops and crashes.
- Firewall access limited to administrators for the RCON port.
Choose where the restart logic runs

If you need custom scripts, a known update sequence or unrestricted RCON administration, self-hosting provides the most control. If you do not want to maintain the operating system and backups, a managed service may reduce that workload, but its restart and warning features must be confirmed in writing.

Enable RCON safely
RCON is disabled until you configure it in ServerHostSettings.json. Add or edit the Rcon object with an enabled state, a non-empty password and a port. Keep the JSON syntax valid; a missing comma or duplicate property can prevent the server from starting.

Use the port selected for your installation, and allow it through the firewall only from trusted administration addresses. Do not publish the password in a community channel, commit it to a public repository, or leave it in a script readable by ordinary users.

- Stop the dedicated server before editing the settings file, unless your installation explicitly supports a safe live reload.
- Make a copy of
ServerHostSettings.json. - Set
Enabledtotrue, enter a long unique password, and choose an unused port. - Save the file and start the server.
- From an administrator machine, connect with your RCON client and run a harmless command such as a custom announcement to verify authentication and reachability.
- If the connection fails, check the server log, local firewall, host firewall, port-forwarding rules and whether another process already owns the port. Do not expose the port broadly while troubleshooting.
Set autosaves before automating a stop
Automatic restarts are safer when the server has current save data. Configure AutoSaveInterval in seconds and retain multiple files with AutoSaveCount. The AutoSaveSmartKeep option can retain saves according to age, reducing the chance that every retained file represents the same recent state.

- Choose an interval that fits your community’s activity and the amount of progress players can reasonably recreate.
- Keep more than one save file so a bad write or corrupted latest file is not your only recovery point.
- Copy the save directory to separate storage before game updates, configuration changes or other maintenance. Autosaves are not a substitute for an independent backup.
- After changing save settings, confirm that new files appear and that the server can load the latest save in a controlled test.
The settings are expressed in seconds and counts; the correct values depend on your server’s risk tolerance and storage capacity. The available documentation does not establish a universal interval or count that is safe for every world.
Build the warning and shutdown timeline
Use the built-in ten-minute warning
Send announcerestart 10 through RCON to tell connected players that a restart is scheduled in 10 minutes. This uses the server’s localized restart announcement rather than requiring you to compose a message for every language.
announcerestart 10The argument is a command value in minutes, not a promise that the process will be offline exactly ten minutes later. Use a longer or shorter value when your community needs more notice, and verify the resulting message in your own client before adopting the schedule.

Use a custom announcement when context matters
The announce command is appropriate when you need to include a reason, an exact maintenance window or instructions such as “log out at your base.” Send the warning before the countdown, and avoid claiming an exact return time unless your supervisor and update step have been measured on your installation.
Schedule or cancel the stop
Use the RCON shutdown command to perform the controlled stop after the warning. The documented command set also includes cancelshutdown, which lets an administrator abort a pending shutdown if a raid, event or maintenance issue makes the timing unsafe.

A controlled RCON shutdown gives the server an opportunity to finish its normal stop behavior. It also creates a predictable event for the supervisor to detect.

Windows example: RCON, warning, stop, update and start
The following sequence reflects a documented automation pattern using mcrcon, a 600-second timeout, NSSM to stop a service, a 60-second wait, and then an update/start phase. Replace every path, service name, RCON port and credential-handling method with values from your installation.

- Start the service or scheduled task again. The wrapper should point to the actual V Rising server executable and working directory.
Create a dependable scheduled task
- Create a dedicated Windows account or service identity with access only to the server files, save directory, RCON client and update tools it needs.
- Save the restart script outside the public web root and restrict its permissions. Keep the RCON secret in a protected mechanism supported by your environment instead of embedding it in a broadly readable file.
- In Task Scheduler, create a task that runs under the service identity, runs whether or not that user is logged on, and starts the warning script at the chosen maintenance time.
- Set the task to record its last-run result and standard output/error where administrators can review them.
- Configure the service wrapper to start the server after a planned stop and after an unexpected crash. A task that runs only once per day will not recover a crash that occurs between scheduled runs.
- Test the complete cycle with a non-production schedule: announcement, countdown, normal stop, optional update, service start, player connection and save loading.
Do not assume that a process supervisor will automatically restart after every kind of stop. Confirm its behavior for a normal RCON shutdown, an executable crash and a host reboot.

The same separation of responsibilities works on Linux or another supported operating system: a scheduler launches the warning and shutdown commands, while a service manager starts the dedicated server and restarts it after an exit. Use the service manager’s native restart policy, dependency ordering and log collection rather than writing a loop that blindly relaunches the process.
- Run the server under a dedicated account with ownership of its installation and save paths.
- Configure the
Rconobject and firewall in the same way as on Windows. - Create a scheduled job that invokes your RCON client, sends the warning, waits the selected number of seconds and issues the stop command.
- Configure the service manager to start the server at boot and recover it after crashes as well as planned exits.
- Place backups outside the live save directory and test restoration from a copied world.
- Review service and scheduler logs after the first unattended run.
Exact unit-file and scheduler syntax varies by distribution and supervisor, so copy the conventions of the service manager installed on your host. The essential behavior is more important than a particular command format: warning first, graceful stop second, supervised start third.
Keep routine restarts separate from world resets
Do not use reset settings to automate an ordinary server restart. ResetDaysInterval and DayOfReset control scheduled world resets, which are a different operation from stopping and starting the server. ResetDaysInterval defaults to 0, disabling that feature.
- Use RCON warnings and
shutdownfor maintenance restarts that preserve the existing world. - Leave
ResetDaysIntervaldisabled unless you deliberately want a recurring world reset. - Configure
DayOfResetonly as part of a documented reset plan, with a separate player announcement and backup.
Confusing these settings can turn a routine patch window into an unintended wipe, so review the JSON before every major configuration change.
Security and reliability controls
Protect RCON
- Use a unique, long password and rotate it if it appears in a shared script, log or chat message.
- Restrict the RCON port at the host firewall and any upstream router to known administration addresses.
- Do not bind or forward RCON to the public internet when a private network or VPN can provide administration access.
- Give the automation account only the file and service permissions it requires.
Make failures visible
- Log the return status of the RCON client, service stop, update command and service start.
- Alert when the process is not listening after the expected restart window.
- Check that player connections succeed and that the latest save loads, rather than treating a running process as proof of a healthy world.
- Keep a manual recovery path: console access, a known-good server build and a dated save backup.
Test before using a live schedule
Run the entire sequence with a non-production schedule and at least one test account. Confirm that players see the warning, the countdown does not interrupt an active event, the server exits cleanly, the supervisor starts it, and the world opens with expected progress. Repeat the test after changing the RCON port, password, service name, installation path or update command.
Troubleshooting common failures
Players see no warning
- Verify that the RCON client authenticated to the same server instance players are using.
- Check the port and firewall rules, then run a harmless
announcecommand manually. - Confirm the script did not exit early because the RCON password contains characters that the shell interpreted.
The server stops but does not return
- Inspect the supervisor’s service state and logs.
- Check that the executable path and working directory still exist after an update.
- Confirm the service identity can read the installation and save directories.
- Start the service manually once, then correct the scheduled task or restart policy before trying another unattended run.
The update step leaves an old or partial installation
- Keep the server stopped while files are replaced.
- Require the update command to return success before starting the service.
- Take a manual save backup first and retain the previous server files until the new build has passed a connection and save-load check.
A world appears to have rolled back
- Stop the server without repeatedly restarting it.
- Compare the timestamps and sizes of the retained autosave files.
- Restore a known-good copy of the save directory to a separate test location before replacing the live files.
- Review whether the process was force-killed before its normal save and shutdown work completed.
Operational checklist
- RCON is enabled with a non-empty secret and a restricted port.

Bottom line
Enable and lock down RCON, warn players with a tested countdown, stop the server through RCON, and let a real service supervisor restart it. Pair that sequence with multiple autosaves, an external backup and crash recovery. Treat world-reset settings as a separate feature, and test the complete cycle before making it part of a live community’s schedule.
